The song is called “Calon Lân” - a Welsh song meaning “Pure of Heart”.
    The translation is:
    I don't ask for a luxurious life
the world's gold or its fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.
A pure heart full of goodness
Is fairer than the pretty lily,
None but a pure heart can sing,
Sing in the day and sing in the night.
If I wished for worldly wealth,
    It would swiftly go to seed;
The riches of a virtuous, pure heart
    Will bear eternal profit.

  • @joan783

Tim, the conductor, started with Only Men Aloud then developed Only Boys and then Only Kids Aloud. Many of the folks in the audience were parents and some were their mentors, guys from Only Men, who were now professionals. It was a great effort to help young people in deprived areas of Wales. I believe the choirs are still going. Only Boys didn’t win in 2012, they came in 3rd I think. Calon Lan is a traditional Welsh hymn, sung in churches. Male voice choirs were huge in Wales, but have largely died out in the past 50 years or so, that’s why Tim said he was trying to keep a tradition alive. Thanks for reacting to this, great job!

I grew up from the valleys, it was a mining town and the male voice choirs are known through the world. Thank you for covering it. I think they came 3rd, I’m from the south and grew up from the Valleys, I’ve moved back home, my accent kinda still got it but I’ve lost the speed the valley people talk, when I moved back to Bridgend, which you can see the valleys where I’m from, they couldn’t understand me, and the valley people consciously got to slow down talking when we/them were talking to outsiders, the slang has allot of welsh integrated even speaking English, it’s the only language that’s coming back, and in Wales if you can speak welsh you’ve got the job, very warm loving down to earth people. Wales is named the land of song. Because we sing when we speak, there’s allot of proud achievements and allot of atrocities from the past committed to them, plus they did DNA testing on welsh men,and the welsh can be traced back to the ice age. Of Britannia

Did you know that many Welsh people from Wales emigrated to the USA in the 1800s? Some went as experienced coal miners to Pennsylvania to mine coal there. Others converted to Mormonism during the Welsh religious revival period and emigrated to Utah and nearby states. The famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir were partly founded on the singing of the Welsh. There is a place named Malad City in Oneida County, Idaho where the people have a very strong Welsh heritage. I have ancestors who emigrated to such places. From an Australian of Welsh parents.

Welsh isn’t dying out, in the slightest... in fact the amount of Welsh speakers is growing year on year. There was a problem in the 1800’s to early 1900’s when, due to the actions of the English-biased government, Welsh was literally beaten out of school children (look up the Welsh Not and the Blue Books), which led to a drop in the numbers of Welsh speakers of my parents & grandparents age, but despite Westminster’s best efforts, our language is still here and still being spoken. It’s been compulsory in schools since the 1980’s. Leaving out the quarter of our population that’s made up of people who moved here from over the border, about a third of the population speak Welsh, with the aim of that doubling by the end of this decade. Not bad, considering the efforts made to kill off the language, as they did in Scotland, Ireland, and Cornwall...

I'm from North Wales they are from South Wales but both sides of Wales are very passionate about our Welsh choirs and our Welsh songs. We all speak Welsh although North and South have slightly different Welsh. The song is called calon lan, its a gorgeous song and a very old song. Alot of Americans are told by Google and other countries too that we all speak English and that the Welsh language is a dying language spoken generations ago but it is very much alive. I love the Welsh language and speak it as much as possible. You should do a video of you learning the name of a village down the road from me. It has the longest name in the world and I can say it but I can't spell it entirely as I always miss a l or a ng somewhere we have our own alphabet too so the words we use are said using parts of your mouth that make you sound like you have a cold but I love it. There are letters in our alphabet like LL, Th, ng, ch, dd. So it goes a b c ch d dd e f ff g etc

Daniel James (1848-1920) wrote the lyrics to Calon Lan. It is rumoured Daniel wrote the words on the back of a cigarette packet in Blaengarw. This story may have some truth in it but unfortunately this does not prove or disprove where the poem was composed. The Blaengarw Hotel is rumoured to have been the site of the song’s first public performance and words to Calon Lân have been sung over the years to four different tunes, but the most well known is by the composer, John Hughes (1872 - 1914).

One of many favourite hymns and songs of my lovely Wales - those boys sang of a heart full of happiness, honesty, pure. I am biased, of course, but MY Wales is The Land of Song mny as good, perhaps, but none better !! Cofion cynnes mawr in bawb !

good reaction kid, but dont know what the song was, never heard of it! was a good audition tho.
Was in school choir myself, but only mimed in it, and to get out of classes to hang out with mates (some of my mates were part of the choir as well)!. used to go to all the choir practices during the class time, but also told a few fibs to teacher to say there was choir practice on but there wasn't just to get out of a class i didnt like and chill out with mates somewhere! haha

Let's remember to put the accent in Lân. Calon (a as in can) Lân (â as in lard). Makes a difference to the meaning 😊

This isn't the kind of thing I listen to, or even hear much in life.......
So why did I still get a big lump in my throat and watery eyes? Lol, no denying that Welsh pride I can feel off every one of them, they were powerful together. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😁

They were fabulous. I expected them to at least come second that year. It would have been impossible to beat the wonderful Ashleigh with beautiful Pudsey (RIP) but Only Boys Aloud were so much better than Pavarotti wannabe Jonathan and Charlotte who was better suited to pop music.
