In this ‘online Kathak learning video’, renowned Kathak dancer Pali Chandra traces the evolution of the Indian classical dance form-Kathak.
The word ‘Kathak’ comes from ‘katha’ which means ‘story’. Of the 8 classical dance forms in India, Kathak is the only one that comes from the northern part of India and is an amalgamation of three performing arts- music, dance, and drama.
Kathak has an intriguing history. It had its origins as a folk dance where Kathak dancers moved from one village to another telling stories of what they had seen and passed on information from one segment of society to another.
What started off as a folk dance went through a sea of changes. Its philosophy, content, context, attire, instruments and even language changed and over time have evolved into what we see today. She narrates how temple dancing in Kathak was introduced and traces its history during the time of the Mughals, the British, and post independence and the evolution of various Gharanas. An enchanting history indeed!

Namaste Ms. Chandra. It is beautiful to find your channel. I am from Banaras though I grew up in a small town of Himachal. My parents were a lot into art forms and exposed me and my brother to as many performances over the TV or live as they could. Coming from lower middle class and not so many events in Himachal was a challenge. Still, we have seen performances of several artists including Pt. Birju Maharaj. I never felt like learning Kathak until now. But I now live in Germany and am already 34 years old. I am inspired to learn Kathak and dance when my son is born in a few months. I hope it will help him understand and enjoy his roots.

Mam if i want to learn from u this kathak dance steps how will i do beacuse i am from Bangladesh i want to learn kathak dance
I live in the Caribbean as a result most dance classes teach a melting pot of thedance forms (usually a hand-full of basic moves followed by learning choreography to a song for a remainder of the class). I never understood there were different forms until very recently and as i discovered your videos i realize that my original dance class that i attended when i was 3-6 years old used khatak as the basic steps. As i am starting university soon i would not have the time to dedicate to rejoin a formal dance class. Hence your videos are a God sent. Thank you very much for this gift.

I remember when I was a kid my parents didnt want me learn kathak as it was more associated with courts and courtesans so I ended up learning Bharatnatyam, which is more associated with temples.. I was motivated by fast dances from my childhood.I was really a fan of breakdance,hip hop and all.But when time changes I felt the modern dances doesn't have this intense soul or Bhava(feelings) like other classical dances.We can find more and more deeper details in classical dance especially in Kathakh.It is also fast.My heart is in ecstasy when I am dancing.Guru ji gave me a great motivation. Mam.. I hail from assm from a rural place where this kind of classes are not available.. Once in my childhood I traveled two hours to learn kathak at places but could not continue as I had to complete my studies as well coz I belong to a rural area and have to travel for studies as well..
