Pertaining to the first case: Over the years I have known two different guys (no affiliation with each other) who took large quantities of LSD and ended up having a psychotic break while in the midst of said horrible trip. Both of them permanently fried their brains, and had permanent and significant personality changes afterward. That is absolutely a thing that can happen.

Back in university, we had a guy that was rumored to have suffered a mental breakdown due to too much LSD. The story was that the guy had wealthy parents so they kept him in school earning multiple degrees and living in the dorms because it was cheaper than institutionalizing him. He supposedly still had a savant-like mental capacity but zero social skills or ability to take care of himself.
My friends and I tried to approach him in the lunchroom a couple times only for him to flee in panic. I felt sorry for him but at least he seemed harmless.
Always wondered what happened with him since he was still there when i graduated.

      @jeffreycarman2185 Před 3 měsíci +10

So a person in the national parks (according to The National Parks Service) has a 1 in 2.1 million chance of being attacked by bears. Globally, various sources I’ve seen show that there are about 45 bear attacks, in the world each year.
In the last 100 years there have been around 20 people killed in cougar attacks in America. I found one guide that said there had been about 14 cougar attacks (including non-fatal attacks) a year. One statistic I found d showed the odds of getting attacked by a cougar are about 1 in a billion. The low double digits, between 10 and 20 people each year are murdered in National Parks (out of hundreds of millions of visitors) and it is statistically likely that at least some of those killed are likely to be family or acquaintances of the murders.
Meanwhile just having a firearm in the home increases a persons risk of death. Each year about 25,000 people die by suicide or accident and another about 23,000 are murdered by people with guns. People who live with guns in the home are at 3 times the risk of suicide and twice the risk of being killed by a gun. About 46% of all violent crimes are committed by a total stranger (meaning 54% is someone known to the victim). So if you have a Venn diagram of all people killed by strangers and by animals in the wilderness the number must be extremely small (like in the single digits a year). But if toting around a gun on the trail makes you feel better, then go for it.

@@jeffreycarman2185 I am 5'2 and have never weighed more than 100~lbs or around 55kgs in my life. Three times I have been in a situation where I was forced to fight for my own safety and all three times I needed medical attention afterwards. Firearms are the great equaliser for those of us who wouldn't stand a chance otherwise. You neglected to mention where these gun crime numbers come from, the percentage of legal v illegally acquired guns, and even then it doesn't address the great variance in countries with lower current ownership but per capita similar violence statistics. I am from NZ, a country with a very different outset on guns. Until recently ownership was very common, easy to acquire, and we had low gun crime. Yet in the last twenty years we have, with a population moving from 4mil~ to 5mil~ had a domestic violence rate only surpassed by Sudan regularly. There is much more to this picture than simple numbers can explain and for this reason, many women feel safer knowing a firearm will level the playing field between them and some slimeball who thinks they've got the right to take.

I grew up in a family that camped out a lot. This was probably in the early 60's, but we were camping out, then went into nearby Kingman AZ for breakfast and bought a newspaper. Right on the front page was a story about a mom and dad who were murdered while sleeping in their car not far from where we were, the kids were in sleeping bags a little ways away. When the kids woke up the next morning they found both parents dead, their throats slashed.

The fact that mentally ill people have more freedoms than people who need to defend themselves is part of what is wrong with society. I dont think the first person was unavoidable if they I knew about him breofer hand. At least the government knew about him. We were children and young teens (a group of five or six siblings and friends) when we were followed and threatened by someone with a machete or ax. This person stayed just out of sight and kept using the machete to chop into branches as we held on to one-another in an outward facing cluster, each holding whatever weapon we could take to hand. I remember smashing a glass bottle and holding it by the neck as we stumbled down the trail towards our car, the whole time being sure that either this person was going to charge at us from the dark with a deadly weapon, or that we'd get to our car and discover that they had disabled it in some way. Fortunately we were able to jump into my sister's car and it started. Were they seriously considering harming us deterred only by the sound of breaking bottles and my eldest sister's banshee cries to GO AWAY and LEAVE US ALONE!? Or were they just sadistically enjoying scaring a group of children? Who knows? I have never enjoyed being out in the woods at night since that incident when my brother was nine or 10 and I was 12 or 13.

Far more universal. There has been ongoing debate in Australia about the detention of individuals who had arrived in the country without going through the correct channels for immigration. A handful with criminal histories, including sexual assault, had been kept in indefinite detention, which of course upset those who champion individual liberties over societal concerns. They took the matter to the highest court, leading to the release of the detainees. Within the month, all 7 were arrested for criminal activity... including sexual assault . Cue outcry, I suspect from self same crusaders, about the release of these known dangerous individuals into our society.
Likely these men will be deported; unfortunately, citizens can't be deported. In Australia, I know of one case where a citizen was detained for life, with all legal niceties observed. Derek Percy was the vilest specimens ever spawned (his preferred victim was in low single figures of age, and he has been plausibly linked to several unsolved child murders and disappearances), and was convicted and (crucially) committed on psychiatric grounds. Parole and possible freedom were on the cards (indefinite detention being illegal in most countries), but at every appeal, the reviewing experts would return an assessment of "no diagnosable impairment, but do not release". After Percy's death, a storage unit full of his written fantasies was located. It should not have been possible for Percy to arrange this from his level of incarceration, but he managed. What chance would "supervised release" had of success? He would have reoffended within days, if not hours. So thanks are due to those who stood their ground and kept him safely locked away for life.

Those peaceful evening sunsets, the warmth I felt as the sun rose, the gentle whine of the mosquitoes, must have lolled me incapable of seeing the pending doom, the surprise horror and the terrifying what if. The third story is just like one that happened in Czech Republic few years ago. A mother who was about to lose custody on her four year old son took him on a winter walk in the mountains, where they were spending holidays. No one reported them missing until the owners of the inn where they were staying in noticed two days later. Immediately police, helicopters, mountain rescue started looking for them, thinking they may be lost without cell singal, wounded or so. Last proof of where they went was an eerie security cam footage. There's the mother walking with a stern, sad face and the boy behind her, pulling his sled. It took some time. Later they found them next to some forest road. She strangled the boy and hanged herself. It's always so hard to listen to this type of stories. How could the parents decide the way they did, I will never understand.

Bad luck also happens in a big city. A famous German Police Office from Munich wrote a book about his career. There was one murder who sat with friends on a park bench. Later he said, "OK, i go home, have a nice day! But, on my way Home i kill the first person." No one knows, why he had this Idea. The victim was a man on it's way home from Work. Killed with a pocked knife. It took a very long time to find the murder. Problem was, that his friends were not the smartest guys on earth and they we're just afraid of getting in trouble. They never asked questions and they never have answers.

Wasn't there a guy in CA who attacked people on the trails with a machete or axe, way back in the 60s or 70s? My family did lots of hiking and camping as kids - a big batch of kids and my dad. Mom would stay home (relieved to have some time to herself, I suspect). My dad always carried a gun and a machete and each of us kids had a small hatchet and Swiss army knife. We had lots of bear where we lived, but I think Dad was also very cautious about other people. We also always had 3 to 4 big dogs. I never worried about a thing; I guess Dad did all the worrying.

I took LSD in the 1970s. I had a friend who was a chemistry grad student and they made it in his lab.
After I went to medical school and started seeing people who had bad trips in the er, as well as learning about the pharmacology of drugs of abuse, I never used illegal drugs again.
I volunteered at the free medical clinic two nights a week. When suddenly we saw an increase in the number of people who had bad trips.
But I learned is that LSD is difficult to make, the ingredients are expensive and the ingredients are used for much else. That makes it easier for the FDA to monitor who is buying lysergic acid add to catch people who make LSD
PCP came into use in the 1980s. It costs very little to make pcp. The ingredients to make PCP that is hard for the FDA to monitor the production of PCP
Now if you are someone who is trying to get rich off making illegal drugs, which are you going to make?
    1. A drug that is difficult to make, expensive to make, and difficult to hide from the authorities?
    2. A drug that is easy and cheap to make, and for which the authorities have difficulty catching you?
These drugs are illegal so there is no drug quality assurance monitoring.
So usually when you buy LSD you're actually buying pcp. When people can develop lifelong psychosis after just one "trip".
PCP has even been found in mushrooms sold as psylocybin mushrooms.

It seems like EVERY person has some form of mental health problems, myself included. The easy answer seems to be reopening asylums but it'd be nice to have what some other countries do: a social worker that confirms people are actively addressing their mental health issues by seeing psychiatrists and taking their meds. It's basically a probation officer for mental health, if you don't comply with your treatment plan you get committed. Something needs to change because it's only getting worse. Another thing, the doctors in California are so backed up that I have to wait three months to get an appt with my psychiatrist. It's depressing.

Imagine this. You go into the middle of nowhere, rough nature with many dangerous wild animals. Only to be "ended" by a crazy person, for a bit of bread, 2 batteries, and some old jam. Why do we have so many insane people? It's so upsetting that they roam freely, posing a threat to all of us. And there's nothing we can do to prevent encounters like this. They're everywhere. Even in the most remote locations.
It's sickening, you can do everything right in life. You prepare yourself well for all eventualities. You are not foolish, and you do not unnecessarily put yourself in danger. Only to then encounter a crazy person who wipes you and your entire family out.
The first story: It sounds a bit like he only "ended" them because he assumed the couple was homeless and he noticed a 'no camping' - sign. Does that mean he wouldn't have "ended" the couple if he had known they were not homeless, and he had not seen the 'no camping' - sign? What? His "motive" confuses me a lot.

In my younger years I went on a small hike with a friend to my favorite camp spot. Ate some mud bugs (Crawdads) that we had caught picking up rocks. Along with some MRE's I saved from being in the field. After putting out fire, we headed to bed and just a few moments later we hear a truck mudding to out location. It stops probably 150 meters away and then I hear the doors open followed by so many bullets being fired that they had to be rich because it didn't stop for what seems forever. I was already on the ground so all I could do is pray I don't get hit. I had a 44 mag and my friend had a 9mm. We tried to yell at them to stop and I am pretty sure they couldn't hear us. I could not shoot back, I was fearfully enough, but moving anywhere I would have become Swiss. They left as suddenly as they came. In the morning I woke up to a bunch of holes in my tent.

    Kyle,
We love your work however……Imagine our surprise at an ad for a vape Fum? Really off putting even if it is “fun”! Especially after an Everest episode where oxygen is constantly mentioned?😮
