The Zip Line Across Time Zones

- In Sanlúcar de Guadiana, in Spain, there's a zip line called Límite Zero: the only cross-border zip wire in the world, landing in Alcoutim, Portugal. You land about an hour before you set off. It seemed like a good time to talk about programming.

We're from the future
If he waits around for an hour, will he see himself get back on the zipline in the future?
No, fortunately these time machines have a built-in time paradox avoiding mechanism.
You see, since the time travel can only occur between two separate regions in space, the two time lines cannot interfere with each others.
Here is a thought experiment to explain why:
Tom starts in Spain, enters the time machine and zips thought to the Portuguese time line. He arrives (roughly) one hour sooner than he left.
He waits for a bit less than an hour and enters the time machine in the opposite direction. He doesn't find another Tom just about to slide on the zip line though. In fact, in the Spanish time line Tom left one hour ago and just popped back!

I haven't done a computer-explanation video in a while! And this seemed like a good one to do. For bonus points, why does the time display like that, and how should I have fixed it?
Tom Scott
You probably set the start time as the current time at runtime. Then switched timezones and measured change in time in a different time zone, assuming this computer took the zip line with you.
I'd have thought that your code to display time differences only does hours and minutes in the past rather than the future and leaves seconds alone, so check both ways, I suppose.
I'm always amused to see "Posted 3 hours in the future" on the web.
Or... always use UTC to be on the safe side :p
Calendar API, if you're using Java, or your local flavour of time, date and interval counting system referring to a fixed referential (e.g. UTC).

Always use UTC internally and only convert to whatever timezone is desired at the display stage.

Surely internally should be using the Unix Epoch time?

No. the price per second is negative, but so is the time elapsed so the result is positive, and just like the real world, you are the one who pays them, not the other way around.

Bem-vindo a Portugal, Tom.

I find it interesting that when flying somewhere, time-zone changes are not a problem and even expected, but when driving it completely slipped me by.

It's actually very strange how the Spanish and Portuguese timezone works. Portugal isn't the entire length of Spain, so there is a section of Spain directly above Portugal that uses GMT+1, and then Portugal below it uses GMT+0. All of Spain falls in the GMT+0 time zone geographically. Strange.
Red Viper Most of Western Europe should really be using GMT, but for some reason we use a time most appropriate for the German-Polish border and which should not be used past the Western border of Germany. Portugal is nicely bisected by the theoretical 0-1 boundary but should really be entirely in -1 to keep in touch with Madeira but instead Madeira is in 0, while the Azores are in -1 when they should be in -2. Time zones are a mess.
+Quintinohthree Spain originally shared a timezone with the United Kingdom, however General Franco moved the clocks forward an hour (Although I've forgotten exactly why).
Great Scott!!!! He's built a Time Machine!!

I knew someone would pedant me on that. There are 26 countries participating in Schengen formally, but Vatican City, San Marino and Monaco also have open borders with one of those countries. So once you've entered the Schengen area - Britain isn't - you can get to 29!
