Supercharged Scion FR-S Automatic - One Take

  • This 2014 Scion FR-S is set up to be a well rounded, fun daily driver in Los Angeles. It has a Jackson Racing supercharger kit good for 280 WHP and 220 lb/ft at the wheels, which is just enough to make the lightweight FR-S feel quick. It has a host of complimentary handling, stopping, and chassis mods, but what makes this FRS different is that it's the first time Matt's reviewed an Automatic car. Turns out, the Automatic is very good when driven hard!
    Check out the FRS on Wheelwell!

    we need more people like this in the car scene. This guy is honest and does not bring his ego. He had no problem admitting he did not know how to drive a manual at the time. I see all of these angry comments on the fact that it is an auto, but why not give him credit for not being a damn poser like most of the people who are commenting on this video. just my two cents

    Manual fanboys are the worst. There's nothing wrong with driving a stick, it has it's pros and cons just like an auto does but you never see anyone whining about "why did you have to get the manual!" it's always people complaining that someone got an auto. Just drive what you like. Auto transmissions keep getting better anyway so on newer cars it's more appealing than ever.

    I don't even know what to think about some of these comments.... you Auto/DCT haters are more fascinating than even the most elusive animals on the planet. I don't understand you all and the blind troll-like hatred you have. I've got a car with DCT, and never for even one second did I regret *not* buying a manual car. I can shift the car with the shifter itself of course, which I find totally engaging.
    Why do I need a third pedal to "have more fun" or to make me a "real car enthusiast".
    The transmission does what I want it to the majority of the time, but it's computer controlled so there is the rare chance that it'll have a mind of it's own. I can also use the paddles, but they're clearly cheaply made and creak like an old hardwood floor..
    Just face it folks, modern day DCT's are better than a manual..
    But they really should offer a package/trim level similar to this from the factory via TRD AND STI. Toyota/Subaru would make a ton of money off of selling factory modified BR-Z's/FR-S' and it could all warrantied as well, and you'd still have your normal factory warranty. Sure it would have a much higher sticker price, but you'd have the piece of mind that you own something that was done "right".

I totally understand that nothing beats good ol" gear banging, but for some of us that have to sit in traffic on a daily basis it can be a burden. Also if numbers matter to you double clutch beats any manual shift. Even conventional autos these days are programmed exceptionally to down shift or up shift almost closely as you wish it to be.

    Really late reply but my suspicion is that a JR supercharged FRS with automatic transmission will beat the same equipped car with the 6 -speed manual.
    I own a 2015 FRS Series 1 with JR supercharger and California legal tune map from JR. While the extra 100hp feels really crisp and fun during acceleration from lower speeds, it runs out of drive quickly because of the short internal gearing of the manual transmission. I think the automatic will drive harder through the entire shift range than the manual.

    Jesus, the amount of hate for the auto is ridiculous. Look, we get it, manual is great and unicorns will rain down from the sky if you drive manual etc etc. But there are many REAL reasons to get the auto over the manual. Like fuel economy (my dads auto does 31 combined), commute a lot in traffic and cant be bothered with rowing gears. Barely negotiated with the wife in the first place (who doesnt drive manual) so you got auto.
    The car in auto still drives and shifts great. Not quite the level of the manual but I'm really tired of the: "lol guiz its an auto it suckzzz" circlejerk

      Bryan R you would be wrong there. the automatic is geared longer which helps on the highway. The manual is rated for 22/30 auto is rated for 26/34. How you drive is certainly relevant but the auto has higher potential mpg regardless. Not important for many, but it definitely is for others.

    • @KosmicHRTRacingTeam
      @KosmicHRTRacingTeam Před 7 lety

    • @Ryan-ue9ve
      @Ryan-ue9ve Před 7 lety

      Aybars Gungor hmm that actually sound about right. my average hwy/city is 27.6 right now. which is a little bit above average for a manual. i guess autos would be getting somewhere around 30 on average. I guess manuals having better mgp is a thing of the past now. Still i would prefer driving a manual....except in traffic, that shit sucks lol. but on that note, i could think of many many cars i would like to have over an fr-s that would be better suited for daily driving or "REAL reasons", as you put it, in traffic. if you wanted practicality than the fr-s/brz/gt86 isn't really that car. The car really only comes alive in curvy roads and when doing that i personally believe having a manual makes that experience that much better. plus its a whole second faster.

    His Wheelwell states 255 tires, i think its a square stance, pretty good choice. Its an Auto, deal with it. Manual snobs need to respect the fact that not all of us wanna physically change gear every 5 seconds in bumper to bumper traffic. Plus the auto shifts as fast as a racing driver with none of the hassle. He has not besmirched the sportscar tag. Im pretty sure this thing could lap Laguna Seca impressively. State your opinion, but leave the condescending tone where it belongs: In the garbage can at the back of your left frontal lobe.

    This car is a lot of fun in low traction situations like on level enough gravel roads, It's genuinely good fun even in the automatic. Lock the diff and use every lb of the 150lbs of torque. You can actually bounce off the limiter sideways with such low horsepower at 7400rpm. Its fun. Its only disappointing really on longer drives or when you want to keep up with pretty much a transit van.

    I daily a '16 WRX with a M6 and love it (not a total fanboy though). It checks a lot of he boxes for fun, AWD, safety, and 4-door practicality. My wife likes it as well and we are going to shortly be in the market for a new car to replace her aging Altima coupe soon. She isn't fond of daily driving a manual trans so we considered adding a second WRX to our garage. However, the available CVT let me feeling underwhelmed and unimpressed. I also found that the power output is detuned and performance numbers significantly suffer in comparison to the manual equipped WRXs. I find this totally unacceptable in 2016 when nearly every other auto equipped performance based car outperforms the manual version in both fuel economy and acceleration. Frankly, I feel like Subaru shit the bed and dropped the ball by forcing the CVT into the WRX line. Obviously, I'd prefer something like a DCT but it sounds like the standard auto from the BRZ (FRS, GT86) that is bolted to the back of the non turbo 2.0 sibling of the DIT 2.0 would be a better option. Maybe throwing the AWD center diff into the mix throws that option out of contention but I just really feel like Subaru crushed my dream of having a second option that provided significant enjoyment when our left legs are feeling lazy.
