Both men, fictional or not, served their functions as a teacher / supervisor.

The look on his face before he winks at the private suggests he knows what is coming.

For me it was an action of quiet reassurance during a definite time of up ratcheting stress.

Hard to believe it's the same Bob Hoskins I've seen playing character parts in so many other films! He doesn't look very tall next to other actors, but by God when he's fighting he looks ten feet tall.

When the kid gets hit and he shouts "Shoot straight, you...", you then hear Sergeat Williams shout "Check your range".

It would be splendid to see Hoskins together with Nigel Green fighting Zulus... one with fire of sarcasm in his voice, the other with "no comedians, please" approach... with bayonets and some guts behind it...

Because it's a movie. It's not a true telling, it's just symbolic for the comardeship in the ranks.

Same surname. You find it a lot in the Army when a Private reminds a Senior NCO about themselves being that a surname, the way the Private acts, even looks, etc that SNCO will often want to see that Private advance in their career.
