  • this is definitely my favorite ending from any romantic comedy. WHMS is a genuinely intelligent (for a change) film on the tenuous relationships of men & women.

It's a rare thing when a rom-com appeals to both men and women equally, but this one pulls it off flawlessly.

A perfect ending to an intelligent Rom-Com. Adults genuinely in love are wonderfully childish in a very nice way, as this film amply illustrates.

As the new year unfolds, I'm nestled in my blanket, observing this tender moment. The absence of profound love has been a constant in my life for years. Still, as I watch Harry and Sally, I can't help but crave the possibility that someday, in a future new year, I might experience a love as deep and genuine as theirs

    Exactly 'chatterbox1229' well said.
Also, the other fact I like about the movie is the coincidence that they keep bumping into each other over time - it's fate and then they finally become inseparable as friends. After being friends for only so long they realise that they are meant for each other only because they know each other so well and more importantly love each without even knowing it.

Yup, you're quite right then, the characters are similar too
Sally cf. Annie (optimistic )/ Alvy cf. Sally (depressive)
I just read that Reiner was initially gonna end the story with their sex ruining the relationship up. The final "happily ever after" ending was the script writer's idea.
That changed the whole premise of the film and the purpose of the techniques used.

i know it's typical of a newly enlightened college student, but I watched this for a course in romantic myths in film. By going the same places that Annie Hall went as far as story (and even cinematic devices like talking directly to the camera, split screen, etc), WHMS was actually a sort of remake of Annie Hall. It sought to re-establish the old formula for a good romantic comedy.
Rather than defy tradition like Woody Allen did, WHMS reestablishes it.

@Vinco I understand that. What I don't understand is that at the end of the movie they say they knew each other for 12 years and 3 months before getting married. If they were 22 when they graduated, she would have been 34 not 32. It's a little detail that wouldn't have slipped past a Billy Wilder or a Preston Sturges. Nora Efron and Rob Reiner are usually pretty savy so I just wonder about that detail in terms of scripting.

Nope it's Frank Sinatra. Yes Harry Connick Jr did the soundtrack but if you listen to the movie they have different artists like Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald in the background. I've even watched it with the director's commentary and they said they chose Sinatra instead of HCJ because it seemed like for Harry's character when he realizes he's in love he would hear Ol' Blue Eyes.

It's possible. I haven't seen the whole film since I wrote that comment. I do expect to pay attention to that aspect next time. What may be an assumption on my part is that she moves to New York upon graduation. I now remember Harry is going to call his girl friend, Sally's roommate. So maybe it is summer vacation for him but she's leaving U of Chicago to pursue a career without having the degree.

I do love this movie and the ending. But I always notice that when Sally says she's almost 40 the night that Harry comes over to comfort her, it turns out she's 32. Now if it took them 12 years and 3 months to get married than they would both have been 20 when they graduated from U of Chicago. That never spoils the movie for me but someone should have done the math.

Yeah, the stories are very different, but the feel of the movies is very similar. I think it's the script that I find very similar- lots of intelligent witty dialogue, and that's the thing that carries both films. Obviously they're both heavily set in New York, and both have a certain 'Jewish' perspective (Allen, Reiner, and Crystal are all from Jewish families). Plus the cinematography is similar: lots of static shots where the characters are small and move across the scene etc.
