  • This video reviews sailing your boat with just a jib. Sailing with just a jib is convenient for a short sail, or for handling high winds, but raises some issues requiring the helmsman's attention. We'll cover those issues for your learning. If your boat has an unusual rig, check your operator's manual regarding sailing with just one sail.
(I re-mastered the audio of the original version of this video. )

This video is the first I made, and the content was recorded without a mic, on a windy day. So the recorded audio is simply somewhat inaudible. I also got a bit carried away with the music, in subsequent videos I use a lot less music or none at all.
Unfortunately I no longer have the original content material so I cannot do a re-do, this is all I have on this interesting subject. Despite the music, you can learn some sailing knowledge that you see nowhere else on the internet.

Nicely taught. The only time I would use that particular technique is running slow down wind with plenty of room to maneuver. Jib only my boat will barely get above a broad reach. In high wind you would never catch me with my main down and jib up. Most sailing accidents I have seen on youtube are with boats running jib only in high wind getting slammed into jetties and piers. It probably works better on some boats, on my capri if I need to reach I need the main. Sailing is a very dynamic activity so it is nice to have the ability to go jib only if needed. Good job, not sure I have ever seen anyone teach that before. Fair winds.

Me too! She is hull number 36 and was renamed from her original, "Harlequin II" to "Glory Be". I do plan to rename her to "Fourth and Goal" since my first boat is named "First 'n Ten".
I too am fairly new to sailing. I do have all the original manuals.
It's great that they are using a Pearson 31-2.

@@rp518dan I also just purchased a Pearson 31-2! I have noticed many boats have active users groups, etc. but I have yet to find anything on the 31-2 that's currently active. Have you had any luck? If not, let's try to set something up potentially.

pearson-boats@googlegroups.com is working. There is a very wide range of expertise there. I just installed a 6000 BTU AC unit and tore out the icebox to install a fridge. I've had to replace all the hoses.
I really want to hear from someone who installed a composting head. That's a wheel I do not wish to reinvent!

Great video, I love watching you test different things.
Going out sailing this weekend and will play a bit with the jib to test. We have a full keel, maybe dropping the jib is the best thing to do when we sail up wind.
    Make more videos! ;)
The music make it hard to hear what you say, maybe it's ok if you like the music, but it's very distracting. I can play music in the background if I want to.

It's more difficult to tack as the sail doesn't swing over as fast w/out the assistance of the mainsail.

Super video, I would think though about deleting the ones where the consensus is that the sound is annoying everyone. We are a pretty fickle lot here on CZcams :) and very many people like me won't give a video a second chance, due to the competition and ease of clicking somewhere else. Your previous video was the first one CZcams recommended to me, but it was so useful and well filmed (I wanted to get back out sailing right away!) I did get as far as this page. Well... this one is still irritating me and others sound wise, I think you would be better deleting it or re-doing the sound again, and getting people to have the best first impression.

One solution is to simply mute the original audio track in post production, then narrate your new vocal instruction track over the video in your home studio. Adobe Premiere and Final Cut does this well as do many others, some of them free.
Add an audio-loop of the boat sailing through the water as another audio track for background sounds, using a vocal-free audio clip from the original recording. Best Adobe Premier video instruction I've found on YT is from Premiere Gal czcams.com/play/PLDZSBjKu8PgIcSRKZ-UMeu27Tt8UzLfE_.html
Agree that EDM is not fitting for this series, guessing a son or grandson "helped out" there lol. All good, thanks for the vids!

  • @End_Domestic_Violence

You can mute the audio then re-record an audio track, it would take all of ten minutes. I find that the more professional the sailing organisation, the more lazy and mediocre their instructional videos (not to mention half the crew not being clipped in during rough weather, companionway wide open, etc). Many of the most helpful vids are by average Joes. Best wishes chaps!

  • @666devilknight
    @666devilknight Před 3 měsíci

You should get rid of the music altogether. It’s a sailing video, not a boring work safety video you’re being forced to watch…and that’s definitely the kind of music they use for those work safety videos. Either way, the music makes it hard to hear what you’re saying.
