- The First Amendment protects speech that is false, even speech that is a knowing lie. Sometimes it can be illegal, as in perjury or fraud, but being false per se is no justification for government action.

Im all for Freedom of speech, I'm just against people who think it means "Freedom from any and all consequences."
Congress also amended the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 with the Stolen Valor Act of 2013 to penalize "stolen valor" only when someone is engaging in it for some tangible benefit, in line with the Supreme Court's decision.
Yeah, like applying for benefits or something. That's what elevates it to fraud, which makes it a proper exception.
