      Ohhhh Man Martha, the online recipe doesn't match this video.
      You should update your website, so there's optional ingredients listed. That way when your audience clicks the recipe's link we can find what we watched, instead of being disappointed... just saying.
      I was really delighted seeing this recipe, as my mom made something like this all the time when I was growing up, but she lost her cookbook. We've been trying to track down similar recipes for years, & yours looks promising... Thanks for posting!

    Being Irish and making soda bread all my life I never use baking powder, only bicarbonate of soda. That's the traditional way of doing it here but of course there are tweaks here and there.

    Nobody in Ireland puts caraway seeds in their soda bread; the flavour is too pungent 😱 There is however, a classic caraway seed cake that's traditionally popular in the Irish countryside, which is also popular in Wales and England. It's essentially a Madeira cake (what Americans call a 'Pound Cake', I think) with caraway seeds. ☀️☘️

    Probably tastes quite nice but this bears little relation to traditional soda bread. No caraway seed, no raisins, no baking powder. Use wholemeal flour or half and half. Use buttermilk. Just change the name of the bread

    This looks like a recipe I grew up eating & have been trying to find... it may not be traditional, but it's nostalgic for me. My mom lost her cookbook, & I've been trying to find replacement recipes~ I sure hope this tastes like Ihope. The caraway seeds & raisins are spot on, so that's a Win in my opinion!
    Haters can hate, but for many of us, this is gonna be spot on!

    Hello Martha, I shall indeed try your interesting recipe!
    FYI! -- We never put baking powder or caraway seeds in traditional Irish Soda Bread, by doing so, it is no longer classified as Irish Soda Bread. It is something else...LOL
    Lady, you are using way, way too much salt; I would also cut back on the amount of butter; I would use half of the amount of both butter and salt you use...!
    We never, ever use caraway seeds in Irish Soda Bread.
    We employ our thoroughly washed hands [no spoons whisks and such are required in making Irish Soda Bread].
    Yes, we place a cross on the top of the cake in order to facilitate an even gas escape during the rising process.
    *We ALWAYS knead the dough in order to introduce air into the mix prior to placing the product centre shelf for one-hour in a round flour dusted tin at 400 degrees.
    We never call it a loaf, we call it a cake of Irish Soda Bread because it is round in shape.
    During the cooling process; we generally cover our baked bread with a tea towel in order to help it to retain moisture...! -- I hope this is helpful!

  • @sunshineandsunflowers_3699

    Martha really came for me without even knowing it. I had to go out and purchase fresh baking soda and baking powder this morning. Because I made a batch of cookies and they did not spread like they usually do. And I didn't realize that my baking soda and bacon powder had expired.

    • @BMarie774

      Once every two or three months, my mom used to take out baking soda and vinegar and pour it down the drains in the house. This will keep your drains free of buildup and prevent fruit flies, and keeps them clear of clogs. In fact if your drains don’t drain fast enough, this will often drastically fix the issue. And this way, you never end up having baking soda sit around for too long. She mostly did it as a routine just to make sure she never let baking soda sit around for too too long.

    I make this bread on a regular basis and I would never consider using two and a half spoons of salt. I wouldn't use that much salt in a month. Very often I omit the salt. Whether it is Kosher, Sea or Himalayan it is still salt and at the rate you use it it is suicidal. Also why not just use buttermilk?

    • @BMarie774
      @BMarie774 Před 2 lety +3

      You saying 2.5 teaspoons is too much clearly shows A. You’ve no idea what a teaspoon is or B. You’ve no idea what you’re doing. She said 2.5 TEASPOONS, not spoons. There’s a massive massive difference between teaspoons and tablespoons, mate. 2.5 teaspoons is a very typical amount for these sorts of breads/crackers. That’s a perfectly reasonable amount and isn’t even mostly for taste, but for the process of making this sort of bread.

    • @tomveale5258
      @tomveale5258 Před 2 lety +3

      @@BMarie774 I find your reply most condescending, to think that I at 73 years of age don't know the difference between a teaspoon and a tablespoon. A tablespoon is three times that of a teaspoon. So in that case I would not for one moment confuse the two or believe the lady to be talking tablespoons. Now if we return to the subject on which I commented. One teaspoon of salt equates to 5.69grams, therefore 2.5 teaspoons amounts to 14.225 grams salt. This amount of salt in this dish or any of equivalent size is dangerous, if you cannot see that I am wasting my time speaking to you. As I said previously I make this bread very successfully and have done for years, I rarely use salt relying on my expertise and blending prowess to manipulate the flavour of the ingredients. Salt is an unnecessary addition in many dishes but has become a shortcut for TV and celebrity cooks/chefs. Incidentally, I would never dream of using milk and vinegar, I prefer and recommend buttermilk, traditionally used in this cake. Did you know, the recommended daily intake per adult of salt is 2.3 grams and while I realise the cake is sharing to put 14.225 grams of salt in this recipe is irresponsible and dangerous.
      Yours
