Two “MUST SEE” Waterfalls in Kentucky | Boondocking at Little Lick Campground

  • This week we find ourselves in KENTUCKY! We explore two “MUST SEE” waterfalls that blew us away!
    (36.7716438, -84.5120627)
The first waterfall is Yahoo Falls near the small town of Whitley, Kentucky. As we were hiking the short trail to the waterfall we could not believe the beauty all around us..... it was like we were in an Indiana Jones movie! At one point we came to a rock that looked like a gateway into an ancient civilization. We hadn’t even made it to the waterfall yet but when we did we were equally impressed!
    (36.8389703, -84.3452147)
The second waterfall is Cumberland Falls near Corbin, Kentucky! This waterfall is something special! This is the only waterfall that ,if the conditions are right, you can see a moonbow! A moonbow is a rainbow by the light of the moon. To the naked eye it looks like a white rainbow with just a touch of color but with some long exposure camera magic I was able to get some really cool night moonbow/rainbow photos!
We even found a nice little remote campground in relatively close proximity to both these waterfalls!
54 miles to Yahoo Falls from CG
36 miles to Cumberland Falls from CG
    Little Lick Campground
Old Whitney Rd, Somerset, KY 42501

That access to that waterfall is proof that young people should travel like you are doing because if you wait until you can retire, you won’t be physically able to make the trek. Thanks for taking us there!

As a child, I went to Cumberland Falls a number of times. The lodge there was much like the one in "Dirty Dancing" with dinners every night and a huge dance floor under the trees. Sadly I only got to dance with my brother and not Patrick Swayze. I was fortunate to see a moon bow and was so delighted that you were as well. Your videos of our beautiful country are inspiring! Also for ticks, if you have duck tape, put a band of it wrapped snuggly completely around your ankle and above the calf but with the sticky side out. So when they try to crawl up, they get stuck on the tape.

Another amazing location. I am always amazed at the free camping you find. Here is this beautiful campground with tables and firepits. The grounds are groomed regularly and yet, it is free. It also appeared there weren't too many people there. I am not so much impressed with the amount of ticks you were finding. Holy Cow!!! That might be enough to keep me out of the area until the ticks are gone. The waterfalls were stunningly beautiful!! I had never heard of a moonbow before. As always Carrie, you capture the most amazing pictures. I have to admit, I got butterflies in my tummy looking over the falls...Lol. Wonderful video and location:)

BTW, for those who don't know, you don't want to pull ticks off with a tweezer because it squeezes their body which will make them regurgitate back into the bite & cause an infect to the dog. Buy special tick puller design to catch its head & twist them off making the bite less severe. I carry a tick puller in my wallet because you never know when you need it.

Tree frogs... Did you hike to Eagle Falls? It is downstream from Cumberland Falls. Just cross the bridge and the path is marked. Hubby and I have been there twice on motorcycle trips. It rained both times, so we did not see the Moonbow. The lodge is comfortable and the restaurant serves the same food that all the state parks serve. There is a pool across the street from the lodge.

Another amazing video. Great pictures. If your come to Ohio we have Old Man's cave. Pretty similar. I'm not sure about free camping around that area, but several campgrounds including Hocking Hills State Park. Closer to me there is a small pay on your honor campground in Wayne national forest. Also campground at Burr Oak State Park. Also free camping at AEP or Ohio power lands, they turned part of the property to the Jesse Owen state park. Very pretty around these parts of Ohio. Hope you have fun if you come here. It would be awesome to see you guys. Every time I see a white van I look to see if it you guys, lol. Happy travels.

Just amazing clear lakes and ponds, we were highly impressed. Then we went to Hocking Hills and Old Man’s cave! Truly magic. You just suggested all the kind of stuff we love!! 😀😀😀 Our last day in Ohio was today. Tomorrow we are heading west...slowly. 😀

Wow, congrats on the moonbow shots! Did you notice in your second shot that you have a DOUBLE moonbow?! I have wanted to visit that waterfall for a while. The moonbow is not where I thought it would be -- I always thought it would be at the bottom of the falls. Hope you swing through northern GA, northwest SC, eastern TN and western NC someday -- this region is known as the land of waterfalls because there are hundreds of them. Gotta give you some motherly advice, though - Please be very careful around waterfalls and away from edges. Every year, people die or suffer terrible injuries in the Southern Appalachians because the rocks around waterfalls are slippery due to thin films of algae, even when dry. I have slipped and fallen on dry rocks at the base of a waterfall myself. Many locals play and climb on waterfalls despite posted warnings at the more dangerous falls, but all can be deadly -- please be smarter than them. But again, congrats on the moonbow photos!

I too thought the moonbow would be at the base! It was REALLY COOL to see it! It was SO HOT the day we were there and the pollen levels were terrible for save but so glad we persevered....IT PAID OFF! Thanks for the motherly advice! I am pretty careful but always room to be more cautious!
