- ‘IS SPELLING DIFFICULT ONLY IN ENGLISH?’ and ‘IS PRONUNCIATION HARD ONLY IN ENGLISH?’: these are my questions to you today. English spelling and pronunciation are undeniably tricky and painful to learn but we never take the time to analyse how other languages work. English is BLATANLY hard in this respect, it’s just there in your face, but other languages have subtleties that are often ignored and overlooked. How high is the spelling-pronunciation conversion rate in your native language?

NIce video. I'm from the north of Italy and I pronounce the 's' in casa as the english /z/ (also Pi/z/a, co/z/a, /z/logarsi
Instead in a great part of Tuscany the 's' in casa is pronunced /s/ (casa, Pisa, cosa, slogarsi)
For example, in English I tend to pronounce "slogan" as /ˈzloʊgən/. For italian people this diffrence of sound is barely noticeble. Many don't even know it.
Regarding names is another story: I understand why english people have difficulties to even catch the sound /e/ at the end of my name (as they don't pronunce the /e/s at the end). But I don't understand why some of them can pronunce it as italian speakers do, I mean very easily. Mistery!
I'm with you on the pronunciation of CASA: I pronounce it with /z/, too, and using /s/ when I compared it to CASSA felt very weird 😜
And yes, pronouncing S as /z/ in initial consonant clusters is a very typical Italian trait which not many Italians are aware of.
You are right: there are some people who can get the final E right, but they mostly can't. I always go by SAM. If it ever happens that I need to be more formal about it, I say SAMUEL, even though my real name is SAMUELE. The funny problem with my full real name is that English people pronounce it as what sounds like SAM + WILLY (which is a cute word for PENIS), so I never even mention my real Italian name haha 😜🤣
