one of the biggest problems we as players have created for ourselves is calling it "skill based matchmaking" when in reality its engagement optimized. they dont care about the experience of players as long as it keeps them on the game. if the community keeps calling it skill based and if anyone believes what they said in the statement they have won. the comm needs to keep pushing activision to release the truth, with real data, and real transparency. their post was entirely made solely as a way to say "hey look we told you what we do now keep buying bundles pls." the fact that they can straight up lie is honestly baffling especially when theres so much evidence against them. hopefully things change in the future but right now it doesnt look too bright.
Exactly, many people in other games have already understood this for years, but for the cod community, no offense, a lot seem to be VERY slow. People will dismiss the difference because the mm is screwed up anyway and they think it's all interchangeable. The thing is when you call it SBMM you're already putting yourself in uphill battle in the argument because it frames the argument about fairness. Your against SBMM? You must be against fairness then! It's total nonsense, but the community consistently walks into it. Even youtubers need to do a better job at this. From what little I've played of modern COD, this system sure as hell does not promote fairness. If the system is about fairness, why does my team always have slightly more people going like 2/12 with like TWO CONFIRMS, so that I'm the one that has to carry? Why was I always at the top or second in the scoreboard every game I played, win or lose? The fairness angle makes no sense. The games are not made to be "fair". It also extends the ranked mode. People are surprised that there are different tiers within the same ranks, so that my silver lobbies are different from your silver and so on. The thing is games have been doing this for years now. It's the same thing in games like league of legends and many competitive games that use mmr. Though I will say this seems to be an issue with the game hiding your mmr behind the coockie-cutter visual ranked system. This is why I think a visible mmr number is always the fairest and most informative to the player, but I think they give players these stupid visual ranks so they're more easily manipulated and misled on what their real skill level is. If poeple saw the real number of where they actually were, they probably fear that timmy would quit the game because he can see how bad he actually is. Every competitive game should give an mmr number, I dont care about these stupid visual ranks.
Sbmm is a complete plague on any game its in. Not only does it negate the point of having a ranked system, it takes the fun out of the game for everyone. Who in their right mind wants skill to be a factor in matchmaking?

its fine being a bad player but theres a huge gap when you consider nowadays where players dont even use controllers they end up using mouse, at that point if your using a controller and your opponents are using mouse to aim you know its no longer a skill issue but a exploit, mouse have infinite deadzones so if you tune it right you can pretty much get headshots at medium and long distance with almost any gun and that means people in your lobbies can just flick their hand and they get a headshot on you with a sniper or pistol in a heartbeat and the problem with that is if you know they were using a controller they would never make that fast accurate flick from long distance with a short range weapon it would not be possible with analog and you know it would change their performance drastically if they were handed a controller in mid match, its different from being bad in 2010 vs being bad now where you know people are just cheesing mouse and cronus.
The team selection is the problem; you put one guy on a team of scrubs against a e-sports team and expect the experience to be different. Put some bad players with good people, stop disbanding the lobby after every game and maybe you’ll cater to more players as the games would still be competitive while both sides could win.
"We want to create Safespaces for our players in a video game" if you was to say that shit in the prime golden era cod days you would have gotten absolutely roasted
if they split the game into sbmm and non sbmm we all know which side would be more populated. I feel like it serves an additional purpose to get people to buy and migrate to the next years cod out of frustration as by the end of its life cycle even the casuals are frustrated by the sbmm. People were still playing Bo2 even after ghosts and AW, people were even playing bo3 before it became unplayable due to ratting, but nowadays the majority of players will consistently move to the next game because the previous one was made artificially unenjoyable.
So Ive been playing cod since BO3 so i cant speak too much on older cods but recently I switched from controller to key board and mouse. Historically I was pretty decent on controller, after the switch I became considerably worse and its definitely effected how I view skill based matchmaking. The variance in my games is massive, sometimes I get in hard lobbies sometimes I feel like Im playing literal bots. Skill based matchmaking feels a lot better as a worse player.
I refuse to believe sbmm was a thing before advanced warfare. Or if it was it was the loosest definition of that, at most it was lobby balancing. But if you were a really good player back then you could just mop lobbies day in and out with high KD. I call bullshit on their statements regarding that part of SBMM's history. Advanced warfare was the first game where you REALLY felt it became really hard to play as you got into the 2kd+ brackets. That was also the year I think the term "reverse boosting" became a thing and I saw people selling accounts that were modded to have 0.001 k/d basically permanently so you got into the easy lobbies all the time (lot of youtubers back then bought these accounts I think, atleast the ones dropping daily nukes). But yeah thats just my observation, a lot of people online say its been a thing since mw2019 onwards but AW was the 1st cod where you really would see a night and day difference between high kd and low kd accounts lobby experiences.
Honestly its pretty easy to explain, why would someone who is brand new to the series want to join in their first game just to see a chopper gunner in the sky spawn killing the whole team. That's why we have spawn protection from streaks and why in older titles streaks just sucked outright. The skill gap a veteran player has over a new one is very high, that is all they were out to fix.
That’s literally how the game used to be and it would still be the top selling game every year. It’s not like every lobby you hopped into had teams dropping chopper gunners/nukes left and right lol
When they said they want a “variety of outcomes” for all players, they clarified that statement later to mean “equal wins and losses” for all players. They want everyone’s W/L ratio at 1.00. That’s why you get absolute dog water teammates so often. The game drags you down on purpose to give the opposing 6 players an almost unstoppable free win to keep them playing.
Bro i miss your old videos man remember the one where you were reviewing the “what would you do “ video with the teacher and kid and the angry karen 😂😂 😂 good times
"Better players need to lose more and worse players need to win more!" That's really all they said. Their logic is so disconnected from the real world it's actually scary. Imagine a rookie fighter in the ufc complaining they lost to a title owner because they were better than them lmao
Haven’t bought a cod since the first modern warfare because of sbmm in casual. If I wanna sweat I’ll play ranked. Theyre never going to change but I’ll still tune in here and there to see if we get a miracle.
I used to be a high skill player back in cod4/5 and honestly they've been protecting bad players since mw2 blatantly with death streaks and subtly since cod BO1 which is when I stopped playing for like forever until cod MW2019 when I noticed there was more bad player protection and terribly blatant bad player protection in MW2 2022 and its not even close. (me missing shots (apparently) but when they hit it takes 9 shots to kill a person but that guy picks up my gun and kills me in 2 shots), I also noticed that after spending like $100 in the store it went away for a couple games and then comes back. I played on my boy's account thats probably spend thousands of dollars between all the cods and all of a sudden I'm god again. Never spending a penny on this game again.
I stopped playing when mw2019 released because of sbmm. I swear there was no sbmm system at all before that cod. They say there was sbmm prior to that but it was a rarity I’d ever load in and struggle as matchmaking allowed for me play against the wider playerbase not just the top 1%
I swear to god when I hop in a match it feels like I got all the people who ain’t never played cod before in their life. But the other team has like a squad who runs scrims on the daily 😂 it’s crazy I ain’t played in a month because of it I’m good on that.
I don't think we should call this Skill Based Matchmaking (SBMM). This is MMMM, Monetization Maximizing Matchmaking. It is more than balancing games to minimize the skill difference in a lobby. It is using deception and tricks to psychologically manipulate players to spend more money and time (because more time is more chance to spend money). Some tricks are intentionally unbalancing games to break long streaks (both win and lose, but mostly lose streaks), matching players with stronger players that use expensive gun skins of the player's favorite gun that the player may be more motivated to buy, making the first several games for a player really easy so they aren't likely to quit right away, disguising loser bots as real players to trick players into thinking they are good, shrinking the hit boxes of players that the algorithm predicts might quit so they don't die as much, dynamically changing shot spread, and more.
This. Too many forget those bad players are where creators get alot of there clips from and where slightly better players have those break out games. You lose that group of players, and lobbies get alot more sweaty for everyone
I highly doubt they had it back in 2007 that was a total different time. They make it so vague that it could just be balancing the lobby that’s always in the game and I could bet that’s what they are referencing
I’ll tell you the same thing I told the others that said this dumb stuff. SBMM definitely existed back in CoD4, you just sucked so you didn’t notice. I was too 25 in the world, my lobbies were always full of the top couple hundred players, and I could not play with my friends because they would get absolutely destroyed if they queued with me. The difference now is that they will add latency and rebuff damage in addition to matching by skill.
Yeah you’re right and they’re telling the truth, it was implemented since forever ago, but it was apparent or noticeable since AW, and extremely noticeable since mw2019. Unfortunate that they won’t revert back to what it was before.
why is maintaining engagement from lower skilled players a bad thing when the main point against SBMM is people who want higher variance lobbies? Chase them out and you'll, in a literal sense, only have sweats to deal with. Take it from someone who's highly into fighting games, people *will* leave if >50% of their games is them just being steamrolled.
That's because the new generation of gamers are whiny little kids that all their life were used to get their participation trophies. You can see it best on FIFA you play against some random dude outside of ranked play, you score 2 quick goals where he had no chance to defend and he'll just leave if he feels like he's gonna lose. Back in the day 8-10 years ago people would rarely leave the games like that, they would get steamrolled all game and just try to score a goal against you. Same in older CoDs, bo2 I was trash I was just happy to get a couple of kills on the top player from the other team.
I been saying this for ages, the reason CoD has been the best selling fps for over a decade is because it tricks bad players into thinking they're good at the game. These players go to other games and get crushed, then jump back on CoD cuz the fast ttk and sbmm allow them to get free kills that they wouldn't get in games with a skill gap.
Lol I’ve felt this way about CoD since it came out. CoD was the game where I would feel like a God with a 3+ KD…etc Halo/CS were the games where I’d sweat on and had to actually try. CoD also had no ranked at this time so that maybe a reason as well which Halo did and imo always took more skill.
There’s definitely some weird EOMM shit going on. Some games my bullets register perfectly and others the connection will seem fine but my bullets don’t register and although I’ll get the first shot on someone they still kill me.
I see a lot of people complaining about playing against sweats. Honestly, I want to play sweats. Just throw some sweats on MY team too instead of absolute garbo scrubs. Also, this was my first COD purchase since Infinite Warfare. This will also be my last COD purchase ever. Activision and their greed can go to hell.

This is how """"COSMETIC ONLY"""" MTX ends up massively affecting gameplay anyway.
We all knew this already
Nah some people try to deny it lol
What a useful comment.
4 cod videos in a row birdie is like that one guy who cant let go of a broken relationship
Why did they not speak about ranked ? Leave the bad player in pubs, and make rank fair again… I don’t think bad players want to play ranked anyways
one of the biggest problems we as players have created for ourselves is calling it "skill based matchmaking" when in reality its engagement optimized. they dont care about the experience of players as long as it keeps them on the game. if the community keeps calling it skill based and if anyone believes what they said in the statement they have won. the comm needs to keep pushing activision to release the truth, with real data, and real transparency. their post was entirely made solely as a way to say "hey look we told you what we do now keep buying bundles pls." the fact that they can straight up lie is honestly baffling especially when theres so much evidence against them. hopefully things change in the future but right now it doesnt look too bright.
They say let’s have an on going conversation while also saying they will never change their ways
"Experiencing wins and losses more proportianitely" is true insanity.
Best gpa- disproportionate college oppurtunities
Best Athlete- disproportionate scholarships
Best looks-disproportionate dating oppurtunites
Best gamer- get fuqd
Equality of oppurtunity is just, equality of outcome is evil
I played CoD religiously from 2007 to 2019. 12 straight years. Gave it up in 2019 for Apex.
I still follow the scene though- I can’t believe how unhappy the community has become. Things must really be rough.
I think more people would benefit from leaving if they are truly unhappy.
The “community” was never happy.
Eh, I guess that’s true. But you know what I mean. Things (overall happiness and popularity) are not now what they were between 2007-2015
Yeah I played cod so much. Then I got into r6 around 2016 and got so hooked it effectively killed cod for me, then I moved onto Apex and been playing since 2020. Thought nothing would kill cod for me until it happened
Kicking my cod addiction will be a story I will tell my kids.
Imagine being a hardcore mode player dropping 50+ kills camo grinding and the switching to core to “just play the game”
Not to mention. They said there are no bots in multi-player. When Control game mode clearly has bots 😂. At this point anyone buying their games deserves it
So legit question here. Could a game dev be sued for unfair and deceptive practices for this?
The worst thing about it is that it renders every win/loss kinda meaningless…I didn’t win because i did well….I just got a good lobby. I didn’t get creamed because I’m trash….i just got a try hard lobby.
1:40 this is such cap from them. You could queue up a game and within literal seconds be thrown into a random pub lobby. They are definitely not prioritizing connection 😂
How many times does ATVI have to teach you this lesson old man?
I used to like COD but never ever played multiplayer because of several reasons. Namely because I was trash at pvp, I didn't like COD's multiplayer and I knew that it was gonna be annoying to play
My first COD was Modern Warfare 3 on a friend's dad's PS3. I was probably around 10 years old
Essentially, they talked out of their butts and nothing is going to change or get better
I got greeted by -150 sr when i logged in to ranked today and i NEVER back out.
Off topic, I constantly think about the guy who wanted bot lobbies for an old cod
I’m not gonna lie competitively combat training back in black ops 2… 3 bots 3 players vs 3 bots 3 players.. that shit was soo fun. I would never want bots in true 6v6 or regular pubs I have however always wanted to play bots in private match on OG Mw2 maps. Shit would have hit different as a kid running out of xbox live.
@@Evil_ChangeI agree dude, I used to only play that, while my older cousin played pubs, I was having fun
Maybe when they were talking about cod 4; they were talking about cod 4 remastered: cause there's no way they are talking about og cod 4.
Where you could bolster helictopters on top of helicopters to achieve insane kd's.
bullshit that they use connectivity and time to match as the top priority. these devs been lyin to us for years an they still doin it. i remember it takin 6 seconds to load into a game on og mw2 it takes minutes now. lemme catch my son buyin cod points
I was dropping nukes very two games in some cods, now a 2 K/D is insane lmao
All I heard was Robert bowling saying “fuck you last stand” with this whole post
its fine being a bad player but theres a huge gap when you consider nowadays where players dont even use controllers they end up using mouse, at that point if your using a controller and your opponents are using mouse to aim you know its no longer a skill issue but a exploit, mouse have infinite deadzones so if you tune it right you can pretty much get headshots at medium and long distance with almost any gun and that means people in your lobbies can just flick their hand and they get a headshot on you with a sniper or pistol in a heartbeat and the problem with that is if you know they were using a controller they would never make that fast accurate flick from long distance with a short range weapon it would not be possible with analog and you know it would change their performance drastically if they were handed a controller in mid match, its different from being bad in 2010 vs being bad now where you know people are just cheesing mouse and cronus.
MW2 ,mw3 the Og ones never had this skill base matchmaking back then , I use to drop MOABs and actually have fun 😂
SBMM started in Advanced Warfare about a quarter way through the year
Nah it started in MW2019
I have some crazy screenshots showing some crazy ranked match ups on EU servers as an NA player but theres nowhere to dm you
They didn't address the part about how gaming with your buddies is impossible because some of them suck and don't want you in their lobby
Biffle can boot any player from the lobby by reporting them
The only way to solve this problem is for the players to stop buying their trash games.
if they split the game into sbmm and non sbmm we all know which side would be more populated.
Lower your sensitivity.
BO4 was the last game without SBMM
Honestly its pretty easy to explain, why would someone who is brand new to the series want to join in their first game just to see a chopper gunner in the sky spawn killing the whole team. That's why we have spawn protection from streaks and why in older titles streaks just sucked outright. The skill gap a veteran player has over a new one is very high, that is all they were out to fix.
That’s literally how the game used to be and it would still be the top selling game every year. It’s not like every lobby you hopped into had teams dropping chopper gunners/nukes left and right lol
In the OG mw2 you could search a game and be put in a lobby in a second
When they said they want a “variety of outcomes” for all players, they clarified that statement later to mean “equal wins and losses” for all players. They want everyone’s W/L ratio at 1.00. That’s why you get absolute dog water teammates so often. The game drags you down on purpose to give the opposing 6 players an almost unstoppable free win to keep them playing.
I wanna know how TF me being rank 287 in MW2 gets put on the same team as rank 1 and 2 players ending the match with like 5 kills 20+ deaths
Bro i miss your old videos man remember the one where you were reviewing the “what would you do “ video with the teacher and kid and the angry karen 😂😂 😂 good times
Absolutely on point
Variety of outcomes == a closer to 1 W/L ratio; it’s not describing the composition of the lobby
"Better players need to lose more and worse players need to win more!" That's really all they said.
Their logic is so disconnected from the real world it's actually scary. Imagine a rookie fighter in the ufc complaining they lost to a title owner because they were better than them lmao
@@retrocd8976there's a reason rookie fighters never challenge the champion fighter and actually have to earn the right to do that.
I honestly don’t think I’m ever getting another cod. The storage alone is ridiculous. I got other shit I wanna play.
Haven’t bought a cod since the first modern warfare because of sbmm in casual. If I wanna sweat I’ll play ranked. Theyre never going to change but I’ll still tune in here and there to see if we get a miracle.
Location 34 %, time to connect 34%, skill 32%. This scenario technically they can still say location and time to connect is the priority not skill
It’s not going anywhere until we stop playing the game. I haven’t played in weeks and happy to do so
from a money aspect i understand sbmm now, good players are gonna keep playing after a bad game while bad players quit
Right after New Year’s I touched the game only TWICE. planing on not playing At all for SEASON 2 😂
I never grew out of these games. The SBMM completely keeps me from enjoying them
I stopped playing when mw2019 released because of sbmm. I swear there was no sbmm system at all before that cod. They say there was sbmm prior to that but it was a rarity I’d ever load in and struggle as matchmaking allowed for me play against the wider playerbase not just the top 1%
I experience it a few times on MW2 but it’s horrendously noticeable on MW3 & I refuse to play it anymore
Think about it. All they have to do is cut the switch off and make it off ping. Game changing.
Tell me why if I buy a bundle my next two or three games are full of bots and two year olds without thumbs?
Hows this game play so chill? Mine is like 4 wars going on in each corner 😂
The whole "Time to match" is a lie, today, I had 3 ranked games in a row get cancelled cause teams where not even.
If microtransaction or purchases factor into match making that is grounds for the gaming commission to step in. Thats like slot machine territory.
couldn't agree more!
7:12 facts😂
I swear to god when I hop in a match it feels like I got all the people who ain’t never played cod before in their life. But the other team has like a squad who runs scrims on the daily 😂 it’s crazy I ain’t played in a month because of it I’m good on that.
Just have 2 options: sbmm and no sbmm
I’m off to ticktock and I need to educate some people
I don't think we should call this Skill Based Matchmaking (SBMM).
This is a good thing. People love playing against bad players, so we have to do things to incentivize them to keep playing despite sucking.
This. Too many forget those bad players are where creators get alot of there clips from and where slightly better players have those break out games. You lose that group of players, and lobbies get alot more sweaty for everyone
@@ahastar1141The lobbies were just fine from COD 3 to Black Ops 4, what exactly changed?
bird man and Jev i wanna see that
happen
Imagine someone making an alt profile just to piss off the system by internationally getting 0.0000% accuracy
Stopped playing cod a couple months into MW2… I don’t regret it
why is maintaining engagement from lower skilled players a bad thing when the main point against SBMM is people who want higher variance lobbies?
@@Lucas-zb2wgthey got no heart.
What gun setup is that??
I makes sense on paper but that's not how it's implemented
Thank God XDefiant is coming out soon. We do not have to deal with sbmm
Mark Rubin, who is working on XDefiant, wrote one of the patents that contribute to SBMM/EOMM. You're gonna be dealing with this whether you like it or not LMFAO
@@purgatoryplexusexactly lol the guys making these games aren't dumbasses (when it comes to making money anyway). People are more likely to buy bundles if they enjoy the game and most people enjoy the game when they do good. Put the bots in bot lobbies and profit (unfortunately).

Bad players wont stop playing if they dont constantly win
How come there were more active players back in the day than today?
Mw 3 has such a small playerbase
Its clear that sbmm doesnt work
@@KeinProblem-uv5jh damn I really have to explain this? Lol
1. Read the blog. Almost their exact words were "bad players are more likely to back out if they're getting slammed. Good players play the game out. If people have fun on the game, theyre more likely to buy bundles." Not my assumption. Their data.
2. More active players back in the day because the games were good and actual effort went into the gameplay, not just the store.
3. SBMM doesn't work for you or me. Because we aren't the majority of the playerbase: shitters. Average KD in this game is under 0.9. 1.0 KD you're better than at least 50% of the playerbase, probably more towards 70%. Do the math on what the majority of peoples KD is vs how much money is to be made catering to certain skill groups. If you still don't get it I give up. 😂
They're never getting my money lmao
Consoles killed multiplayer games with centralized servers and matchmaking...
I miss so much the old days of playing COD4 on my clan server and having lots of fun having control of what was going on in the game, making friendships and nemesis, organizing matches etc.
Matchmaking kills all of this.
“A smaller player pool” (less people buying bundles)
Barely watched vid but connection and time to match 😭 nah fam
COD could also retain players by making a fun game. Just a thought 🤷🏽♂️
I mean it just doesn't happen. When I was bad i still enjoyed the game. When I saw a great player it was legit cool af and wanted to add and play with that person genuinly inspired me to become better.
Well of course. It's habit by now. For example, if they don't update security features on old games, then it'll push you to their latest game.
People need to boycott bundles and in game purchases, if players did this for even a day it would force them to listen
