Two “MUST SEE” Waterfalls in Kentucky | Boondocking at Little Lick Campground

- This week we find ourselves in KENTUCKY! We explore two “MUST SEE” waterfalls that blew us away!
(36.7716438, -84.5120627)
The first waterfall is Yahoo Falls near the small town of Whitley, Kentucky. As we were hiking the short trail to the waterfall we could not believe the beauty all around us..... it was like we were in an Indiana Jones movie! At one point we came to a rock that looked like a gateway into an ancient civilization. We hadn’t even made it to the waterfall yet but when we did we were equally impressed!
(36.8389703, -84.3452147)
The second waterfall is Cumberland Falls near Corbin, Kentucky! This waterfall is something special! This is the only waterfall that ,if the conditions are right, you can see a moonbow! A moonbow is a rainbow by the light of the moon. To the naked eye it looks like a white rainbow with just a touch of color but with some long exposure camera magic I was able to get some really cool night moonbow/rainbow photos!
We even found a nice little remote campground in relatively close proximity to both these waterfalls!
54 miles to Yahoo Falls from CG
36 miles to Cumberland Falls from CG
Little Lick Campground
Old Whitney Rd, Somerset, KY 42501

That access to that waterfall is proof that young people should travel like you are doing because if you wait until you can retire, you won’t be physically able to make the trek. Thanks for taking us there!
I don’t know 🤷♀️ who could give you two a thumbs down. Your adventures are just the best!!!
I believe that a thumbs down is still counted as "engagement" and actually helps the video reach more viewers. Still, why?
We have a habitual thumbs downer! Every video within the first minute🤷♀️
@@oneadVANtureatatime too bad they're too busy trolling to have a real life of their own. Oh well.
@@PattisArtInnaVan: Exactly. Jealous.
@@maryj.1261 Truth!! Should get off their couch and live a little!
Another fab campground. I bought a bunch of tape lint rollers from the dollar store. To grab the ticks off dog and me.
that's a brilliant idea! I'm going to have to steal it!!! Thank you for sharing!
Loop
Absolutely beautiful 🌈🌝
Have fun and take care and take it easy and enjoy it
Fantastic pictures
Awesome
A moonbow! I've never heard of that. Now I want to go and photograph one. Thanks for another great video!
Beautiful pictures of the Moonbow! Thank you for sharing. Namaste
The Water Falls are beautiful. We just stayed 3 nights at Niagara Falls. We loved both Canadian and American Falls.Stay safe and keep sharing the great videos. Hard work but you do a great job..God's blessings...oh give Roodle a big hug from our Bailey.
Beautiful scenery. This was one awesome video. Sorry Dave about the allergy attack.
Another wonderful sharing!
Pre RVing we stayed at the historic Cumberland Falls Lodge which was renovated.
Now we have another beautiful area to see Yahoo Falls!!
Those midnight photos are absolutely amazing. Carrie, it's been so much fun to follow along your photography progress! Great work guys as always!
Thank you! The photography part is my fun time and I love doing it and sharing. Always hoping to grow and learn new skills!
Wowza! Kentucky was not on our radar, But it is Now! Those waterfalls looked amazing! Awesome job guys! 💚
As a child, I went to Cumberland Falls a number of times. The lodge there was much like the one in "Dirty Dancing" with dinners every night and a huge dance floor under the trees. Sadly I only got to dance with my brother and not Patrick Swayze. I was fortunate to see a moon bow and was so delighted that you were as well. Your videos of our beautiful country are inspiring! Thank you for sharing!!
Wow, neat beetle!!!!!
I love Kentucky in the fall, no ticks!! My husband and I used to visit there every year for a long time. So much history and beauty. Thanks for taking me back down memory lane.
We’ve got to learn the tick season I think!
Looking down that waterfall gave me chills and butterflies lol
Awesome video. Another great campground. The ticks were insane. Keep on living the dream. HAPPY TRAILS
Good evening Carrie, Dave & Roodles ! Thank you for another wonderful video ! What an amazing place with the cool waterfalls ! You both have an eye for capturing Nature's beauty ! Sorry to hear about your allergy reaction, I know how bad they can get ! Keep your baggies sealed & keep smiling !
Such beautiful intro footage!!!
Love the beautiful campground!! Wonder if you can hang a hammock from the hooks or a clothes line??? I love the pull through sites, lol, I suck at backing up my trailer😂😂😂 oh darlin Roodle, lookin all spiffy🤗💖 cool night shot!!

Was anyone else reminded of the movie Starship Troopers with the close up of the bug at the 24:00 minute mark?
Congratulations on moonbow 👏 Great photography!
Thank you! We needed a full moon and a clear cool night to see the magic. We got it all! 😀😀😀
Chasing moonbows! 👍😏🇨🇦🌲
What a beautiful little flower.
Beautiful spot, such a bonus that u take wonderful pixs! Thank You!!!
Such a beautiful area. Terry has always loved Kentucky and we are looking forward to exploring it together! Thanks for sharing some amazing places to go!!
That waterfall is beautiful. The cave would be a perfect spot to camp. KY is a beautiful state. I'm very lucky to have been able to travel with my family every summer.
I love Yahoo and Cumberland, KY has a lot of waterfalls, glad you enjoyed my home state.
Thanks for another great, informative video! Happy trails! 👍
Love the video, hate the ticks! Throw those ticks in the campfire! Beautiful waterfall shots!
Wow, thanks so much for sharing. Thanks for inspiring us to visit!
You're welcome! We hope to be going back again soon too.
Great photography. Well done👍
Beautiful photography!!
Thank you!
Great video again! Love those midnight photos!
Great job with the MoonBow!
+Lorraine Robison thank you! It was a very cool experience
Ugh so scary!!! The ticks, I mean! Gross!!!!!
Beautiful video, thank you so much.
Very nice find. With ticks, I crush them with anything I can find. You found a lot, that's a lot of crushing 😁
I live in Kentucky and really appreciate you showing how beautiful our state is in some places. Congrats on getting the moon bow! Been to Cumberland Falls many many times and only caught it once. I feel the allergy pain. The past few weeks we've had some of the highest pollen counts ever recorded. Enjoy your time in Kentucky, and please come back.
Thank you, Shawn! I know now to take my allergy pill every morning. 😂 We are honored to show off your home state. Thank you for your kind words! We love this lifestyle and sharing these amazing beauties .
Pretty cool! Kentucky is a great state. Hey Roodle! By the way we finally got our Sumo springs in. Will be tackling that soon!
Wow! What a super spot! And the BEST photos too-unbelievable! Can’t believe there weren’t a bunch of people there. Your videos are great guys! ❤️ Thanks for all you do!
Also for ticks, if you have duck tape, put a band of it wrapped snuggly completely around your ankle and above the calf but with the sticky side out. So when they try to crawl up, they get stuck on the tape.
Loved the waterfalls. Great shot of the moonbow.
Wow those photos are just phenomenal Carrie just phenomenal
Thankyou! I’m loving the nighttime long exposure photography. I’d love to learn more about photography the night sky!
There are so many things I have not heard of and a moonbow was one of them. Thanks for showing it to me. The waterfalls were beautiful and sounded so nice. Dave you are a boy Scout at heart and Carrie is a girl guide . Loved the video. Take care and have fun🤣😝😜
That be us! 😂😂 We keep learning new things every direction we turn, We love this lifestyle. Thank you for your wonderful comment! 😎
You guys always manage to find the most amazing places and there no one there. Incredible. And I’m only 14 minutes into the video.
Thanks for sharing with us. 🙂
Safe travels Dave, Carrie and Roodle 🚐
The moonbows were so cool!
They were! I was glad we persevered and witnessed it! I had never heard of it before
I can't believe it, I've been singing the "Roodles" song! 😊
Amazing !cave and waterfall ,I had fun going with you wandering the beauty of nature. Wonderful journey!
Indeed; the question of the ages, why no one else was there. Probably because they’ve been told you have to go to the western deserts to boondock. Good. Another brilliant illustration of free camping.
The first time we came east we were stressed about where are we going to boondock... the 2nd time (this time) it was so much easier! You got to do some homework but there are some amazing places to discover! We are about to start heading west but we already know we will be back to the east again! We are already planning our next trip!
@@oneadVANtureatatime were you able to find any places to boondock in MD or PA? Are you planning to go to either of these states cause I would really be interested to see what you find. I live in Pa and work in MD, I want to Vandwell (save $) but not finding any way to do this. Loved this video need to go back to KY and find this place.
What a beautiful place! I thought you guys were pulling a funny with the moonbow- that was so cool! If you have cotton balls and rubbing alcohol. Saturate the cotton balls in the rubbing alcohol. Throw it in the bag. It'll kill the ticks.
Yahoo Falls looked great. Fantastic peaceful place. Enjoying the photographic skills as always.
Thank you, Denise! I found it Crazy how an area can be so beautiful and yet there was nearly no people there to enjoy it. What a wonderful area!
What you were hearing were tree frogs, not cicadas. Totally different sound. Loved the video!
Well it was a cool sound! We are about to start heading west and I’m afraid we might miss the cicadas!
Would you guys know the name of the bird calling at 4:30?
@@cesalt2408 no, but it certainly caught my attention!
@@cesalt2408 it’s a whip-poor-will
@@oneadVANtureatatime LOL don't be upset about that!! My niece lives in DC and says they're so loud and obnoxious they keep her up all night!
Great video thank you 😊
We love Yahoo Falls! We did an overnight hike around it a few years ago (in March before tick season). Super cool to see it again! Thanks for taking us along. 😊
We loved the area!
Thank you so much for sharing all of your campsites! You guys find the BEST spots and I am taking notes for when I travel thru all of these gorgeous areas!
Thank you! We have a journal-type book that we write each state in and we add places for “ must see” in each state!
@@oneadVANtureatatime great idea! I have mine listed on my phone under "must sees" LOL
Great video...love your content!
Thank you, Julia! 😀
I know this may be a stretch, but that rock formation looks like a displaced Easter Island head. lol Ohmyosh, you captured the Moonbow!!! What an phenomenal experience!
@@freedomdoveYay, I'm not alone! Enjoy your weekend.
It truly felt like we were in a foreign jungle! The nose has a Easter Island look for sure😂
Absolutely incredible! Yes that did look like a mini Niagara Falls. What incredible places you see...and thank you for sharing them with us because otherwise we would not know they exist. Amazing footage and pictures! Gorgeous place! I have to admit the ticks would cause me to have the heebie-jeebies! Every single one of your videos is outstanding and so much work goes into them...it shows! Safe travels! 👍👍👍👍👍😁
Thank you, Marilyn! We get the Herbie-jeebies as well! Especially after dark near sleep time. Meanwhile Roodle is sleeping with his feet straight up in the air. 😀
We live nearby. Love our Kentucky home! Great video!
Right on Denise! Kentucky was a very pleasant surprise. It is one of those states that we have not heard much about. So much to explore and not overcrowded with tourists. 😎
Absolutely W.O.W. On the moonbow!!
I adore the Roodle Commercials!!! If it wasn't for the pesticides, I'd be wearing flea and tick collars on my ankles!! So crazy beautiful! I hate that my first thought was Listen for banjos! Argh!! Feel better Dave!! Allergies suck!! ❤️
The waterfall sounds Musical
Not sure who enjoys your videos more, us or our Great Dane. He loves to see Roodle, he even got out from under the cozy covers of the bed way early this morning when we told him Roodle was on.
To funny! Roodle is getting quite the canine fan club watching😂😂😂
Hope ya'll come to West Virginia. We have great mountain beauty here and much stuff to do including:whitewater rafting, lakes, Summersville Lake is largest man made lake in the state (60 miles of coast line)caving, cliff climbing, biking .
Hi You Two and Roodle ~ I really enjoyed this! I’ve driven through Corbin KY and stopped once at Boonville area and wish I’d explored areas West of ‘75’. Dave and Roodle are almost wearing similar haircuts! So cool! I love your dialogue Carrie and the beautiful scenery! Thank You! 🐶😃
so happy you enjoyed Kentucky , this is my family history place my grandfather helped caved the stones for the bridge and the schools in several counties around . Yes the Moonbow is awesome to see I've seen it few time.
Ok - I've watched every video and seeing the Moonbeam Rainbow was the most awesome video I've see. Awesome job!!!
Right on Tom!! We appreciate your kind words! We keep experiencing new “ firsts” and this was one for sure. We are so honored to be able to share our advanture with you. 😀
Great location and a beautiful area. Water falls are my favorite places. Great pictures 👏 I studied film photography back in the day. This is motivation to pay more attention to my digital camera and put away the cellphone camera.
Always a thumbs up 👍
Right on, J.G! You will finally have time to follow your passions. We are excited for you to get started and have fun. 😀😀😀 I am excited about Carrie getting more into night photography and most exciting about her diving deep into night timelapse work.
Another amazing location. I am always amazed at the free camping you find. Here is this beautiful campground with tables and firepits. The grounds are groomed regularly and yet, it is free. It also appeared there weren't too many people there. I am not so much impressed with the amount of ticks you were finding. Holy Cow!!! That might be enough to keep me out of the area until the ticks are gone. The waterfalls were stunningly beautiful!! I had never heard of a moonbow before. As always Carrie, you capture the most amazing pictures. I have to admit, I got butterflies in my tummy looking over the falls...Lol. Wonderful video and location:)
Many times the pay campgrounds are full and the free ones are empty, it's a crazy thing 😂 Yes, we get tired of the tick-infested area quickly and have to move on. Thank you for your kind words! See you on the road 😎
BTW, for those who don't know, you don't want to pull ticks off with a tweezer because it squeezes their body which will make them regurgitate back into the bite & cause an infect to the dog. Buy special tick puller design to catch its head & twist them off making the bite less severe. I carry a tick puller in my wallet because you never know when you need it.
You need to come on to the New River Gorge in WEST VIRGINIA !
Wonderful video! We have driven by the turnoff to Cumberland so many times…we need to plan a side trip now. Can’t wait to see your next video at AEP campgrounds/lakes. Also, we hope you had a great visit to Hocking Hills-we noticed you took off early from AEP! Kathy and Barry
No. Those weren’t cicadas. I haven’t found any in Cali either but we had them in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. I actually miss hearing them. The sound that make is actually very comforting.
Tree frogs... Did you hike to Eagle Falls? It is downstream from Cumberland Falls. Just cross the bridge and the path is marked. Hubby and I have been there twice on motorcycle trips. It rained both times, so we did not see the Moonbow. The lodge is comfortable and the restaurant serves the same food that all the state parks serve. There is a pool across the street from the lodge.
I really like you guys, and Roodle ❤️❤️
Thank you!
Another amazing video. Great pictures. If your come to Ohio we have Old Man's cave. Pretty similar. I'm not sure about free camping around that area, but several campgrounds including Hocking Hills State Park. Closer to me there is a small pay on your honor campground in Wayne national forest. Also campground at Burr Oak State Park. Also free camping at AEP or Ohio power lands, they turned part of the property to the Jesse Owen state park. Very pretty around these parts of Ohio. Hope you have fun if you come here. It would be awesome to see you guys. Every time I see a white van I look to see if it you guys, lol. Happy travels.
Hi Lori! We did stay at two free camp grounds in the AEP/Jesse Owens State Park. This was so much fun to find and a real gem for Ohio! Over 350 free campsites! Just amazing clear lakes and ponds, we were highly impressed. Then we went to Hocking Hills and Old Man’s cave! Truly magic. You just suggested all the kind of stuff we love!! 😀😀😀 Our last day in Ohio was today. Tomorrow we are heading west...slowly. 😀
@@oneadVANtureatatime that's awesome. Some people don't enjoy what's right in front of them. Glad you enjoyed Ohio. Safe travels.
Love the Moonbow! Did you also try a shorter exposure for a little more darkness? Just curious how that would look.
Great video - thanks for the KY tips! Yay for Eastern places of the states to visit!
Great photos of the moonbow!! How dark was it when you actually took the moonbow pics? You photos look like daytime at midnight. Enjoy your videos. Glad I found you on CZcams! You are a very entertaining family and it's nice to see your excitement of new things you discover along your journey.
I live in this area. Cumberland falls are amazing
Also the white water rafting is super fun too. A must try
Next time you are in Oregon. Look at Sliver Falls State Park!!!
It is on our list!!
Can't tell between the noon pictures or the midnite. Awesome as usual. : - )
Thank you
Caddis Rapid 6 Tent
Campground was nice. Especially free. Love the water falls. I can see why the first one could be dry at the wrong time of the year. The second one was a big one.
How long was the exposure to capture the moonbow? Nice pictures 👍🏼 and great video ✌🏼
Absolutely beautiful!!! Do you use the sss oil on roodle ?? Love the night photos again, and the impressive moon bow!!!!
Just want to let Dave know that he is not alone when it comes to heeding those warning signs in the form of butterflies in the stomach. I also prefer to take in the view a few yards back from the edge of a cliff. Great photos Carrie.
You guys should check out Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Lots of great hiking and views.
Thank you, David for the tip on Red River Gorge! Kentucky has amazing hiking! I will add this to our list.😀
Cloudland Canyon State park...
Did anyone else see faces in the rock at Yahoo Falls?
Wow, congrats on the moonbow shots! Did you notice in your second shot that you have a DOUBLE moonbow?! I have wanted to visit that waterfall for a while. The moonbow is not where I thought it would be -- I always thought it would be at the bottom of the falls. Hope you swing through northern GA, northwest SC, eastern TN and western NC someday -- this region is known as the land of waterfalls because there are hundreds of them. Gotta give you some motherly advice, though - Please be very careful around waterfalls and away from edges. Every year, people die or suffer terrible injuries in the Southern Appalachians because the rocks around waterfalls are slippery due to thin films of algae, even when dry. I have slipped and fallen on dry rocks at the base of a waterfall myself. Many locals play and climb on waterfalls despite posted warnings at the more dangerous falls, but all can be deadly -- please be smarter than them. But again, congrats on the moonbow photos!
I too thought the moonbow would be at the base! It was REALLY COOL to see it! It was SO HOT the day we were there and the pollen levels were terrible for save but so glad we persevered....IT PAID OFF! Thanks for the motherly advice! I am pretty careful but always room to be more cautious!
@@oneadVANtureatatime Well, I am so glad to see photos of it! If I ever make it there, I will know where to look for the moonbow!
I live in Corbin, Ky about 20 miles from Cumberland Falls and have seen the moonbow at the bottom too! When I was a teenager they had a program with lights and a narrator in the summer at night right at the Falls for the moonbow and it was so cool!!
Well done in getting your moonbow, I was surprised at how much daylight you still had at midnight, it's like that in the far north here, but we don't see many photos of it.
Hope you're okay now Dave. Greetings from Sydney Australia.
Would love to go to Australia someday! It was pretty dark except the moonlight. I was taking long exposure(keeping the camera shutter open for two minutes to let as much light as possible in) photos with I think is magical! It makes nighttime look like daytime!
I don’t know if you noticed, but in one of your shots you had a double noonbow! It’s the only one I’ve seen of that falls. You just might have a saleable photo. Amazing. Cheers from Canader eh!
+Susan Scovill I did see that but had no idea it was so rare! Thanks for letting me know!
If you are just dropping the ticks whin you find them they can get on you or your dog next time you walk the trail.
we stayed at Favor Dykes, FL last month and were overwhelmed with ticks. UGH.
The ticks get very tiresome! I have yet to find a remedy that works against them!
@@oneadVANtureatatime we use Maggie’s Farm spray and if we will be hiking through deep grassy, weedy trails, we use Deep Woods Off. Spray around your ankles and calves heavy. The ticks die and then fall off when they bite our dog from the Simpatica he takes monthly. Wish they made something like that for us humans 😃
Beautiful photos! We’re the Moonbow photos done with long exposure?
+K- Lee thank you! Yes they were! If I remember correctly it was a two minute exposure
The ticks in KY OH and WV have been terrible for the last few years,,
Beautiful place... Nice hike... how could anyone give you a thumbs down ... Trolls is the answer. Bad ... Well I enjoy your videos very much always a thumbs up from me. I hope my channel grows..
Great Video!!! You guys have found your groove as commentators in front of the camera! Carrie, How far did you have to walk In the dark to get the moonbow shots? Did Dave go with you? Awesome job!!
The walk was less then 1/4 mile. Carrie did go alone at first but then I joined her. The area felt very comfortable and safe. 😀 Thank you for a wonderful and kind comment! I have learned to take my allergy meds every morning now. 😂
As far as the Grandma's lye soap we really need to bathe in it. But you did say they didn't embed in him so maybe it works a little bit that way. But it does have to touch its skin
Yeah it seems like he would need to be bathed before every hike and that just is not going to happen! So we are still looking for the magical tick repellent!
@@oneadVANtureatatime I really think you only have bath him once with soap and it will it supposed to do.
When it comes to dealing with ticks I've been known for impaling a bunch of them on a Hat Pin.
I'm not a very good tick rights activist.
LOL I drown them in a little soap and water!
Hate Ticks!!! Trying the soap and water next time
@@oneadVANtureatatime works on stink bugs too!
