  • ☞ 👀 If you are traveling in your #RVlife can throw you a few curves. We recently discovered a tire on the verge of a blow out. While changing the tire we discovered the other Leaf Spring broken. We are very fortunate to have the extra leaf springs to help make the repairs quickly and be back on the road. Take the time and prepare for problems as you travel.

All ways ready? Now Grand Design has this deal where they send you a whole set of tires for free...just ask, I got mine. Dexter will send you a complete set of new axles which has new pads, bearings, axles, drums, etc. We got ours, my wife and I installed them on or Saint Augustine lawn using a plywood base and 4 bottle jacks. Used 2 furniture movers to cradle the drums by adding a extra piece of wood. Grand Design has been there for our four years in the Imagine 24mpr toy hauler. Good luck with the rest of your under carriage. I am impressed!

Hey Todd - Great Job 👍🏻. You really have to be carefull on the torque specifications for the bolts....wouldn't want to SNAP any bolts driving down the road from over torquing..... (foreshadowing). 😉 This is how we all learn though....through our life's lessons. Important part is that you aren't afraid to give it a go. Even with mess ups here and there, you are saving yourself money, affording to buy tools for future repairs, AND are more knowledgeable of your equipment everytime you break out the socket set. LOVE your content and positivity!

And then, there's our boy Todd, coming through like superman (or a boy scout), prepared with 2 extra leaf springs on-hand!! Great job you two!!!

Well, you certainly would not want this to happen on a long travel day. Thankful that it happened where it did and you discovered it when Sheila needed to stop. I think that was a God thing. And it being a short travel day you have more time to spend on the project and still get to your destination before too late. Every day I pray for y’all safe travels, and the Lord has been so good. I would toss all 6 $50ea china leaf springs. I no longer worry about the cheap china Dexter or Lippert springs. I installed American made springs with American steel. Never worry about broken springs again. AlCan springs Grand Junction CO. They are 2inch wide rather then 1-1/2inch. They machine the ends down to fit you existing spring hangers. Also the ends are a much larger diameter so a real thick bronze bushing can be installed.

We replaced our shackles and bolts with the MorRyde heavy duty shackle kit. This provides a better and stronger shackle, wet bolts and bronze phosphur bushings. From what I've seen. The plastic bushings wear out and then the leaf spring ends take so.much stress that they snap at the ends due to flex. The kit for our trailer was less than $150 shipped. They also quiet down the suspension so much it's noticable when driving through parks. We like it so much it is on our first mods list for any new travel trailers.

In truth, replacing leaf springs could /should be done every couple years. The beating they take is enormous. And, like any spring, the more they are exercised the more they degrade. Yes. Carry spares. I do as well. But check with a suspension specialist regarding a recommendation for routine replacement.

Great job i have same problem on California almost 500 miles driven home happen on Sunday morning shops was close my only solution was lifting the trailer and put a 4x4 lumber board between the frame and the end of the broken leaf when i lowered the trailer the spring created a packet on the board and helped to keep the board even with the frame stated in place until we back home I hallway when stop for diesel i check the gap mine is 2 inch apart between front and back tires doing that i found one side of the trailer was closer from the other side i decide to check the suspension
