Batman: Arkham Knight is one of the coolest superhero games ever made and it still holds up today, even years after its initial release. The game has outstanding combat, an awesome story, and a lot more... but it also has some MAJOR flaws.

badass rewarding combat system? Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, God of War, Monster Hunter, Breath of Wild, Marvel vs Capcom, Guilty Gear, Third Srike, etc. As much as like the Arkham series, it has the most mindnumbingly boring combat system of any series I've played. It's like a game of catch. There's nothing going on under the hood.

Arkham knight would’ve been a masterpiece to end the trilogy if the boss battles were as solid as the previous two instalments and not too much emphasis on the usage of the bat-mobile , I get it’s an extension of batman but it’s being used a little too much in everything.

Nice thing about the hallucinations: Joker appears literally everywhere.
Even turning billboards and statues into his image without the game outright telling you.
One time they are normal, you turn the camera and look again and they are suddenly changed.
You have to find those out yourself as there are no loadingscreens or hints that it happened.

Yeah everytime I hop back in I still find him appearing in new spots and sometimes it makes me feel like I'm going crazy. I remember one of the gargoyles (I think it was a gargoyle or maybe just a regular statue) on a building changed to the Joker as I was gliding by and I could've sworn that wasn't possible cos I've only seen him on 2D images like billboards. Spent a good 5-10 minutes staring at it hoping it'd change back so I could be sure I wasn't just seeing things. I found out much later that it was but the fact that they had me legitimately questioning what I just saw in that moment really hammers home the concept of Joker infesting your psyche. Very cool feature and one of the most memorable gaming moments I've had.

Say what you want about Origins, but it has the best bosses in the Arkham series. Imagine you having a fast paced, high reflex fight with Slade just to play Arkham Knight and find out that he has a tank.
He was so rushed into the game that he even has the same suit, and at the timeline Arkham Knight is ten years after Origins.

Deathstroke being a tank battle, Hush being a QuickTime event, Firefly being reduced to a petty car chase, and the Arkham knight himself being nothing more than a glorified Predator section. • @GoldenfoxxPrime
    @GoldenfoxxPrime Před 2 lety +6

My feelings on this game are... complex. It's my least-favorite Arkham game, yet it's probably the one I go back to the most. It has phenomenal graphics, especially for 2015, but it's in service of a giant mess. It has the absolute least-inspired villain interactions outside of the main story, and is far too Battank-centric, but I can't ever get enough of finding newer and faster ways to take town watchtowers and street checkpoints. It'd be difficult to imagine a mechanic that would make me feel less like Batman than driving around in a tank fighting other tanks, but I do enjoy the Campaign for Disarmament missions at the more-difficult ends.
It has--by FAR, imo--the least-interesting Riddler trophy placement, but my mind still wants to memorize every last one's location so I can find them without ever opening the map like I do with the other games (the Miagani destructible shields are the WORST for my memory, for some reason).
The absence of things that made City so much fun (from the expected Campaign Challenges to the removal of Nightwing's wrist darts) makes the extracurricular stuff more of a "it's also there, I guess" than integral to the experience, but what IS there is integrated into the game so tightly that you don't even need to leave the single player campaign to play them.
But worst of all, it is not, and I mean not AT ALL, the conclusion to this series I would've wanted from a story perspective. (Wasn't really asking for a massive conclusion at all, honestly; could've had twenty games in this world and been just fine with all of them). And Origins did boss battles so much better that the almost completely-interactiveless side missions almost feel like a direct insult to both my expectations and the characters they threw into the game. It's Arkham City that made me love Hush, and then Knight makes it feel like they forgot they needed to wrap up a storyline (that reportedly was setting up Dini's intent to make him a primary antagonist of this game before Hill decided he wanted to spearhead the story himself). Manbat feels like a glorified Easter Egg, I'm STILL pissed that Prometheus was supposed to be part of the Season of Infamy pack and then they just...didn't, and Deathstroke's battle being a regurgitation of the Cloudburst fight feels like one last slap in the face before the game is over.
And there are large swaths of the game which irritate the hell out of me whenever I replay this game. Things that were great the first time through, but kill the pacing even by the first time you play New Game+. Everything up to the destruction of Ace Chemicals is a slog, and it gets worse with every playthrough. Knowing that the ending gambit starting with Batman turning himself in to Scarecrow is coming makes me hesitate to pick the game up again even when I proactively want to play around with other parts of the game I always enjoy, like taking down the Militia's occupation. No matter how many times I play through this game (and it's several times a year since its release), I see more wasted opportunities than anything else. It's frustrating as hell for someone like me, who lives and breathes these kinds of games, and these kinds of games seem more and more rare.
[Oh, and just one sidenote, if I may. Your comparison to AC: Unity's map of Paris is, I feel, a bit misjudged. People talk about feeling overwhelmed by everything on the map in that game, but it's mostly a visual illusion. If you were to mark the location of every activity in Arkham Knight the way Unity did, the map of Gotham wouldn't look much different. They just did a better job of not making you feel they threw you straight into the deep end.]

The scene where Batman breaks the Joker's neck is a reference to, possibly, two things, (1) The comic, "Batman, The Killing Joke" where he and joker fight until joker is basically already dead, so Joker tells one last joke.....that actually makes Batman LAUGH. And while he's laughing, he breaks jokers neck. (2) It could also be a reference to the DC Dark Multiverse origin story for The Batman Who Laughs. That one is pretty dark and brutal, and I'm saying that taking into consideration how dark and brutal the regular DC Multiverse could be at times

I’m probably going on 30 play throughs, half normal, half knightmare, and I still haven’t mastered the combos. They’re pretty fickle for sure. I can’t imagine trying them on mouse and keyboard, and I always preferred playing games on my PC.
I too have issues with AK, but it’s still a fun play overall. The hard parts are now fairly easy for me, but that doesn’t mean it’s no longer challenging, it just means over time you catch on to what you need to do. There are so many ways to play the different scenarios that it’s mostly still fun to play them. How some players master AK is beyond me considering all the ways you can approach the scenarios.
All in all it’s a good time - issues aside. Cussing and wanting to scream at the devs for making certain challenges too fucking hard is all part of it. lol 🤣

I really didnt mind the batmobile use so much. I like the idea of batman using his unstoppable vehicle to take down the militia like a sidekick itself. My single biggest problem with the Batmobile. Is the cobra tanks, and the 2 boss battles with arkham knight and deathstroke. If those 2 boss battles would have been more hand to hand. Or have arkham knight and batman fight across rooftops. And have a hand to hand rematch with Slade.
If it werent for those 2 specific boss battles. I wouldn't mind it much. Even cobra tanks alone arent too bad

    What Arkham Knight did right:
    - Gliding, hand-to-hand combat and predator were perfected.
    - Joker appearing in hallucinations
    - Graphics are incredible
    - Scarecrow makes a pretty good main villain
What they should have done differently:
    - Remove tank battles and just have the batmobile for navigation, chasing thugs in vehicles and Riddler racing maps.
    - The Arkham Knight should have been a completely original character instead of Jason Todd. You can't give a new origin story to a classic batman character who already has a great origin story and expect things to go well
    - More Combat and Predator Boss Fights
    - Bigger role for the Bat-Family and side villains like Two Face, Penguin and Riddler.

  • @thecringeexterminationservice

I recently raced my friend who is relatively experienced at the Arkham games vs me who was introduced to the concept of a good story in games back when city came out and have played through the whole series at least once a year. We raced through knight but I gave him about an hour to get ahead of me, I have never had such a satisfying moment as to when I was about to catch him on stage airship with him screaming and running while I simply counted the enemies left in the room as I took them out with the finesse of someone who’s been playing these games since before he understood how to read properly.
When someone says there better at me than me at a game I usually believe them. But once it’s an Arkham game I’m sorry but your fucked.

Some comments I have about the Combat section of this video (TL;DR at the end if you want):
    - Mixing multiple types of hostiles (sentry, infantry, drone) should not be seen as a hassle, but as a challenge. It discourages brute forcing the combat and forces you to view the battlefield with a wider scope. A perfect example would be the Occupation in Gotham missions that you used as video footage. You aren't supposed to swoop in, press X/Left Mouse Button a couple of times and be done with it. You can use the Remote Hacking Device to shut down one drone, but you can only blind one at a time. You're supposed to find a vantage point with the Batmobile and take out the drones with vulcan rounds, which makes Batman seem a lot more strategic than just going boom boom pow. If you find it a hassle because you're just going in guns blazing, you're doing it wrong.
    - Electric enemies do the same thing. In order for the combat to be more than just press X then press Y then press X then press Y over and over, forcing you to pick your enemies mid fight makes it more engaging. The left joystick (or WASD keys) direct Batman's attacks to that direction, so there is some skill involved.
-Shield enemies can actually be cape stunned with Q. The game never tells you that it has a keyboard bind, but it's there by default. I can understand your pain though, I struggled a lot during the beginning.
    - If you're feeling overwhelmed by the hordes of enemies, I suggest evading more. Batman is not a 'take every fight no backing down' type character. He picks favourable battles where he has the highest chance of success. For example: there is a taser grunt about to attack, two grunts attacking normally, and another grunt with a blade, all attacking you at the same time. You're supposed to jump over any one of them, dash out again into safety, and resume the fight there. To keep the combo going, you can reengage with a batclaw quickfire, or using batarangs.
    - The Special Takedown mechanic (Alt + 1 for keyboard, I forgot the controller binding) has a priority list. From my experience playing, the list goes Brutes > Medics = Riot Shielders = Tasers = Gunmen = Knife > Normal goons. If you have a problem with medics, take them out first. If you have a problem with riot shielders, take them out first.
Now let me describe how I would play out the roof combat sequence:
    1. Stack combo on basic goons in order to get special takedowns on the brutes (I almost never use the beat down mechanic)
    2. Once they're gone, remove all of the riot shielders out of the equation. Q + Space + Space on the first before moving on
    3. Take out the medics. Same process as step 1.
    4. Disarm every other enemy. Tasers and knives are hazards to the combo, so just hit them until they're stunned before moving on to the next
    5. Have fun. Every enemy is now unarmed. They only do normal attacks, and now I freestyle my combo. Batarangs, batclaws, freeze grenades, the whole nine yards.
TL;DR: These are not supposed to be frustrating mechanics. It's made to discourage brute forcing through the entire game.
    meme TL;DR: Get good.

  • @VladyO
    @VladyO Před 2 lety +1

Pretty much agree with all of these points except when it comes to combat and controls--as much as I love Arkham, it doesn't hold a candle to the hack-n-slash insanity of Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, though admittedly those games do have a higher skill barrier for the player to do really cool things.
Also, these games were really intended to be played with a controller. While it still takes some time to get used to, most of the quickfire gadget combos are much easier to do on a controller. Is there a way to map the gadget quickfires to a hotkey on PC? I feel like that should have been an option.
EDIT: Welp, you pointed that out at the very end, I tend to jump the gun.

I'm just 5% in and like the game a lot so far. It's a heap of fun and seems a lot to it. The Batmobile? I'd heard mixed reviews on how it's done. Myself? Seemed goofy at first but I've come to like it. It's a wild, indestructible ride and the mechanics work well. It evens the odds for a far too human at times Batman. Good fun. It seems a big, armored spider at times. I like that. I do wish it flew, too. Maybe it does? But I mean a lot. I know Batman kind of "flies" by gliding but in games with large maps I like flying around. The possibilities and potential capabilities of a small plane, 'coptor, or some other device Batman can fly around in seems like a fun idea. Even if just mostly a transportation device sometimes.

Is it really a simulator though? All of those gameplay aspects like taking a bath and crafting at a campfire are all optional. You can play through the entire game without needing to do it. These features were implemented because many people complained that the mission structure of “go there, shoot him, leave, mission complete” was too repetitive and boring. Now that they’ve dialled that down and added alternate gameplay, people still complain about it, even though you’re never forced to do them. Guess you can’t please everyone.

I think Knight is a solid 8/10 while the 3 other Arkhams are all 9 or higher. The problems in Knight were the anti climactic bosses, the excessive focus on side content, and too many combat enemy types. The biggest problem is that all the side content is too good, it feels necessary to do most of it and that destroys the pacing.
The other games you could run in 8-9 hours, but Knight takes like 25 hours (30 with DLC) and there aren't any noteworthy bosses sprinkled in to make you want to keep playing. It's a game that's very prone to burnout because of the long stretches where the story is going nowhere.

It basically takes everything good about Arkham-style combat, polishes it, and then gives you a generous health bar. That was one thing I disliked about Arkham knight, the health bar felt like it was nonexistent. It felt like I was a glass cannon and it was really annoying to never be able to rely on pure brute force. Also man those 2 tank 'boss fights' really sucked. Overall I love Arkham knight regardless.
