NO Pro ANGLER will be This HONEST About the LOWRANCE Ghost Trolling Motor

  • As you know I put a Lowrance Ghost trolling motor on my bass boat a few weeks ago and one thing that frustrates me is no pro angler will be honest in reviewing positives and negatives of a product. In this video we review the Lowrance Ghost - taking a look at the spot lock feature, sonar and graph integration, some of the creature boat comforts it offers, as well as some of the quirks that stand out. Overall, I love the trolling motor but there are a few things that need a little TLC or aftermarket tweaks to take full advantage of. I'm no pro angler but I hope this honest review will help you get a better idea of what the Ghost has to offer.
    Check out my boy @nathanmartinfishing and Sea Clear Power bit.ly/2yJ236F they did the install the the electronics tweaking on my boat.

    Programming your buttons : NEMA network has to be installed, hooked to TM, and powered on. IE usually powered on through your switch at your console (START). Once there, go to settings and go to autopilot and you will see a menu to configure trolling motor keys.

    • @DaveDangles
      @DaveDangles Před 4 lety

      Christopher Cooke that’s a definite negative then. NEMA is expensive and sloppy, especially when Ethernet shares what people need; sonar, maps, and waypoints.

    Great evaluation Mickey. Just put a Ghost on my bass boat and absolutely love it. Lowrance spent years designing and testing their new entry and it shows. Amazing engineering and attention to detail. Built like a tank. I couldn't be happier. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Still waiting for the 3 in 1 transducer to be shipped for this unit. I Watched a comparison review video on all three top units, ghost, ultrex and Garmin. The biggest difference between the ghost an Garmin apples to apples was price. The are comparable in standard pricing but you have to add on options to the ghost to get some of the features that are standard on the Garmin unit. One major one being side imaging on the ghost. It’s an extra, you have to buy a different nose come. The other is a remote I believe, Garmin comes with one, Lowrance you have to buy it... I went with the ghost and added on only because I use Lowrance graphs.

    I'm no engineer by any means. That being said, I'm sure you're right about reducing thrust. I believe it's for more stealth. Less water displacement at lower settings, and when running shallower, it *should* provide more oscillation. It could possibly mimick bait fish schools, but that's reaching! LoL love your videos! Gonna watch the wish challenge next, as I've been very curious myself!!

  • @brianstone6548
    @brianstone6548 Před 3 lety

    The trolling motor is great had mine over a yr now that all the calibrations are done. I do not have any issues with it. One issue i did have is do not use standard flooded cell batteries. Use a min of a AGM battery with the trolling motor. The buttons must have the NEMA 2000 network hooked up, or the new ethernet system installed. Also the auto pilot (navigation) only works with the nema installed. You can plot routes and as long as no one gets in your route you can sit back and it drives itself around the route. The prop is weedless from the factory. I have run thru weeds with no issues. I troll for crappie and bass in the winter, and crappie in the spring. The course lock and auto pilot selections are awesome. At 24 VDC the thrust is 96 LBs at 36 VDC its 135 LBs thrust. On my tracker 175 on max thrust i can cruise thru the water with full live wells and gas tank. With all the equipment on the boat and reach a speed of 4.3 MPH at max thrust on 24VDC. The set up with lowrance elite 7 Ti2 graphs is awesome. With the new elite FS and HDS live systems its even better. Saw one at the lake a few days ago. I will probably upgrade to the elite 9 FS system just for the active target ing that can be added to it, and the engine integration for the engine read outs. I have been using my set up for a yr now. and I love it. Especially since i used the AGM batteries. On the batteries, after much research. I found that the best bang for the buck are the ones you can get at oreillys auto parts. They make a fleet AGM marine battery that has an actual amp/hr rating on it. Its 92 amp/hr at a 20 amp an hr draw. The ghost at full thrust on 24 vdc pulls 16 amps. My fastest troll it 1.4 mph so i am only drawing 6.4 amps. I can troll none stop for 12 hrs, and the battery meter still reads high. This is where the brushless dc motor is so efficient. The motor is actually a brushless dc servo motor. These motor as anyone that has worked industrial maintenance knows. Are the most efficient torqueing motors available. This makes the Ghost Trolling motor the top of the line in my view. I love mine. The spot is awesome to, it auto adjust the thrust to hold the position in most any windy conditions. My boat has been out in 25 mph winds and the spot lock does hold the position , now my boat loaded down is only 1778 lbs i know the heavy fiberglass boats will do even better in the windy conditions. I do not know if this adds to the pros and cons. the only flaw i have found with the ghost are its kind of bulky on the front of the boat, and you have to have the min of the AGM batteries for it to have full potential. a side from the calibrations must be done for you to get the best performance as well. With that said. i love mine and will not trade it out. very low maintenance trolling motors, and very powerful and quiet.

    I just got a new Ranger with the Lowrance Ghost electric motor. On my fourth trip out, the blue power button wasn't working. I reset all the relays and kept trying it but it just wouldn't power on. What was interesting was if I held the button down the lights would blink on and off, so I know the unit was getting power. I tried everything and finally called a mechanic I know and he said to check the wires to see if they're loose. Everything seemed tight, no give anywhere, but I jiggled them anyway. Then suddenly it worked. I pressed the blue button and the power came on. Just curious if you've had any problem with turning it on.

    Be careful putting a bigger or steeper prop on it. You can burn the brushless motor or speed control up by over propping it. Brushless motors are wound at a specific speed . Overpropping it can cause the motor to work too hard to keep that speed and too many amps to go through your speed controller.

  • @pj3p488

    Drop a crankbait out the back when you are going 3.4mph. I know a Kipawa on a Minn Kota adds about 10% speed so 3.4 to 3.8 or so. Doesn't sound like much but it is very noticeable.

    What can I do with the troller tie down strap while I am fishing on the bow with troller deployed? My strap flops around and hits my Graph screen.

    Wish Lowrance would release a Ghost that does not have the link to unit feature to price point it a little cheaper. Not everyone wants, or has the mean, to drop 3k on a trolling motor and then also another 2-5k on units. The feature is useless for those of us who are still running older units, Gen 2, Gen 3. Could save us a little dough. Part of the reason I went with another Ultrex.

    I’d like to hear what the noise volume is underwater. Cause it doesn’t matter what we hear but it does matter what the fish are hearing.

    I saw a review and in it, though the Lowrance was quiet on top it was noisy underwater. However this was when they first came out. Did Lowrance do anything to change that or is there an aftermarket item that you can buy if that is still the case. Hopefully it's not and Lowrance took care of it as I like the concept of their system. Would sure be nice not to have my wires twisted up in my trolling motor like on the Terrova.

      Greyhunter all noise is from the propp under water, without the prop u can only hear the axel moving on full power.

      it feels weird and honestly you might not like it at first however you'll get used to it fast and the change is well worth it for spot lock. i was a little werid about that at first too.

    I was going to pull the trigger on the Ghost but their remote is basically a key fob (way being the competition). Also want an integrated system with my electronics. I’ve been a lowrance guy for years, but their LiveSight is again way behind the Garmin Panoptics. If I had to build a boat system now it would be Garmin. Interesting to see what happens at iCast this year

      Pretty good - but it comes back to the prop, needs a more Minn Kota like prop to be perfect in the grass.

    Did you have any issues with the anchor lock not keeping you in one spot? I've had some issues with it wanting to turn the boat around I even have a video of it on spot lock doin figure 8's.... i got it mostly worked out but it still turns the boat around sometimes when I hit the anchor button!?!?!
