Today we're exploring the language of one of the most ancient empires - Persian language. Even though it is old it is still thriving today. It is the national language of three countries: Iran, Afghanistan (where it is called Dari) and Tajikistan (where it is called Tajik). A little spoiler - Persian is different from Arabic!

Truly the most beautiful language I’ve ever heard. Probably the greatest poetic tradition of any language in the world too, so much so that it’s unsurprising that Rumi is the best selling poet in the West even with how much style and beauty is lost in translation.
Also the fact that even Indonesian also have Persian loanwords (pasar, bazar, anggur, pahlawan,…) shows how far Persian have gone around 😃
also (gundum=wheat), (Badam=almund), (Tamasha= fan), Deewan =faculty

"Never, never call persian arabic" 😂😂 this video was really good.
@Bryan Bradley like an iranian in europe when being attacked by a nazi-racist: No I am not arab, don't beat me. i am white. i speak Pershiaaaaan :D
@Bryan Bradley ah i am not sure if a Nazi will at first give their victims a form to fill and see if they are jews, arabs or Turks, or real Iranians as they look all the same. and if they are Iranians they can be Turks and Arabs as well. so the term is a bit tricky!
There are arabs in Iran as well as turks and kurds. Iran is diverse and that makes it amazing.
@Bryan Bradley Neo-Nazis aren't very bright, they don't know anything, they are hostile to anything that does not look Germanic. Besides Caucasian is a very general term, Nazis considered Gthe Aryan Race as being superior to others, not sure if they considered Persians as part of their ''master race''

I would like to bring a small correction regarding the word you used to greet your audience:
“Salam” is an Arabic loan word…
The Farsi equivalent would be Bedrood or Dorood.
Wikipedia:
Dorood which originates from Middle Persian Drod, which also originates from the Avestan language, the word Dravat (Meaning: Health), is a polite and official form of hello in the Persian language, (also recognised as 'Parsi' or 'Farsi'), whilst Bedrood '(Pedrood)' is an equivanlent to see you next time or goodbye.
Durud! Afarin Masoud-jan! Man hamin ra khastam beguyiam mehraban. Zendeh bad Iran. Bedrud!
Dorood ! "
Just a little precision:
"Bedrood" has not the same meaning as "dorood". It means farewell, while "dorood" is equivalent to hello or greetings.
@@helenepopulos2438 Correct!
In Russian “health” is “zdorovye” which probably shares common roots with “drod” or “dorood”.
Very true, i noticed that mistake also.

Many thanks indeed. A very informative review as usual, Julia. I recently started analysing the so-called Turkic languages of Central Asia and came to a conclusion that this region had either been under a strong Persian influence in the past or used to trade with Indo-Persian world, which can be traced in numerous word borrowings. For example, words used for many vegetables, cereals, days of the week, round-shaped baking oven (tandur) are very similar to those found in modern and old Persian. It is amazing. Zaboni Tochiki (the Tajik language) is probably the closest one to Farsi in the large family of Indo-Persian languages

There are also Persian place names that end in "-stan" (for country, as in Afghanistan), and "-abad" (for city, as in Hyderabad).
That’s correct but the Sanskrit word for place is Sthan similar stan. So relation between Sanskrit & Persian is unmistaken.
James you are wrong here, all countries ending Stan is actually Sanskrit words sthan means place or land.
As regards " -stan " it is cognate with " stance " , and " -abad " is cognate with " abode " in English.
Not really since it was the Persians that infkuenced Central Asians not Sanskrir. No doubt Sanskrit and Avestani had similarities, the names for the Central Asian states as well as Pakistan and Afghanistam are certainly from Persian rather then Sanskrit.
@@dogeofgreatness2222 ُIt is more due to their common " proto-indoeuropean " origin rather than having been influenced by a local ancient language such as Sanskrit , e.g. in modern Persian the word "shar" meaning city is cognate with English "shire " in virtue of their common proto indoeuropean and not as If either of them had been influenced by each other .

Bro, she meant it the linguistic way, not the racistic way. :)
In my country many people see Persian as a very close language to Arabic
@@abbeyrhapsody3205 It's not something to blame. We are neighbors with Arabs, we have too many Arabic words (as mentioned in the video 40 percent Arabic loan words or even more), and we use Arabic alphabets for writing. But if you read through any Linguistics book or even Wikipedia pages, you would see that Persian has the same roots as European languages like English or Italian (they are all Indo-European languages). And our basic vocab and grammar are more similar to European languages than to Arabic.
Mother (en) - Mater (Latin) - Maadar [ˈməT͟Hər] (fa) - Omm ['um]
(ar)
But Arabic along with Hebrew and Aramaic and some others are Semitic languages. Wikipedia pages about languages are a good place to start reading about them. :)

Very informative video and also amazed by your research. Btw I'm from West Bengal,India and here (whole India) Farsi was official until the mid 19th century, before English replaced it . It has left a huge impact on Bengali, Urdu, Hindi etc . Man ham zaban e farsi dars mikonom wa kheyli khushal shodam choon shenidam ke tu farsi yad megiri. Zinda bashid❤️

Lol another foolish fanboy. it was only a court language of the Mughal used within their territory (which was never most of India). Also It was never a language spoken by the masses, everyone had their own language.
@@pranavkrishnan3239 I think you have to change your name like......the university of stupidity.
It's really pretty
This specific video has been lingering in my CZcams feed for literal years at this point!
For some reason I just never decided to watch it, actively passing over it as though I felt triggered by the thought of my own language...
Recently though, I've been getting more into learning about my country's history and generally the language and how it evolved... And that's how I ended up here; literally after searching up "Persian as a second language"
Persian is my first language though, I was just wondering if I would be able to see a non Persian person talk in Persian in a way that I wouldn't notice...
But I just ended up watching this amazing video!
Thank you for taking the time to make this and raise awareness, not to mention the effort you went into actually learning it too!
I'm not sure how much this would be of help but you can certainly hit me up if you want to see some uneducated feelings and opinions about this language, and generally certain stuff that the people who have not lived in this culture may not know much about... I would love to help out!
Hopefully for a free Iran, currently undergoing revolutionary protests.
به راستی که زبان پارسی شیرین است!
یادم رفت اینو بگم، من اسمم پارساـست! عملا بهترین اسم برای این کار 😂

Persian is important mainly because Iranians are one of the amazing people on the planet not only old culture but hospitable. I know few words in Persian and many friends there. Thanks for the video and the enthusiasm shown in showcasing the culture and language.
Hospitable? That's not what its neighbors say.
@@williamjordan5554 I dont know from which country you are from , most countries are not great with its neighbours . I am talking about hospitality and if you dont know the word meaning refer it .

Tashakur! Great video about a language & culture I'd love to learn more of.
Dear Jullie thanks for your video about my mother toungue😍
Just to clarify some thing, persian and arabic are from 2 diffrent family group ,persian comes from Indo-european language group and arabic is from semitic language group , but of course since persians and arabs are neighbours they have influenced each other during history and there are arabic loanwords in persian as well as there are persian loan words in arabic
But the country of Iran itself is the homeland of many diverse ethnicities that each has their own native language , besides persian, kurdish, luri, gilaki, talesh, bakhtiari ,laki ,balouchi, tati ,armenian and georgian are also from Indo-european family group and has similarities to persian
Azeri Turkish and turkemen languages are also widely spoken in Iran but they are from turkic kanguage group
Also arabic is the mother toungoe of some southern natives in Iran which is from semitic group, hebrew and assaryan are also used by Iranian jews and assaryan Iranians although its not widely spoken
To sum up Iranian languages are exteremly diverse and beutifull and need more recognition
The Persian language is a very poetic and beautiful language.
As a fellow Persian learner, I've got to say that this video was a very good summary. Well done Julie!

I am a persian from Afghanistan and alot of pople thinks that we are not persians but actullay we are because we have the same culture the same people but our dialacte is dari and thanks for the information 😍😍🇦🇫🇮🇷
Hi bro from 🇮🇷
Hi bro from iran
The real Aryans are us (the people of Afghanistan) This language was born in Afghanistan. Modern Afghanistan is the homeland of this language. The people in Fars province of Iran were smarter and they saved everything in the name of Iran or Irani. The Afghans were fighting each other and didn’t care much about their past. That is why we need to tell everyone about our history and culture.
I'm persian and I felt so happy finding this video on my recommendations.
Your information were so good and you covered a lot of things that we, Iranian people wish others knew about our language, *specially* the fact that we are not Arab.
You are awesome!💛
I was so touched about the fact that she mentioned NEVER say persian is Arabic. because aside from the political and historical reasons our language is always mistaken due to the scrip.
Great intro. Mersi.
More people need to watch this channel, very interesting, and they will learn something
I've been fascinated by this amazing language and culture for a long time. .i Tried to learn it.. .. But God.!! ..not easy as I thought it would be 😂...thanks for showing this beauty to the world

@@Agnet_Faze They speak Persian but we learn Arabic in our school so I guess we learn both

The Persian language is highly regarded overall and considered beautiful as well.
