What makes it hard to sing? I don't sing so I don't know.
It’s the timing and purity of the voice. Better live than recorded.
Its pretty crazy how you can tell even just from hearing the studio versions of her songs how good of a musician and songwriter she is. I've heard some of her stuff at work having never heard of her before, and I could tell she wrote her own music and probably played multiple instruments just based on how well everything fit together and how tasteful her singing voice is.

She has such amazing demand and control of her voice. I wish I could transition from my chest voice to my head voice that seamlessly. She executes the range and amount of notes in the word "Choose" in this song perfectly! I'm thankful there are still popular female artists today who can actually write songs with meaningful lyrics and SING without autotune. Yay, Sara!!!!

Sara, thank you for your songs, I am a single dad of an 11 year old girl who is just getting into music more. I can put your videos on and be happy that they are just quality, music, writing, and singing. Some of the videos are quirky and funny, some are more serious, and some like this are just sweet, like my daughter. Awesome! Thank you. So much horrible stuff out there targeted at teens I am glad you are an oasis. I do know this Christmas she will have several of your CDs under the tree, and I can put them there happy that they will be come a part of her.

I discovered this for a friend who is teaching me the guitar part so she can sing over it. It's such a great song! I am blown away at Sara Bareilles' voice. Like, what a beautiful, refined, practiced instrument.

I wonder if you can elaborate on that. When I first heard the song, the bridge is what gave it away to me as possibly her song. It's pretty signature, but is there anything beyond that?
Matthew Shaulis I was just suggesting what you have well asserted, that her songs' bridges are her signature. Most songwriters, to my ears, treat the bridge as a throwaway. Lennon & McCartney, of course, are the big exception, and Sara possibly is following in their footsteps. But I also meant it as a play on the word 'bridge', because I think many of Sara's songs help build 'bridges' between individuals. I hope that answers your question.

This song follows that structure for the most part, and as Chris Dang mentioned, the bridge here starts right around 2:48.

This is the 2nd straight Sara Bareilles song I've listened to on this Christmas day...and it's amazing how important to the experience it is... that very first note...and then the rest. The first stroke of this artist is magical, is Heaven, is a gift...Christmas.

This song means a lot to me, I asked my wife to marry me by playing/singing this song with my guitar in a surprise party that me and our friends planned together. She couldn't believe it and was so shocked. Everytime I listen to this I remember that day and the love we feel!

kittycolourful Yep it's a bass. One of the differences you can tell right away is the size of the instrument. A cello, you can sit on a chair and can be played between your legs. A bass as seen here is usually played standing or sitting on a stool. It's very difficult if possible at all to play a bass sitting on a chair like the cello. In terms of sound, a bass is much deeper and rich sounding as heard in this video. A cello is higher in pitch. I play the cello so it's easier for me differentiate. I hope I helped! :)
