- Over the course of two autumns, we managed to plant 80,000 perennial bulbs in our lawn in what is known in the Netherlands as a "stinzenplanten." This allows us to have a more productive lawn for pollinators and other wildlife, pay homage to Sander's Dutch roots, and also provide a tapestry of beauty over the course of 3 months-often during a time when not much else is blooming.

Now I know why there are random bulbs planted all over the lawn. We bought our house from a Dutch family many, many years ago. 🌷💚🙃

Bulbs are great, they just keep coming back, though they are usually quite short in growth/blooming time. Some exceptions are the onion family of bulbs

We had crocus scattered through our back lawn from a previous gardener-owner. They were lovely and a delight every year! He also had planted thousands of daffodils and narcissus of many varieties along with camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, dogwoods, two japanese maples (there was a third one in the adjacent neighbor’s yard, 😂) and a magnificent Korean Spice viburnum that flooded the garden with the most beautiful, heavy perfume and beautiful pink-to-white balls of color for two full weeks every spring for at least 60-75 years. It was an amazing garden to grow up in. Oh, and I forgot to mention the Christmas and Lenten Rose hellebores in all the borders…

Crocuses multiply quickly. It’s going to look even more beautiful in a few years.
I received 200 crocuses one year by mistake, and they did not want them back so we took a drillbit and drilled holes in the lawn and planted them. It was magic. As soon as the snow has melted we now the lawn then wait for the crocus to emerge
Did they die down early enough before you had to mow the lawn?
so much better than the sanitized look of the "perfect green" lawn this is better in every way for nature and just to look at in general reminds me of the lowlands of Scotland when i was a kid very cool

At first, I thought 80,000 bulbs was overkill, until I watched your time lapse. How stuning and beautiful to bring this method (I forget the name you called it)to your land. I love it!
They really get gobbled up in ~1/4 acre of lawn. I think if they were also blooming simultaneously, it would feel "fuller" but the fact that they have staggered blooms over the course of three months makes it feel sparser haha. And it's "stinzenplanten"... the term you're looking for :)
I'm Dutch and have been investigating bulbs for our lawn. The adviced number of bulbs I see here is somewhere around 40 bulbs per m2, which is 30-35 per square yard!
@@FlockFingerLakes Stinzenplanten are defined as plants that escaped gardens a long time ago and now are considered part of nature. So it's not necessarily the bulbs in your lawn, but we still use plants labeled stinzenplanten in our lawns. They often are the older less cultivated version of modern bulbs.
Oh yeah. You really need a lot, if you want them to 'pop' visually. Lucky are those, that 'inherit' them with their garden.

We have in the Netherlands all kinds of bulbs for different seasons so you can have flowers from early spring til autumn . Just leave in the ground they will come up next year and the next.....

We have blossoming trees, shrubs, and annuals, but what do our bees love most? A tiny boxwood hedge!!! It is emitting the loudest hum this week. There are species of bees mixed in that I’ve never seen before, and the cutest bumble bees with a salmon pink stripe! (Puget Sound area.)
The camera angles give it an illusion of depth and density. Plus the dandelions are filling in a lot of the empty spaces. All those bulbs were easily swallowed up by the vast landscape. Looking forward to seeing the progress in another 3yrs.

A magnificent project bringing food to butterflies and the entire animal chain. Less water and zero maintenance unlike stupid sod expanses that feed nothing and back breaking to maintain. Very commendable, thank you from the animals.
The first to bloom in frosty springs is the crocus sativa - the 3 stamens inside are saffron threads. Use them in cooking and to sell for more bulbs. Make this your cash crop so you can do more plantings with the money. Fresh or dried, put a few into a tiny bit of hot milk and mash it to bring out the color, then use in soups and rice, etc.
If you want a fall blooming crocus bulb, you could plant saffron crocus. They're beautiful foliage in the spring and bloom in the fall. You collect the saffron spice after they bloom for food. It's a very expensive seasoning because to harvest the saffron, pickers go out with tweezers and pull just the saffron out of the flowers. This is why asparagus is so expensive because a machine can't harvest it effectively either.
On the areas you’re having problems with the grass but have already planted your bulbs, you could put down cardboard with a little compost on top to weigh it down. This should kill the grass before your bulb season starts, but leave the bulbs unaffected since their energy to pop up is stored below the surface anyways.

Great that you have gone with native bulbs
Yes, it was nice to be able to plant the native bluebells, trillium, and anemone as well, though in smaller numbers because nurseries just don't produce those plants for en masse plantings. And the native lawn and flower mix trial in the one section came in really nicely too where we initially took up the sod. At first we called the low-mow native lawn mix - the "slow mo" native lawn (czcams.com/video/poktAYLl7UY/video.html), but it FINALLY did emerge after a few seasons. Something for folks to consider when looking to make their pre-existing lawn areas more productive.

I have purchased 20 acres three years ago and it has been abused for many years. No soil life or diversity. You have been my teacher along the way. Any ideas on how to combat Canadian thistle? It is beyond me doing by hand. I try to do everything natural but this weed has won the war. I had put down thick layers of cardboard and thick mulch and to my surprise in every flower bed this weed has taken over 😞 At my other home I use boiling water in a tea pot to combat them on a small scale but you have to be careful about scaring nearby plants. ugh! I need help. Thank you.

After only one year the meadows look so alive and colorful. I can only imagine how beautiful and humming with constant buzzing of bees in another year or two. My little assortment of tulipa kaufmanniana always brings me such joy each spring; and they are multiplying so very well. After seeing your checkered fritilleria, I decided I need to have those too! Thank you for sharing and inspiring.
You've inspired us to do a similar thing in our (much smaller!) deer fenced garden/lawn/fruit tree area this fall. I love having enough to cut for bouquets in the spring too (obviously leaving enough for pollinators).

We have these wonderful native flowers call SPRING BUEATY. MOST lawn people think they are a weed. I think they are free flowers and one of the first flowers for the pollinators. I won't let hubby mow yard till most of them are finished as well.

This helps the bees thrive. This was a smart idea because we have a problem keeping bees from the chemicals and other insects. This helps everyone. People don't realize when the bees are gone our food is gone. We all need to plant flowers if we have a garden. They pollinate the flowers then the small flowers from the garden.
Muscari, or grape hyacinth, freely grows from self-seeding. I started with about 6 bulbs and after 5 years I have an area about 12 feet long and 4 feet wide of little purple flowers. I know they spread by seed because they weren't in a clump -- they literally popped up the next year at the other end of the space.

Haven't cut the lawn in 12 years. My geese take care of that. Get some funky stuff growing but most has some kind of flower. 80k bulbs would cost more than my house so good for you!
