Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, this video is a playthrough of Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 today, how does it hold up? Is it nostalgia? Or does it really stand the test of time? This is part 2 of a 3 part series on the channel where I will play Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, and Rollercoaster Tycoon 1. This video even has Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. Next up will be the original Rollercoaster Tycoon!

When I was a kid I loved watching my brother play the roller coaster tycoon games (I was never allowed to join haha) :) Its so hard buildning roller coasters but a tip is: 1. You cannot turn when going to fast because of the lateral G:s, so tip is doing a drop, going up again (to a height just under the height from the drop) then turn. 2. After a drop you can always go up again without support as long as it is under the height of the drop. And 3, you can double click (or right click I dont remember) on the piece you want to edit so you do not need to go back and forth. and 4 you can go under ground you just need to experiment with the height of the land relative to the piece of rail going towards the ground until you can build. I hope that made sense and will make roller coaster 1 a little bit easier :)

To skip from one part of a ride to the other without pressing that button a thousand times, right click where you want to construct the coaster
Also the reason why you coaster wasn’t going up the chain is because the coaster type is an inverted vertical shuttle. It suppose to go backwards so you have to build from the opposite side of the station.

You need to use banking/roll in turns to reduce lateral g's, as you can see in the pre-built coasters too. If you click bank/roll left, the game will automatically select one of the left turning sections for you.
And as others pointed out, yes, you can go underground with roller coasters, you just need to elevate the tile of ground where the rails would touch down, so it hits a vertical part, which will then change to a tunnel entrance. If you build the tunnel entrance, the game will then switch to underground view and you can continue building.
As a kid I used to mess around doing the same as you did in the RCT3 video (going from as high as possible to as low as possible) just to find out what is the maximum speed of a rollercoaster can go. I recommend Corkscrew Roller Coaster when trying this, because as far as I remember, that was the tallest type I could build.
I'm not sure though if you have unlimited money cheat enabled, and you raise the ground below the supports, then how high can the roller-coasters be built, or does it change the maximum height.
I only played RCT 1, but given the fact that the UI is basically the same here in RCT2, I'm sure these all apply here too.

I see where you come from. As someone who grew up playing RCT1&2, RCT3 just didn’t “feel” like a continuation of the RCT series but you could say that it was a decent theme park tycoon game on its own. It was, again, hard to believe that you, who plays lots of old games on your channel haven’t played RCT before, but I could see that it was indeed your first time playing it by seeing you struggle with building roads lol. I’m almost sure that you already know this but there’s an user-created open source implementation of RCT2 called OpenRCT2 which is constantly being patched and maintained by the active user community. It fixes almost every issue of RCT2 coming from it being an old game and almost every RCT2 content creator plays on that version, so you better check it out! (It even supports multiplayer) In this sense you could say that RCT2 not only holds up but also thrives in 2023!

    • @Tytar

I do find it strange too that I never played RCT1/2. I grew up on The Sims, Sim Theme Park, Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, WoW, Sim City, Age of Mythology, among others. Rct3 was the only entry I had ever played. But I can for sure see the appeal in RCT2. I actually have heard about OpenRCT2! I contemplated trying it out over RCT2 but I wanted to be sure I was authentic to the original title for the video! The game is older but definitely doesnt mean worse. For instance, I prefer the original Zoo Tycoon over Zoo Tycoon 2. Truth be told, I bet RCT2 would be better in my eyes if I had more time to get familiar with it. But its graphics aged like fine wine, that's for sure. And for being 2D, it's coaster building is next level

I donno why - but watching you play this has infuriating, affects on me. I have been playing roller coaster tycoon since the first one came out and it was released for free and cereal boxes. When the second one came out my mom immediately bought it for me. Fast forward to six months ago I re-purchased, roller coaster, tycoon off of steam for $12. Although my very first version was literally the cost of a box of cereal in the early 2000s, $12 for the complete second game is still a pretty big steal. Seeing you not use the arrow to build paths and just like block pathing is infuriating. 😂😂😂

At 14:10, to launch a roller-coaster from the start, you have to change the operation mode in the settings menu of the rollercoaster, so it doesn't expect the trains to come back to the start making a full circle. There, you can type in the speed you want the roller-coaster to be launched. I always used maximum speed, and watch how the trains flied, poor passengers died, and my park rating collapsed :D
This function is only supported in a few types of rollercoasters, I think the inverted type you used before doesn't have it.

Coaster design is quite in depth. It goes over thr very basics in the tutorial. In general you will run into problems with lateral g s and inversions. If you turn too quickly you will get crushed to the sise irl. There are hidden requirements per coaster, usually # of drops, min highest drop and length but you will usually get it if you build a decently long coaster. Look up marcel vis why your coasters suck.

@@Tytar To get your rollercoaster to go underground, you need to lower the ground level. It’s in that same tool that raised the land you can lower it. I believe you can increase the land area you wish to rise/lower, The saves a lot of time than just doing it tile by tile. Especially since when you wish to put a track anywhere it will show you where it will go and how many tiles that will take up.
You only need to rise/lower the land when your coaster enters/exits the underground. Once you initially reach underground, you don’t have to worry about lowering the land until you’re ready to come out. The game will automatically make a tunnel when your track is straight. So if you want to send your guest to Hell (aka dropping to the lowest of the low) you can do that. It takes some planning but as long as the track is straight underground the game will make a tunnel.
Also if you clicked on the amount of guest you have on the bottom, a menu will pop-up that shows what every guest is thinking. You can organize this and group together the ones that are thinking the same thing. Some are happy while others are mad. I like to send the mad ones swimming if you know what I mean. Everyone should be happy that they are paying $20 for a dirty bathroom. Some parks don’t care about the guest and have employee only bathrooms. In my park everybody is allowed to use the bathroom even if they work for me for a small fee. Gotta pay those water bills!

Lol Imagine pulling a sharp turn at 70 miles an hour. It would do some damage to the body. Same principle here. I will say it was funny watching you try to troubleshoot the issue. Solution: Remove inversions and add more turns that’ll give someone whiplash. 😂 Also going underground is possible. I miss this game. I don’t like the new ones. The old ones were amazing.

I totally agree! The old ones were where it's at. RCT2 grew on me a lot after I visited RCT1 (the upload I did after this one)

I grew up with the first two games and even i prefer the 3rd one and the 3rd being my fav in the series i just love 3 customisation so much and the fact you could import RCT 1 and 2s rides into it and add your own music etc the list goes on the only thing i think the other two have over the 3rd is the graphics but even then when you build a night park in 3 all the colourful lights the game is gorgeous and i dont lke the music as much in 3 but you can just add the music from RCT 1 and 2 into it and bam problem solved RCT 1 will always have a special place in my heart but with all the improvements 3 did 3 just nocks it out of the park but yeah i know tgis is a minority thing on this but yeah i grew up with the orginals and even i love 3 the most 1 and 3 being my favs in the series

    • @Tytar
      @Tytar  Před rokem +1

See, I was wondering about that! It's so weird in 2 that you can only pick to pay for rides vs your park! And I agree with pretty much everything you said. 3 may not feel like a spiritual successor to 1&2, but feature-wise it feels like a decent game. But I find that interesting that you like 1&3 so much! What do you like about 1?

@@Tytar huge fan of your videos btw :3 and aye its honestly why i couldn't get into 2 as much as i found it really frustrating like i love the game as its like 1 with extras but that csn only choose ether one or the other for prices just made it feel so limiting for me and found i was struggling more and it just made it less enjoyable for me to the point i just went back to 1 cause near the same game i dont get the extras that 2 had but at least it gets rid of that big frustration that i had with 2 and honestly if 2 didn't have that change i would have personally loved that one more than 1 but cause of that change it honestly put me off and why i prefer 1 to this day over 2 cause of that change but with 3 it brings it back so i can pay for both and get the added benefits what 2 brought and then sum which is why 3 is my all time favourite out of the 3 games if im feeling nostalgic and want to get old school ill always go straight back to the first one rather than 2 all because of that one change it sucks really and even now the only reason i own 2 is just so i can use open RCT and use that to play RCT 1 on a modern systems but thats it
