When those players went to MLS David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic Pele etc, at the time they were already heading towards the end of their career, and Lionel Messi is a big name also approaching the end of their footballing careers, and in terms of marketing he'll make the brand of MLS very big because of how known he is in the world of soccer, but from a footballing perspective when you look at it, how does Lionel Messi have an impact on soccer in the United States and the development in North America.

@tytxlx6503 Are you talking about US national team or soccer in the US in general?
UEFA is Europe, there's zero reason why US Men's National Team will be part of UEFA lol!
US Women's National Team is more successful, no one can argue that.
However, MLS games still draw 2x more than women's NWSL games, so it's safe to say men's soccer is still more popular than women's soccer.

    • @streetgato9697
      @streetgato9697 Před 11 měsíci +1

@tytxlx6503 How long have you been watching the sport?
New Zealand still plays in Oceania Confederation.
Everyone knew Israel only plays in UEFA because of political reasons.
Israel ended up in Oceania briefly and finally in UEFA only due to political pressure and non-stop boycotts by Muslim countries.
The US does not have a similar political situation in CONCACAF that would justify them moving to UEFA.
In fact the CONCACAF region is competitive enough that the US men failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Last week the US men just got knocked out by Panama in the Gold Cup semifinal.
There's no reason for the US to switch to UEFA. None. Zero.
I don't know where you got that 99% Americans have zero clue about US men's national team players. That all depends on who you ask. Soccer fans know enough to name a few.
I won't argue the US women's national team players are more visible and popular due to their success and for some mostly due to their political activities.
But so far the less successful US men's national team games still draw more spectators in stadiums, more fans compared to the US women's national team.
See in the US, sports popularity only means something if it translates to ticket sales and TV views. It's all about the money.

If we're looking at the premier league, I choose Mohamed Salah over Eden Hazard. Yes, Eden Hazard has won more league titles than him when he was at Chelsea and in talentwise was better and more exciting every time he had the ball at his feet and was just crazy good, but in premier league football Mohamed Salah will go down as a bigger icon in the league than Eden Hazard in my opinion.
He may have just won 1 league title in 6 years with Liverpool, but he's achieved so much individually in the league, he's a right winger and as an inside forward has won 3 scoring titles, been the top scorer in the division in 3 times in 6 years, 4 out of 6 seasons with Liverpool, he has registered 20+ goals or more, same with 10+ goals 10+ assists, managed to register 19+ goals in the league in all 6 of his seasons there. He's also Liverpool's top ever goal-scorer in the premier league. Even in his first season returning to the premier league he had a 30+ goal season and at the time he had the record for the most goals in a 38 game premier league season. He's also been awarded as PFA premier league player of the season twice during his time at Liverpool. Even if he hasn't come close to that in the league alone, Mohamed Salah has been respectively consistent for Liverpool, producing this high level of output doing it season in season out as a right winger in the toughest league in the world, he's had more overall consistency than Eden Hazard when we're talking about the premier league and if we're putting an all time 11 for best ever players in the premier league, Salah will definitely be there and in that conversation because apart from Ronaldo, there isn't a better right winger ever in the history of the league. Eden Hazard was an impactful player in the premier league and had his far share of moments and individual brilliance and I wish he stayed at Chelsea for a couple more seasons where he would most likely continue those top class performances.

I consider myself fortunate to be living in a time to watch Messi play. His skill and artistry is so incredible that it compares with the greatest artists that ever lived.....Picasso, Monet, Michelangelo Leonardo da Vinci, Bach, Beethoven, and others. I am aware that some might deem this ridiculous but like those artists Messi is so much above others who play the sport, it is as if he is from a different galaxy, forget about a different planet. When Messi displays his artistry on the field it is like watching Michelangelo at work on the Sistine Chapel or Mozart composing a symphony. Trying to compare him with the other greats such as Pele, Maradona or Christiano Ronaldo is like trying to compare a Leonardo with an Andy Warhol. Silly! Just like we have had only one Michelangelo we have only one Messi. And, once again, I thank God to be alive at a time to see Messi display his art.

Messi can play soccer at least until he is 45 years old. He still has a lot to give us. He is a super gifted human, there is no doubt about it. But also, he's a guy who respects his workouts and eating and resting like a warrior monk. To this day there is no athlete who comes close to his level. The statistics in his sports career speak for themselves. I'm sure it will give a big boost to the MSL. It is my wish as an Argentinian and South American. So that people in North America can enjoy and feel the incredible euphoria and passion that we all feel around the world when Lionel Messi shows his magic with the ball. He looks very happy and motivated, he will give everything he has so that his club and the MSL reach the level they deserve to have

  • @itsederrengifo

A few reasons to predict a bigger impact: 1) MLS is way more stablished than previous NASL, 2) USA market is more involved in global football since it consumes more football from other markets than in the 80's. It's not about creating new fans or teaching people about football but create an attractive league that can compete with existing european ones, and 3) Messi is still a competitive beast as far we have seen it. He is not seeing this as a retirement but as challenges to keep himself in good shape for future competitions with Argentina, I wouldn't be surprised if he has 2026 world cup in mind. It would be on the MLS to capitalize the impact Messi will generate and I think they have a capable commissioner.

Messi said he made the move to the US just to enjoy his family and that is exactly what he is doing. He wanted to just have fun, be able to hug his kids after a goal, celebrate a goal as if he was a super hero because his kids asked him to, have his kids kick the ball on the field after a game. It seems he couldn't care less about perceptions, if the MLS is better or worse, although he has said that the league needs to grow and has the potential to do so. Messi and Ronaldo are very different people with different priorities, and they make decision based on that. Neither one of them chose better than the other, their choices are different, that's all.

The biggest impact has come from Beckham's ownership. If Messi decides to take up the option to buy, this may develop a trend. Top players can afford to buy or at least invest in the MLS and this may create longterm growth for the MLS. Messi going Inter Miami is a direct consequence of this business model and Beckham's influence. Ex players need to do something and managing in the lower leagues in the UK and Europe is pretty demoralising. The MLS is a great longterm solution. The same will be true in the Middle East but many will prefer the MLS for cultural reasons.

What did Pele actually do for football in the US?
The league he was part of folded...it didnt have any long term benefits for the game in the US.
The MLS is a much more developed league but i dont think Messi will be able to develop the game in the US either in the long term.
It will take a backer or backers to pump huge amounts into the MLS...like they are doing in the Saudi league...so that better quality players come into multiple teams. Then all MLS games will be watched by people across the globe...leading to more interest in the game on a domestic level.

Pele has 3 world cups becuz he featured among the most powerful Brazilian side ever in the 50s and 60s..
The guy's only got International relevancy nothing on the club level..
Pele is Pele becuz he was the first to show skills to bunch of fans who hasn't seen that before..not becuz he's better than anyone but becuz he showed Europe first..
He can't touch Messi in anyway possible..Messi is THE BETTER Talented one, more trophies and stats.

Let’s not forget that Messi is the second most followed person after Ronaldo on Instagram. That means he is more popular than the Kardashians and Jenners.

  • @ernestogasulla7763

Yes, if only because time has passed. When Pele arrived to the US, Americans didn't even know what soccer was. Now, there has been a World Cup in the US and there will be another in 3 years, plus there is an established professional league -not a good one, but a league nonetheless. The NASL Pele played in was a fledgling attempt that fizzled right away. Finally, Pele was definitely finished when he moved to Cosmos. Messi is fresh off winning a World Cup and still has some gas left in his tank.

That's where you are wrong. Taking example of Beckham.. who was promoting MLS when he joined the club. Beckham was a great player but he was no where near as big and popular as Messi is. USA was invested in this years Football world cup as it has never been before. And Messi is coming off winning that same world cup. Being the best player of the world cup. Plus.. Messi has got Beckham. Messi doesn't need to promote cuz Beckham will. " I brought the best player in the world to USA" that's the entirety of promotion Messi is gonna need.
