My grandpa passed away a few years ago and left me an 87 ranger with less than 40k on it. I've been learning how to do maintenance on it, I just finished replacing the thermostat and flushing the coolant, and I'll be doing the gearbox oil next. I really appreciate the helpful video, thanks man!
That's awesome that your Grandpa left you such a cool little truck. I bet he would be glad to know you are taking good care of it. Keep it forever and never sell. Enjoy it for life! Glad to know the videos helped you out.
Thanks for doing this. I have an '86 Ranger, five speed. It was two ports for adding the gear oil. I'm still on crutches after having a major surgery, so the info really helped me got it done and not mess myself up.
Heal up soon! Glad the video helped.
1989 and all the way up Uses ATF or ford transmission red oil.The early ones uses rear end gear oil.
thank you I'm a single woman that can't afford to pay others to work on my truck, so I have to do it myself. I love learning new things lol. I always have all my married female friends asking me to fix their stuff because their husbands have no clue on how to do things and they all tell their wives to call me. again thank you
Pj Johnson that's awesome that you take on the challenge of doing it yourself and willing to learn how to do it right! So, the million dollar question, when you need help where are those friends?? Glad the video was helpful and thanks for your comment Pj, take it easy - Ozz
Rock on!!!
Your doing great, keep on learning :)
You, sir, are a saint. Replaced my fluid with ATF mercon V, (94 ranger 5 speed, triple check correct fluid) Exact same procedure. Thanks so much! Huge help and great video!
Thanks for the comment! - Ozz
Isn't atf mercon v for automatic transmission? Or they also make it in gear oil?
Vince Valerio Yes, Mercon V is ATF but on some later model trucks Ford specifies to use ATF in the manual transmissions. ALWAYS check your owners manual for the correct fluid type to use! Thanks for watching
its not in the manuel,,,not mine anyways.
@@ozzstars_carswhy would it go to ATF if it's a standard gear set?
I have a 93 manual trans Ranger and I am in the process of replacing all fluids and brake system, I bought it as a project truck and its in very good shape. I was wondering how to do it since the shifting is a little rough, but this video was of great help. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Easy to follow and very clear & simple instructions. Much appreciated!
Your welcome Tommy, thanks for stopping by -Ozz
One of the better videos I've seen.
Good luck with your project and thank you for watching.
Oil leaks can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint if it's not obvious. There are dye kits that use ultra violet light to find leaks in coolant, oil and freon applications. Thanks for watching!
Manual transmissions do not have filters, they use gear oil. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching
Your welcome, glad the video helped.
Thanks for the video. This was way easier than I expected it to be!
what i do to fill mine is ill take some type of tubing i use just aquarium air tubing and run it into the fill hole and put other end on the bottle hold bottle upside down and let gravity do the work makes it alot easier on the body.
Go with the flow! Good idea and thanks for watching and commenting!
My 2002 B2300 Manual calls for "Mazda Mercon ATF" for the 5 speed manual transmission.
Check this out from a web search:
Contrary to what some manufacturers may list, I would use Mercon ATF in the older Mazda B2600i. Gear oil is too heavy, and since it is thicker and won't compress, it will drive the gears apart as it meshes through, and over time causes wear to the bearings, and also makes the gears harder to engage. It also causes the transmission to heat up more and reduces fuel economy.
On the '03 B2300 Use Mercon V fluid, or use a synthetic Mercon ATF with added friction modifier like Lubegard.
Good info on the 'newer' stuff. First generation Ford Ranger manual trans use gear oil.
You are welcome Santillan. You are correct, it is difficult to work with one hand while filming. There are many repairs I could show if I had a helper to hold the camera or maybe invest in a new camera with a mini tripod. Thanks for watching!
Just drain, clean the magnetic bolts and refill with new gear oil. Done. No flushing required for regular maintenance. You may notice an improvement when shifting gears, much smoother. Have fun
Got a '94 Ranger...transmission oil smells like gear lube, so I will replace it with the same. Some recommend ATF, but I will stick with what's in there...thanks for the vid!
yes some later model Rangers with a manual transmission did use ATF (red in color) , some earlier models used gear oil like the '87 shown in the vid. Thanks for your comment
You could try harbor freight, they have cheap hand pumps for around $5. If you are only using it one time it should work fine. Also try any local auto parts store. Thanks for watching
Thank you very much I just got my ranger I was sick with head 8 plugs and wires in it and then defined know dipstick but that I had to do this thank you very much you help me out a lot
Glad to hear, thanks for your comment Lorry.
Thank u bubby got a 94 ranger wasn’t sure about what grease or were the fill plug was u covered it thanks
Muchas gracias señor

Thanks dude helped a bunch
Thanks for the video. Have a Ford Bronco II , 1988 V6. The same transmission :-)
Your welcome Jota. Yes, both the Ranger and Bronco II share the same powertrain design.
Thanks this video was very helpful, going to do a transmission flush on my 89 ranger today!
Thanks for your comment Ryan. Take it easy- Ozz
You answered all my questions thank you!
Just wanted to say thanks for the video

Ami Khimji good news.
my Ranger is a 1986 4x2 2,3 super plain and basic my transmission looks like yours to a T but i changed the fluid with atf but after i swaped it doesnt sound very good at all and after watching this and the results of my test drive i dont think atf was supose to go into it idk how to tell if if its mazda or mitsuishi but its my only car and its been hell in a hand basket to get a straight forward answer so maybe some one here could help idk where to find like a part number on the transmission or anything but it looks almost exactly like yours in the video same flat pan and drain bolt location
First generation Rangers use gear oil in all manual transmissions.
Thanks for watching

Thank you. I know I can get this done know.

Thx man u save my job
Is there a gasket on the drain plug. Only 2 QT to fill this transmission? Thanks
Great video, good suggestions.
Thanks
Great video! Info I can use!! Thanks!
You're welcome Mr Nice, thanks for the comment!
thanks good video. just what I needed. :-)
Thanks for watching and commenting Greg
I have a 2004 Ranger, and the fluid has to be Mercon ATF, according to the manual. BTW, Mercon ATF is no longer made, but has been replaced by Mercon V. I believe this is the case for all Rangers from 1989-up. Just stating this so folks don't screw up by using the wrong fluid.
More info in the description.
Just bought Mercon ATF 11-1-2020
Thank you very good video.
You are very welcome Carlos. Happy Holidays- Ozz
Isn't it GL-4 and not 5? I heard the 5 can eat the synchro's. I also have the same trans and have a concerning notchy shift issue.
GL-5 it is!
@@ozzstars_cars thank you! Would it matter if anything? I’m currently running GL-4 with Amsoil. Thanks for your time!
@@gmax341 notchy shift, like hard to put into gear? Check the clutch.
@@ozzstars_cars just went out for a stroll and the clutch peddle seemed to do much of nothing. Checked the fluid reservoir and it was pretty empty. I believe the notchy shifting issue is because of my clutch not actuating .
How many quarts of gear oil does it hold? Mine is low and i only have 1 spare quart of gear oil and i need to know how much more to get for a fluid change.
Probably close to three. My F-150 with the Mazda transmission took almost a full four quarts to the bottom of the fill plug, so you might want to get three more quarts of the same fluid just in case you need the extra quart. You can always return the extra quart if you don't need it.
Hey thank you, so one last question, do you ever have to flush a manual transmission or is that only for automatics?
Great vid, easy to follow and understand, gotta change my gear oil tmoz, thanks! Subbed
Appreciate your comment and thanks for subscribing!
Hi mate nice video, I was watching it to find out what the Allen key bung is for, you have removed it in your video but don't mention it?
thanks. What allen key, not sure what you mean? What time mark in the vid?
+Ozzstar the one to the right of the one you fill into, it is not screwed in in the video, it looks like another fill bung
I have a 1994 Ford Explorer Sport 2 Door - 173000 miles.
What would be the best transmission AND what would be the best differential fluid I can put in?. I don't mind spending the extra $$$ or going full synthetic.
Amsoil, it's awesome. Shoot me a message if you need the name of a dealer
Good show... good show..
+DOT ROT thanks!
Hey I have the same transmission in my Ford courier, I can see that there are another drain plug and filler plug (torx) ttowards the back of the transmission, any idea what is it ? Does it need to be drained and refilled too ? Thanks
would you recommend this fluid for a 91 ford ranger xlt 2.3? idk how much to put in. Im having infrequent shifting issues (mainly going into first) and want to change the trans. fluid. I know it won't fix it but still needs done. i think my clutch isn't fully disenguaging.
Frank Zammetti you need to find out which trans model you have, then verify the fluid. Contact a Ford dealer service department if you can't find that info online. The fluid may help the shift problem but if the syncronizers are worn then the trans has got to come apart to fix the prob.
idk how to do that plus sign reply thing but thanks. I have to release the clutch pedal a good bit before the truck starts rolling so I'm guessing it's not a clutch rubbing issue. I'll look into the synchronizes and see if that fixes it. thanks man
do u have clutch mater cyl..if so ,,sounds like u need to bleed the slave cyl on tranny,,sounds like u have air in clutch master cyl.and good to go.
What kind of fluid did you use ?
I have a 97 Ranger 2.3L M5OD .
Thanks great work.
I have a question though: my truck is the same but Mazda, about 80 inches to the rear of the same plugs you used I have another one with a torx screw. Do you know what that's for???
Send me a picture of it and maybe I can help. ozzstar@aol.com
Why don't people ever read their manuals? Rangers with that Mazda M50D1 transmission requires Dex/Merc ATF, NOT GEAR OIL!! Any other ATF will eat the seals and gear oil... well that's not supposed to be in there AT ALL!
I have an 85 ranger. 4x4, v6, 5spd. How often should this process be done? I just bought the truck and it is my daily driver with a 55 mile daily round-trip.
I usually do it once every 10-20 years. ;-)
@@ozzstars_cars lol. Thanks. I bought this because I've always been mechanically inclined and I've wanted to learn to work on a vehicle and figured this would be the perfect place to start it's also how I learned to drive a 5-speed.
They are great little trucks and the parts for the older models aren't that expensive. Long live the manual trans! Have fun Amanda.
does yours have an oil leak? mine does but im not exactly sure where its coming from.
Is this the Mazda or Mitsubishi transmission? Been trying to figure out which one I have for hours
All the fluid info you need is in the video description above.
Ozzstar, I have an '86 2.3 manual 4x4 with a trans code of "5" which supposedly means the Toyo Koygo trans. My chilton's says that the "Mazda (Toyo Koygo)" takes atf, Mercon. But is that only after a certain year? I want to top off my fluid but after reading so much conflicting info I don't know what to put in it. Evidently this is a hot topic among ranger enthusiasts. It definitely has gear oil in it now but maybe that was a mistake by the previous owner. I've had it for six years and no problems so the gear oil seems to work right? I did need a new shifter tower a few years ago though. Could that have been an indication of wrong fluid? Any help is appreciated. Also, I'm curious what trans you have. My looks the same. Thanks.
My 1987 Ranger has trans code 5 which is the Toyo Koygo 5-speed manual. The spec for the trans is "Standard transmission lube" #D8DZ-19C547-A Ford spec #ESP-M2C83C, which is 75W-90 gear oil. It is that simple. I used 80W90 GL-5 because that's what was available to me. The info out there is ridiculous and I have people not knowing keep talking about automatic trans fluid used in there manual Rangers. THAT IS FOR NEWER MODEL YEAR RANGERS, not applicable to the early first generation. Thanks for stopping by and I hope this explanation has cleared up any confusion you may have had.
Thanks Ozzstar. It’s nice to hear the verdict on this. I was leaning toward gear oil and that’s what I put in mine after scrutinizing and referencing many sources. So, the chiltons manual is wrong. So is that guy at Napa I talked to. Just made another cross country trip in my ‘86 ranger and all is well.
+Matthew Clarke awesome man!
I have a '90 with M5ODR1 and it takes atf. That's recommended from Ford.
@@ozzstars_cars ty so much for clarification. just got an 86 man ranger and info its few and far between on something that old
Is this same process for 2000 F150 5 speed?
Good evening my friend. I live in greece and i have a mazda bt50 model 2007 2.500 cc . It has a manual transmission and i want to tell what kind of oil should i put in the manual tranmission and the transfer box . Now i have 75_9O oil but someone tell me that i should take atf. I wonder if you can help me with this? Thank you
Only the first generation manual Rangers used gear oil, the rest are ATF. Info is in the description above. Thanks
Auto is a 5 speed as well.
I thought these ranger transmissions called for mercon ATF?
some do. check the model year and which model transmission is in the vehicle. thanks for watching
75w80 just ,?
What do you do if your shift is hard to change gears?
Check the condition of the clutch disc, pressure plate, slave cylinder and master clutch cylinder. Most likely the problem if the synchronizers are okay.
Ozzstar's Cars thanks will check now
have a 91 ranger 2wd how many quarts of oil do I need?
+mattnich97 3 quarts
I have an 87 ranger, 4 speed with over drive. People tell me ATF others say 80/90 and one says 85/90... what do I use?
Well I have decided to go with 80/90.. screw the auto zone guy. ha thanks!
+Zoie Randall there were two different transmissions used in the 87' model. mine called for gear oil. Find out which design your truck has....then you can determine the correct fluid.
i havea 93 6cyl 4wd 5 sped, ranger,,after all this reading,i still have no clue really wat to use,,,,gear oil or wat,,just tell me wat u wuld use.i love my ranger,,and i wouldn't want to hurt it,,,thanks, wait fr ur ans.
Do u know the socket size to let the oil out? Thanks
Hi David, it's 24mm, watch in High Def at 4:10, take it easy - Ozz
Thanks i found it after looking thru some forums. I will be making my own gasket tomorrow u think it will work? I went to autozone it had to be a special order so they recommended me a gaskey maker
does it matter what gear your're in?
bob saget no when your changing the gear fluid, only when your going down the road bob, take it easy
About how much volume does it take?
i think it was just shy of 3 quarts.
You are using the wrong fluid. A Ford Ranger 5-speed manual transmission takes ATF, not gear oil. Check your owner's manual.
First generation Ford Rangers spec 80w90 gear oil for standard manual transmissions. Thanks for watching
Not just any ATF either, it has to be Dex/Merc or the seals with be destroyed. I know this from experience!
transmisión mazda/95GT040
I have A 97 ford ranger and my fill plug is stuck. any ideas?
Have you tried using a penetrating oil? Heat would be the next plan
I'm having the same problem with my 2006 ford ranger xlt just got the gearbox repaired and broke a wrench tryna open it plus it looks easy to strip so I don't think I should take a hammer and chizel to it so MY QUESTION is could I fill it with 2.5 liters of gear oil and drive it around and then once heated try opening it. I already have my gear lever off so I'm gonna fill oil in there thanks alot
Wats the weight of the gear oil sir?
4:36, you may have skipped that part.
How many quarts
Watch the entire video.
Does it need to be in neutral?
For what reason are you asking?
To drain and refill the transmission
@MrsBuddevil no that doesn't matter but in gear, parking brake set is the safest way.
@@ozzstars_carsthank you.
How many oil
How many you got?
you did not change the filter????
No Chuck, manual transmissions do NOT have a filter.
+Ozzstar Oops sorry thanks for the info.. :)
Sorry. Excellent video but had to give a not like because, except for the 90s Rangers before the Mazda engine, the transmission used ATF. The manuals state this.
The description clearly states the following: Changing the gear oil in a 1987 Ford Ranger 5 speed transmission, 2 wheel drive. The first generation MANUAL transmission Rangers with either a MAZDA or MITSUBISHI 5 speed spec for Ford part # D8DZ-19C547-A with specification ESP-M2C83-C which is 75W90 GEAR OIL.. Consult your service manual for the type of trans fluid your vehicle requires. Thanks for stopping by.
gear auto oil
I thought those 5 speeds were built to use ATF fluid?!...
Not the oldie but goodies, you must be thinking newer. This is 30 year old stuff
They must have changed models between 87 and 89. My 89 takes ATF and has drain in center of pan. Or maybe its due to being 4WD.
+Smith John also keep in mind that these early Rangers could come with one of two different manual transmissions. The owners manual is key or have Ford run the VIN
Only the M50D uses ATF
Not true! All use Dexron or Mercon. No gear oil in any Ranger. HE thinks this a "1st Gen. IT's an '87. Look at this site.

Ozzstar, thanks for the video!!!
for me this Looks very bad,
