I remember being on Cardiff Central as a 12 year old boy watching the last class 40 pulling out on the Crewe service. So many popular classes were disappearing from the railways at the time 25's and Peaks were among my favourites.

So many fond memories of this loco. Saturday's at Leeds when it was the on the Carlisle run. So miles travelled behind that thing. Ah, the good old days!

A relatively rare class in south Wales. The majority of workings were to Severn Tunnel Junction from the midlands, with a few going on to other yards in the area such as Radyr. I remember watching D200 at Newport on the "Gwent Valley Explorer" rail tour to Ebbw Vale in 1987, a few months before this trip.

Got my Favourites that were fading away in the 1970s & 1980s, The Class Type 1 and 2 Sulzers, 25, 26, 27, 31, 33, 37, 40, 42,, 44, 45, 47, 50, 52 Westerns, 55 Deltic, and 56 Brush +The age of Steam . Most of these had Distinctive Sounds, More like Extinct now with the Sprinter Units that have replaced them since 1984/85 time, Even the Famed Thumpers with that Distinctive Thrash sound have disappeared off the Main Railways and What's replacing them Italian Made Pendelinos (Nothing against Italy 🇮🇹) Miss the Classic BR sounds, If you want to see or hear, Go to the Many Railway Preservation Society's around the UK 🇬🇧. TO see and hear them. ❤️and The Steam Train just leaving at the end of the Video was a Bonus ❣️

@@aureol40012 I've known him since the 80's also. Got to know him when we both worked for British Gas. I was a uni student working for an agency there in the Summer and me and him would end up each day at the same time in our trucks unloading old cookers in Bolton. On my very last day before going back to uni he just happened to ask if I was doing anything interesting at the weekend and I just mentioned I'd be filming a train, and explained it was called a class 40 and the last time on a train to Skegness. Well that was it, he said he did the same and we both just stood there thinking, this is incredible. We've met so many times at Bolton and only finding this out now on the last day working there !!
Incidentally, I saw your video of 181 at the Picc buffers with 'The End' headboard. I filmed from that spot also. I was probably standing right next to you,or your dad ??

@@aureol40012 Amazing, I was on it too. Went to Sheffield and then filmed out the window back to Picc from there. Mel also gave me copies of tapes filmed by him and probably your dad. The last I saw him was when he turned up at my house out of the blue and asked if he could borrow my tapes of 40's. He wanted to give them to Steve Marshall at Globe Video. Most of my stuff is on those videos.
Last I heard of Mel was he was a driver with West Coast. Presume he's retired now. Is he still living in Stockport area?
