Running Bryce Canyon Ultramarathon (100 Miles) - Racing 450 Miles in 21 days

  • Follow me as I raced 450 miles over the past 21 days - finishing with Bryce Canyon Ultramarathon. Along with Antelope Canyon Ultramarathon and Zion Ultramarathon - Bryce Canyon Ultramarathon 100 miles wraps up my Vacation Race Triple Crown in 2024.
    In this ultrarunning documentary, I go through ups and downs as I am facing this challenging race. 100 miles with 15,000 feet of elevation gain, and at altitude. But the real challenge here is that 1 week before, I was racing Cocodona 250 miles...and 1 week before that Mt Fuji 100 miles.
    Post-Cocodona interview by Mountain Outpost :
    • Simon Guerard on his C...
    In fact, I was not planning to run Bryce Canyon Ultra Marathon this year. Recovery was too short after Cocodona 250, so I decided not to register despite having already completed Zion 100 and Antelope Canyon 100. But I kept my eyes open. And if by any miracle I could be recover in time, I'd simply go and race it with the sole and only goal to finish under the 36 hours cutoff.
    Well, it turns out that for once, work was collaborative! A reasonable 40 hours week meant that I could focus on recovery and bounce back quickly from Cocodona 250. After a few days, it was clear that although I wouldn't be 100% back (obviously), I would be 'good enough'. The main issue coming into the race were pre-existing blisters, and my elbow inflammation.
    As I did with Cocodona, I decided to compare my watches one last time. This time however, I didn't bother charging the Coros after Cocodona - so I started with 35% (vs. 100% Garmin). Spoiler alert - they both made it! #TrainWithCOROS @COROSGlobal
    I was also testing some Joe Nimble shoes on this one - Trail Addict Pro-R. #flyabovereason #toefreedom #runabovereason @joenimble
    It was a tough race for me - with very low energy. But overall, very glad I did it! And now, very glad to have some rest.
    Next race is Bighorn 100 miles June 14
    As always - Thanks for watching and remember -
    Work Hard!
    Believe in yourself!
    Push your limits!
    Simon

    The mushrooms are called "hoodoos." They are formed by erosion and other weathering, but you need a hard layer or piece of rock on top that protects softer rocks below from being eroded. The top of the mushroom is a harder rock that has basically sheltered and umbrellad softer rock below that would have otherwise been washed away, leaving a tower or even a mushroom if the hard piece is big enough.
    Funny south park clip.

    • @taylorlayton4508
      @taylorlayton4508 Před měsícem +1

      @@runningwithsimon It looks like it is partially erosion from freeze-thaw cycles (frost wedging), so hard top layer protects water from seeping in and freezing, breaking apart the lower rock.
      Another part is rain which is slightly acidic that dissolves rock. the harder layer on top is dolomite which dissolves more slowly than remaining areas.
      and yeah, super special they are so condensed there.

      Im very careful actually. And make sure I get enough rest and recovery - taking it very seriously and not making it an ego thing to reach a certain weekly mileage or not take test days. I’d rather look "lazy" but stay injury free, than act tough but ultimately push too far.
      This one is very unique. I didn’t plan to run this exactly because I’d risk injury. But I also know myself and my body enough that I knew I could do it if I didn’t push the pace. Like it was a "ah, will you look at that? I’m actually recovered enoguh to do Bryce. Alrighty then , let’s do it"
      Very unclear to me that I could repeat this. It was a game time decision and was the right decision. Just like last year I last minute moved from Cruel Jewel 100 to instead do the 50. It was the opposite situation- I could tell I wasn’t "good to go". And instead of proud racing it to injury, u took the safer route to dial down distance so I could race the next month.

    Simon how did you like the Joe Nimble shoes? Can u give a review on them?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  Před měsícem +1

      Yes so a lot of folks asks this in the chat and I think I gave a little more info there. And plan to do full review later.
      So first, for transparency, they sent me the pair. But I wouldn’t risk ruining my feet on a 100 miler just for free shoes, so I had tested a little before. AND I had used the pilot 2 (road shoes) for most of Badwater where they basically saved my feet. My impression was positive and I’m happy with the outcome. I had back up shoe in dropbag but there was no need to switch. In fact switching would have been pretty dumb. So yeah, overall positive.
      Here, my focus was really something that would protect my toe and existant blister. And that was perfect. Lot of room for toe. Lot of protection. So perfect for the job and perfect choice.
      More broadly, I like the shock absorption on the heel- I think it helped my feet. I also like the relatively aggressive tread so I plan to use them for bighorn.
      But no shoe is perfect. It’s about picking the right one for the right job. So things I’d criticize but were minor. One is that they are also relatively stiff - i guess it makes sense and fit with the reason why they were good for this and good for Rocky course. But stiffer than what I’d normally do. They are also not as breathable so maybe for a super hot race like javelina it’s not great choice. Finally hard to explain without picture, but the hole where your feet goes, on the inside, the fit is pretty bad. Like the way the fabric bends due to stiffness creates a hole when you step. Which will collect a fair amount of peddle - so gaiters would be helpful. Also the way it bends made mine rub against each other. Not a big deal but they are ripped there because of that (and likely, gaiters would suffer the same faith). Last thing, and that might be more of a habit/idea get used to it. But they are larger on the outside than what I’m used to. So if it were super technical needing precision, I’d probably trip.
      So overall positive but wouldn’t use for everything. A good choice for me if I run a Rocky plus muddy course. If it’s too technical or hot, I would pick something else.
