Midwesterners do love to give PJ’s at Christmas. Some of us even get matching sets for the entire family and maybe the dog.
Target and Children’s Place are known for those pjs in Chicago. Love it!
“Except the french; perpetually naked” 😂
Considering the cold weather and popularity of plaid/tartan designs, never understood why flannel shirts aren't ubiquitous in the UK. I wore flannel shirts in London and someone asked me if I was from Canada. I guess they thought I was a lumberjack or something.
That looks like a plaid pattern but flannel is actually a soft cotton and it’s much warmer.
A brushed cotton, to raise the nap.
There is also wool flannel, although it's more expensive, and flannel made from synthetic fibers.
In most of the US a "baseball" hat is everyday apparel, and usually has nothing to do with sports. The large bill is good from rain if worn under a hooded jacket.
And the bill is a good sunshade if you don't have sunglasses.
It's like a contemporary cowboy hat. Functional and so American.
Heck, those caps are often even worn indoors!
The ball cap shares its status with the beanie, especially among teenagers and those in movements such as skater culture.
@@chexhcatialo3889 unless it's a church, office or a private home, you dont need to take your hat off. That includes bars and restaurants and almost all other public buildings and places.

Fleece-lined jeans. They're great for Midwest winters.
Yea, the West Coast gets too moist for me in winter for flannel-lined jeans. I miss them, tho😄
work great in an auto repair shop aswell. gotta love New England winters
@@ericeaton371 I hate it. Haha. I'm a CA girl. But I'm stuck here.
Where are you? Just got a new (to me) Jeep. I'm used to my 04. There's no way this one will be a fix it myself vehicle. Too complicated. Good to have a trusty mechanic on file.
F mid west.. you dont own them...
Hard to find for men let alone my size when I see them. I discovered coated heavy fleece leggings. Look good and can be dressed up or down. Warmer than jeans. Men's clothes are warmer and women's are getting thinner and more cheaply made. Hard to find a good cable knit sweater.even. Some are cropped which defeats the purpose or holey or ripped or thinner. Resulting in more layering in winter. Went to many stores to get a new winter coat. Most were for style not warmth. 200 at an Army surplus store for a good one with real pockets!
As a Rural living American, I find my wardrobe slowly turning in to anything sold by Duluth Trading. Excellent comfort and durability and as I am now in my 50s, I could honestly care less about current younger fashion trends. I especially like the flannel lined firehose flex pants in the winter time 👍
Duluth is great.
flex firehose are the most comfortable pants ive ever worn. and the material lasts longer, they are warm for Michigan winters, best pants out there
Super expensive
I can't justify paying thier prices for stuff.
@@alfextreme69 it is steep, just got a pair of carpenters for $68. those will last me about 2 years tho, i think thats worth it
When I went to the UK years ago, plaid flannel shirts were sold in stores there. I was surprised to learn that they were called "Canadian shirts". But then, the people there had never heard of "English muffins".
You can always wear your pajamas to Walmart, you'd fit right in.
I've done that!
@@LostinthePond then you're officially with the People of Walmart group, lol! I see a lot of those folks!
@@LostinthePond for all that is holy and good... no. Don't ever do that again. Put on those Old Navy jeans and at least be decent.

I want to thank you for being so fair and kind in your videos. A lot of Brits are hateful when it comes to America(ns). But you’ve actually managed to show respect. Thank you. 🙂 I appreciate your channel. I like learning the differences between UK and US.
Gun holster?
As an American I wear Dickies, Carhartt, Cabela's, & L.L. Bean
I didn't mention these in my comments because these are all premium brands. A lot of people can't afford them, even though they are the best by far. I worked outside in land surveying in all kinds of weather and fields conditions and these top brands do the job for sure. Worth every penny when you have to be outside year round in a true four season environment.
Maverick Fox You forgot Duluth Trading!
Now everyone wants the old LLBean stuff. Cotton was better.
Oh, aren’t you sophisticated!
I'm British so I wear clothes
"We're going to Paris in the summer" oh, the innocence of February.
Paris? The one in France? There's one in Texas....but, why bother going to Paris, France? Travel in the USA. There's a Paris there....it's....New Orleans. A Paris in Madrid....fun, good food, lots of wine....much cheaper....friendlier.
Get yourself some flannel lined jeans for next winter. Your welcome Lawrence
@M Detlef yeah the your, you're thing is really hard for a lot of people for sone reason... but what do you mean it's not Lawrence? What is it then? Different spelling?
Long Johns are absolutely a must when the temp dips below zero. Surprised it did not make your list.
Been asking my wife for over 20yrs to get me red full body long johns with the flap in the back!!! 😂😂😂
I've lived without long jons below zero
@@johnnygreenface4195 are you a polar bear?
@@Cherokee51774 yes
@Jason Mistretta that is for sure! I grew up bicoastal, but I definitely am more CA. Southern CA. Below 15 I'm wearing the fleece lined p pants and smart wool long und and toastie toes stuck everywhere. I'd rather be really warm (but not sweaty) than have a tiny chill. No tolerance for that. Cold sucks the energy out me.
Also key that every outside layer is at least 5000 mm waterproof and every base layer is moisture wicking.
It's just so much effort.
H&M is the IKEA of clothing. It looks great, it's very affordable, but damn is it cheaply made! Old Navy is a low-end Gap brand shop.
It doesn't look great.
"That's not a promise, that's a threat"
You really are one of us.
I live in Michigan, so I will be wearing my heavy socks into April.... maybe May.... possibly June.
I own very few pairs of shorts there. But there are ticks in the back of the yard and got Lyme but caught in time. I do tick checks all the time. I own plenty of lightweight pants and longsleeves if I need to go by the woods where my berries are planted. Summers seem to be getting cooler. Don't see pools like I did when I was a kid.
Preach!
I am from MI too and I only wear thick socks with boots from the end of November till Mid March. Come spring I am ready for slip on shoes and then flip flops. We're tough from MI and frankly the midwest we can withstand alot. At least I can.
That is the difference between the north and the south the north gets 7 to 8 months of winter we get 7 to 8 months of summer
Michigan my whole life and have only worn thick socks when snowmobiling . Not sure why you would need them in every day life
I'm in Scotland and my daily wear is normally a plaid shirt, blue jeans and a baseball cap, or a beanie in the winter.. three out of five, how about that
Flannel is the material not the print. He obviously hasn't learned that yet.
You should order some flannel sheets for the winter. They are awesome.

My folks lived in the UK for 6 years and told us when we visited to get dark shoes, only Americans wear white sneakers. They were right.
That's how the group I was with identified other groups of Americans while in Germany and Austria. 😂😂
Growing up in the sunny SouthWest we wore white anything year 'round, but then more NorthEasterners started to move here and touted their “never wear white between Labor Day and Easter.” When it is hot and sunny and the streets aren't dirty - white is the way to go. It is all regional. Was....
As an American I don’t even wear sneakers I would wear boots all year long.
@@dianagalaxy7928 we broke that rule a long time ago here in Maryland. We don’t care what they’re doing in New England. It’s still hot and humid after Labor Day. I remember last year it was 100 degrees on the first day of fall. I feel like around Halloween is when we switch over.
I’m American and I think white sneakers are so awful and tacky.

Love this channel. I lived in New Orleans, where in a lucky year spring will last about 2 weeks in mid February and I’ve done Christmas shopping in short sleeves and shorts and every piece of clothing was cotton, otherwise you’d melt. Then I moved to Seattle and when I complained about cold feet I was told my 3 layers of cotton socks should be replaced by wool socks. Whaaat? I love reading everyone’s comments because the different regions are so varied. We have quite a diverse country❤️😂❤️😂❤️
That's not flannel, Lawrence. That's just plaid.
It's also a women's shirt, LOL Notice the buttons/snaps are on the wrong side.

Library Minnie lovely memory! My Dad has been gone 18 years and I miss him every day.
Library Minnie God bless you. He’s in a great place now, and you will see him again!
I suggest a flannel pillow case then. Perfect for feeling hugged back. Some people will always be missed and can't be replaced but it will feel better.
Wearing pajamas in the spring is mandatory in the Midwest. If your weather alert radio goes off because there's a tornado coming, you won't have time to get dressed AND get to your safe spot.

Back in the 60s when I was a small child I was walking through a store with my dad, and we saw a man in a baseball cap. I asked dad, "Is that Roger Maris?" He was a baseball player back then that my dad always talked about. But, back then you didn't see people wearing baseball caps that much.

Those Star Wars pajama pants are awesome. By the way, started watching your videos a couple of days ago and have really enjoyed them. Thank you very much and welcome to America from North Carolina!
plaid flannel is completely different.
Clothing styles between the US and UK are much more similar these days than they were 40 years ago when I first visited the UK as a kid. You really knew you were in a different place just by the clothing then. Now especially among the younger generations there is virtually no difference at all, you wouldn't know if you were in London or New York just by the clothes. There still are some of the older generation in the UK that still wear tweed jackets and the like, but those are few and far between
Flat caps and tweed has become the new black tie .
Peaky blinders brought it back.
I think Land's End makes flannel lined jeans. That brand's clothes wear forever!
Try L. L. BEAN
@@MattStMarie-bm5sq lol, yes. Got mixed up.
Model's has them as well, and they are fairly well made.
Merino Wool socks are an affordable luxury that everyone living in a cold climate should wear.
I wear them in Texas
Wool keeps feet dry
My feet sweat to much in wool socks. Sweating sock equal cold feet.😁
I wear a hole in them too fast.
I wear wool socks nearly year round. Thick wool socks in the winter, thin wool socks in the summer. They do a great job of regulating the temperature of my feet so they stay either warm or cool depending on the season. Wool wicks the moisture off my feet while cotton socks trap the sweat and end up making my feet damp, uncomfortable and smelly. Since I started wearing primarily wool socks my feet barely smell at all anymore.
Alpaca wool is even better!
Waterproof too!
When it comes to pyjamas, I wore them as a young child, then oversized t-shirt in my teens. Then nothing as a young adult, then reverted back to pyjamas when I became a parent as parents are on call all night.
Started wearing flannel again this fall and winter season. Who knew it was back in style? You should get a jean jacket next.
Weird! I have TWO pairs of socks like that. One pair is brown and blue and the other is blue and brown.
Ha ha think here it's black and brown or maybe there black and blue hmmm
Good grief, man. You're in the midwest. Ditch the cheap "old navy" and wear Duluth Trading. They're the most fantastic work pants (er, jeans?) ever, and they're based just up the coast in Wisconsin. Jiminy Christmas, support your people!

“Spring is upon us?” I heard there was about to be a huge snowstorm in the Midwest.
Moved to a very hot and sunny state six years ago, from a very cold and rainy European country. Something I quickly adopted was wearing shorts at pretty much all times, and basically all year around. It looks goofy and kinda trashy, but when it's 90+ degrees eight months a year, four of which are topping 100+, you really don't have a choice unless you are ok with being uncomfortable or if you have an extremely high tolerance for heat and/or no sweat glands.
Perhaps you are now ready to move to Wyoming for a more powerful winter experience: Spring is in June, Summer is in July, and Fall is in August.
BS, I was there for work this summer and it snowed on us in late June. Our springtime in Texas is wearing shorts and putting sunscreen on.
i can relate
@J Paterson A person's body does a lot of adjusting. I lived many years in hot places and it was OK. But now, anything over 50 is real nice until you get to 78+ then it's too hot. Wyoming's cooler average temps from April to mid-October is wonderful. Never mind Eskimos, don't try to sell air conditioners in Wyoming.
We did get to 105 in May a few years back in Casper. What the??? Agreed, the winters are brutal, mainly because of the massive winds.
That's the same as Chicago
I remember when you only had 5k subscribers. Your channel has grown so much and the quality is just as great now as it was then ❤️
Old Navy jeans are the best! This is something so specific. Thank you for including it in your list. And as someone who also lives close to Chicago can confirm: thick socks are amazing.
Living in Chicago you know our Springs tend to be every season of the year on a day by day basis. I especially love walking to work in a blizzard the day after sitting out under a hot sun with a beer.

The baseball hat is incredibly useful for exactly what it is designed for, keeping the sun out of your eyes. I always drive with one, unless we have a solid cloud cover.
Flannel is incredibly comfortable, but wrinkles easily, and is not durable.
Cheap Flannel. It comes in different density. Really good flannel holds up well, and doesn't really wrinkle if you hang it up.
Yea, buy some quality flannel, and it will last a long time.
Four big American clothing Stores for winter is L. L. Bean, Cabela's, Carhartt's, and Columbia. I almost forgot North Face. Clothes for camping but not used for that purpose seem to be the trend of America these days. It's almost like we are always ready to be out in the wilderness but never go.
lol That's so true, especially in urban areas. Though I would say there are a lot of people who enjoy the outdoors, even just casually. But, as someone who does actually camp, hike, backpack, spend time outdoors any chance I get, I'm not complaining about outdoor clothing being more readily available, and I like finding outdoor clothes that also look nice enough to wear to work.
Growing up in Norther Michigan, Sorel boots was another brand name that was extremely popular and with good reason. A good pair of Sorel's can keep your feet warm and dry for a lifetime...
As an American who has lived in England off and on, I'll tell you what I purchased at the market in Witney and still wear around Southern California; A tweed scottish cap, and a nice green vest with lots of pockets like a fisherman might have. I was most impressed by how the serious Methodist's dressed on Palm Sunday. They had these like full body length dark wool coats. The whole get up matched. Looked to be quite expensive, much like a suit in England can really set you back a few bob, but are also high quality.
In the northwest, we wear flannels in the summer because the weather can change suddenly and get cold. If it's warm, you tie the sleeves around your waist.
Wrangler jeans from Wyoming are lined in flannel! Heaven!
Flannel shirts are so comfortable. I have 30 of them. I am not kidding.
My teen daughter and I love them. We like to buy 2x, so they are really big and baggy on us, but the men in the house can also wear them, if needed. I think we even have a couple of 3x flannel shirts. They are like dresses on us, but we love them.

Winter socks!! I live in MN now and I had never owned such thick pairs of socks before 😂 but my top tip is the thin wool socks in Kohl’s, they are just as warm and more shoe friendly!!
It’s a sad day that Old Navy Jeans are seems as top billing for jeans. Used to be Levi’s or Wranglers when I was growing up.
Wranglers are still the best quality you can get without paying duluth prices.
Arie Heath I just remember that the top options growing up were wranglers or 501’s. But they got rid of the 501’s so....
Tip Aly Yeah, that’s why I switched to wranglers. Plus they seem to be better quality than what Levi’s is cranking out nowadays.
Old Navy is not top billing for jeans. I have not seen anyone wear old navy since the early 2000’s.
I have just discovered you, you make me laugh and i love you for it. As a native Chicagoan, thanks for not bashing Chicago 🥰

You should be wearing Levi*s jeans. Especially since Levi Strauss invented denim pants in San Francisco in 1853 to sell durable pants to the gold miners. The first ones were made out of sail cloth. He patented the riveting process in1873 that they still use today.
Agree! I'm kind of surprised Levi's didn't make it on here. Even as a poor kid growing up on Walmart clothes for some school years Old Navy was still considered cheaply made clothes in our house.

You're wearing a women's shirt, Laurence. The red plaid shirt.
You know I looked at it, something felt wrong, but I missed it. Good catch.
OMG yes! Laurence, you need to have a conversation with your relative...you can tell by the way the sleeves are sewn and the decorative black and red on the shoulders and the pockets.
Look at the buttons, it's a woman's blouse. Men's buttons are for the right hand since traditionally men dressed themselves. The buttons on a woman's blouse are for the left hand since traditionally women are dressed by their slave or servant.
I wonder if it was re-gifted to him. It is sweet of him to have kept it but he must not have realized it isn't menwear.
We wondered if anyone would notice. I wore Tarah's shirt as a stand-in!
I think what is also interesting is that you get the same things worn in both the US and UK, but by completely different groups of people. In the late 70s/early 80s wearing Adidas clothes and trainers/sneakers outside of a sports environment. In the US, they became associated with hip hop. In the UK, they were adopted by the ‘Football Casual’ subculture of Football (soccer) supporters. And in both cases, this still continues today.
Laurence, you make me laugh, I love your wit ☺ and your videos. Keep them coming! p.s. I'm in my jammies
Thank you for sharing the difference between Britain and USA. I couldn’t imagine not wearing the clothes you described as we grew up wearing them!
If you really want historically American jeans, then Old Navy is new school. For the original jeans look to Levi Straus. This is where it all began to serve the gold miners in their rough and brutal environment. You could also consider Wrangler jeans as well. These were the brand that most cowboys and ranch hands wore. Not quite as old, but still an American mainstay. The third of the great American jean companies is Lee jeans. These began as overalls, which covered the entire body. They were great for the MidWest where they began to protect the farmers of the great plains in those wide open windy environments and also sported the durability of denim to make them efficient clothing for farm use where money was typically in short supply. The clothes you bought had to last forever. This got abbreviated to bib coveralls, which gave you most of the protection with a more breathable open arms and shoulder configuration.
So you see that these older brands were created in unique environments to serve very specific purposes. And it all started with the little rivets Levi Straus put into all the stress points of his pants were other brands typically fell apart or tore.
Maverick fox stated "As an American I wear Dickies, Carhartt, Cabela's, & L.L. Bean" These are more modern brands with far superior durability and some are insulated as well. They are premium brands and well worth the added expense if you must work outside in the elements year round. Think construction, land surveyor etc.
BTW - The shirt you have on is NOT a flannel shirt. It is a plaid western shirt, and also happens to have been made for a woman. The buttons are on the wrong side, and I'd bet there are "Darts"" sewn into either side at chest level to allow more space for a woman's breasts. Hated to point that out in a public forum, but better you learn it here than to wander into a tough bar one day and get beat up for wearing it. And yes there are places that are just that redneck out there.
If you want a real flannel, look to one of the high end retailers that I mentioned above. Flannel is a type of material that is normally produced with a plaid pattern. Believe it when I tell you there is a big difference. A real flannel will keep you warm and dry in the coldest of weather, and it will last till the day you die most likely. Some of these have been passed down from generation to generation if lightly used. They are really that durable. Check here for more information: sewport.com/fabrics-directory/flannel-fabric
At 50 years old, I still wear only Levi jeans, unrealistically feeling that anything else is just a knock off...
I love wearing Old Navy clothes too. They sre so comfortable and durable. Love your videos very much. I am always checking to see if there new posts.
Thank you!
I’ve found that Old Navy clothing doesn’t drape correctly after a few washes.
the best type of winter socks are fuzzy socks, basically made of blanket material in a good way haha
I love your and lav lukas channels so much!! I swear if I’m on CZcams I’m watching either of you. Would be the coolest if y’all merged a video with eachother like once every two weeks or something! Keep up the work my man, we love you!!!!
I've been trying to look edgy by wearing flat caps, trilbys and the occasional derby. It ain't working in America.
Yeah it's not 1930's new york
I was thinking about getting a flatcap to wear during the virus pandemic, been looking on the big A, they have them.
I love my "boony hats" almost as much as the broad, wire-rim leather hat. The boonies are great in the summer, especially the 100+ F you get around here in August, but the leather one is awesome for most of the year... In direct sunlight, putting it on drops the temperature a good 10 degrees almost instantly, and since I started rubbing it down with linseed oil, it's waterproofed against rain better than a ball cap.
Coupled with my duster (leather trenchcoat) I'm good in all manner of sh*tty weather, and I get the best "go to hell" looks when strolling through otherwise unbearable storms, obviously as comfortable as I'd be in bed. ;o)
It works for me. I started wearing flat caps when I became a skinhead and people inevitably say it the hat looks very British, or like Sherlock Holmes, or like 1930s New York.
Watching this channel makes me feel like you know more about my country than I do.
Haha!
I’m wearing my Old Navy Jeans. I love to wear a flannel shirt instead of a sweater- or cardigan as you would say across the pond.
The "Ponds" were the companions that made this American love Doctor Who! Matt Smith was my favorite Doctor, followed by David!💖 You are so funny, thank you for sharing this with us! 😄
