The cruise ship was launched on 24 June 1995 and completed in May 1996 at Fincantieri in Italy under the name Veendam. Actress Debbie Reynolds became the ship's godmother and she set sail on her maiden voyage on May 15, 1996. The ship was the fourth Holland America Line ship to be named after the Dutch town of Veendam. Her registered owner was Wind Surf Ltd and she was registered in Nassau, Bahamas.
The ship is 219.21 meters long, 31 meters wide and can accommodate 1350 passengers on its 13 decks. Its crew consists of 568 people and the maximum speed it can develop is 21 knots.
Veendam was transferred to the Netherlands flag in 2006 and owned by HAL Nederland NV, Rotterdam, continuing under the Holland America operation. In April 2009, the ship underwent a dry dock refit at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport in the Bahamas, which included major changes to her stern. Two new porch shelter decks were added which required the removal of a section of her upper decks and the bridge wings were extended. To structurally support the resulting change in weight, a Ducktail was added to the ship's hull.
During the winter months, the Veendam operated from South American ports and, during the summer season, she sailed from New York. On November 11, 2017, the cruise ship arrived at the port of Piraeus as part of its 50-day world cruise in the Mediterranean.
The ship was sold in July 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, to Greek shipping company Seajets along with sister cruise ship Maasdam (Aegean Myth). Veendam was renamed Aegean Majesty by registered owner Mediterranean Dream Inc, moved from the Netherlands to Bermuda and docked in Corinth. In the early hours of November 7, 2020, due to the stormy winds that were blowing in the area of Corinth, the ship broke its keels and ran aground in the shallows of the port of Corinth. Two days later, she was repositioned without damage and sailed to port.
On February 19, 2021, the Bermuda-flagged cruise ship Aegean Majesty arrived at the port of Aegean and "moored" next to its twin brother Aegean Myth, increasing during this period the number of ships hosted in the port to four cruise ships.
Today, after almost 3 years, only one of the four cruise ships remains tied up in the port of Aegis. From the images we captured with our drone, the Aegean Majesty cruise ship appears to have visible damage throughout her hull and the deck appears to be in poor condition. The future of the cruise ship is uncertain and it may still be waiting today in the port of Aigio to be sold to a new owner or eventually it is intended to be decommissioned.
