      Man, the hornet could do it all. I remember island hopping the arctic circle on Meridian... see, we got the O-K to set up these big-ass slipspace dishes with albatrosses and a bunch of guys.. but when it turns out their fusion coils run out of coolant every few months, suddenly it's *all* up to me. They can carry WAY more on a belly-sling than most people figure
      Needless to say, I had to spend a lot of quality time with that bird before the big sunset.

    • @cyberspectre8675
      @cyberspectre8675 Před rokem +6

      @@Grimpy970 I was stationed aboard the UNSC Against The Wind from '47 to '48. Covies took off half her bow with a ventral beam, so she was dry-docked and we had shore leave on Meridian for about two weeks. IIRC, this was summer of 2547. I was the newbie in my unit and didn't know anyone on that ship, so I went out by myself and ended up having drinks with a couple of army guys. Next thing I knew, I was flying a Hornet into Port Moyne with the pilot strapped to the skid. They had two birds, two stick jockeys, and one of them was so trashed, we had to literally ratchet-strap him to his plane. Somehow I, the 20-something ODST with zero flight experience and wearing civies, had the best chance of getting the bird back to base. Woke up the next morning in a motel with a civilian contractor on my chest. What a night!

    As someone who is learning about turbine engines for my career, I'm very impressed with you explaination of axial and centrifugal flow compressors. The intakes up near the front are pretty hard to explain, but I think you did a good job with proposing ideas. I would think those could also be intakes for an APU (Auxillary Power Unit) to run accessories (hydraulics, pneumatics, electrics) since the main 2 turbines don't seem to have accessories connected to them. In modern airliners, all APUs utilize a centrifugal compressor for packaging purposes, so I would surmise the hornet would be no different.
    We could also combine our two theories, the APU being used to run accessories and the exhaust of the apu being routed into the thrust vectoring manifolds for a "boost" function.

    • @hf117j
      @hf117j Před rokem +1

      I haven't actually gone to school to learn these things but I will say that the Hornet is much less feasible than the wasp. The wasp has four point of thrust meaning the cg is not as important due to being able to adjust them. But the hornet basing off a 3d print with the cockpit hollow has a cg very far forward of the engine nacelles. The tail's gotta be way more dense to balance it and that creates the issue of total weight and fuel efficiency. It's a whole thing. That being said I want an rc version

    • @domvasta
      @domvasta Před rokem +1

      I think it's probably a thermal turbo fan, the front intakes are cooling for the internal fusion reactor. With bleed air expelled through vents at the rear. The engines could be feed perpendicularly to the rotational axis with hydrogen or methane for the afterburner/exoatmospheric operation.

    Aircraft mechanic here. That secondary jet intake may be for an APU (auxiliary power unit) that provides electrical, hydraulic and or pneumatic power to the aircraft till the main engines start. Looking at the design of the main engines, there doesn't seem to be room for those components (pumps and generators) to be built-in on that airframe so the hornet may need the APU to be run continuously for the main electronics and hydraulics to function.

They call it an auxiliary power unit. And it's basically a micro turbine engine and it's job is to provide electricity for the air craft via whatever means a turbine engine can provide electricity. Having a separate power source than the main engines and batteries make sense. At any rate, an interesting video. Keep up the good work

    17:47 This is quite likely a small jet system like you describe, but for stability, not boost - a 2-jet vtol design is inherently unstable in the pitch axis since there's no way to generate moments pitch moments with 2 aligned engines. So a hot air vectoring system like found in the Harrier is essential to keep the main fuselage stable instead of swinging up and down wildly.

    17:30 so my guess as to the purpose of the third mystery engine is that it’s an APU or auxiliary power unit, a common piece of equipment on modern aircraft that is used to generate power and pressurization before the main engines are started. The pressurization also feeds the primary engines to allow them to start up at the time before their compressor blades are spinning fast enough to allow for ignition. It could also be possible that due to the small size of the primary engines, the APU in the hornet is designed to run continuously even after engine start for bleed air purposes including cabin pressurization and anti-ice equipment as well as being the primary generator for the aircraft. This is not the standard on real world modern aircraft, however modern aircraft also have much larger engines allowing more space for accessory housings such as the generator. Additionally, utilizing an APU for all bleed air functionality allows the engines to provide all their power towards thrust, something that is likely important for a VTOL aircraft especially with engines of that size.

    While it's probably not really necessary, given how advanced UNSC tech is, I might also suggest that the extra intakes on the sides of the hornet could be used to power the auxiliary power/startup engine, as well as possibly doubling as the drive motor for the rotary cannons and the theorized extra air ducts for the engines. I just realized: A possible reason for the Hornet to not be seen often is because it is powered by jet turbines. If the atmosphere around it doesn’t lend well to the design tolerances of what can be accepted as intake air, then I imagine it would be unable to function properly.
    This could be remediated by use of a dual-function, hybrid turbine and rocket engine, though this would severely increase weight, and the amount of time that a rocket powered hornet could remain in the air would be severely limited.
    On that note, Falcons would make a lot of sense for a much broader range of atmospheres. It seems the Falcon still is powered by turbines, but it can theoretically be modified to rotate its propellers using other means aside from a turbine engine.

    • @dsdy1205
      @dsdy1205 Před 7 měsíci

      Honestly with the abundance of fusion power employed by the UNSC I don't think this is an issue - you can replace the combustion chamber with heat exchangers routed through the reactor core, which allows your turbines to work with any compressible fluid.

Which leads me to believe that the vulture craft was not intended for hover combat specifically rather it was to act as a cheaper option to long sword deployment for CAS operations but could also double as heavy medium range gunship. I have always been impressed by the craft but after I joined the US marines my respect for the craft multiplied as any self respecting general would happily March to war against any odds for the chance to get their hands on just one of those crafts

    If those are air intakes on the side of the cabin they are probably feeding some form of auxiliary power unit. Which most jet powered aircraft have to power the electronics while prepping the aircraft Without burning excessive amounts of fuel with the main engines

    • @mathis.docquier
      @mathis.docquier Před rokem

      yeah i was thinking that, it can also be a way to cooldown the electronic, witch is something important but that a lot a people don't know

      @grimmpickens5766 Před rokem

      @@mathis.docquier It's true but if that's all it was being used for then it probably be more at least the weight efficient to take bleed air From the engine behind the compressor and pipe that down to wherever the electronics are being stored instead of having a complete separate fan section

A single video for all the new introductions like the Commando? Just a though, and will keep watching your channel even if that particular one never comes to be.

    It would be cool if the hornet had a "dragonfly" variant. It would have 4 engines and instead two skids it would have a platform.
    Think crysis 3 vtol, I always liked the fact some crysis 3 maps had vtols you could hop on as they go around the map.

    Air Pressure is required above 10,000ft on Earth. Different habitable planets will have different atmospheric pressure so maybe they are just playing it safe so they don't realise the hard way haha

    I'm so heartbroken that the Hornet hasn't made an appearance in a mainline Halo game since 2007.
    I'd argue it's in the top 5 of most iconic Halo vehicles of all time, yet the last we've seen it (in a drivable state) was H2A multiplayer.
    Absolute injustice to such a glorious craft. Easily my very favorite vehicle in all of Halo.
