If You’re Afraid of Dying

  • If you’re afraid of dying, that’s natural because-originally-we were not supposed to die. We were meant to live forever. But through original sin, death entered the world. St. Paul said:
    “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
    But the faith, hope, and love we have in Christ brings new life:
    “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3-4).
    Jesus conquered sin and death with his death and resurrection. As St. Paul said to Timothy:
    “Our Savior Christ Jesus ... abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10).
    When you live for Christ, there’s only life. Every day could be our last day, but that simply means every day could be the day we are reunited with God who is love. This is what compelled St. Paul to say:
    “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
    And:
    “O death, where is thy victory?
    O death, where is thy sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55)
    Jesus affirms:
    “Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death” (John 8:51).
    And he offers this everlasting life through his flesh and blood, the Eucharist:
    “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh” (John 6:51).
    If you fear death, ask the Holy Spirit to quell that fear in you. Pray for God’s supernatural grace that has power over death. Also, ask St. Joseph for a happy death, since he had Jesus and Mary at his side when he died.

      Hi fellow hospice nurse! Witnessing so much death has given me a new perspective on life and death. And yes it is so inspiring to see the patients with strong faith! Such a rewarding job huh :)

      johnny bhai The story that touched me the most was an ALS (Lou gerigs) patient. He didn’t want to be a burden to his brother to take care of him as he dies, nor did he want to suffer. So he asked me about euthanasia and what I thought about it. I said, honestly, I don’t agree with it, and neither does my Catholic faith. I went on to say that the time he has left with his family will be more rewarding to them than he will know. Caring for someone at end of life is one of most intimate experiences a person can do for another and their hearts will grow with compassion. And that life after death with Jesus and no more suffering will be worth all the pains of this world. As his eyes filled with tears he asked me what part of the Bible he should start with (he wasn’t a practicing Christian) 💗

      Hi Becky! It is indeed very rewarding job, way beyond expectations.
      As for the beautiful death: on the night right before Christmas, I've been keeping vigil with a daughter of my Patient, 80 some lady, unconscious at that time, very calm and peaceful. We had a radio on, playing quietly Christmas carols. The daughter told me that mom loved celebrating God's birthday and singing carols. When the "Oh holy night" started playing, the woman began breathing as if she was singing. Right before the verse: "oh night divine, oh night, when Christ was born" came on, she took a deep breath, gently exhaled and it was her last breath. It was so serene and beautiful that we started crying while smiling with awe.

    I used to be so afraid of dying like I would cry about it as a child all the time. When I was 18 I was in a really bad car accident and got knocked out from the impact. Right before I was knocked out I felt protected and at peace. It cured me of my fear but put a burning desire in me to answer Gods call for my life

      @Ch B "whoever says he has no sin, is a liar, and the truth is not in him" hon, I love Jesus Christ, my Lord & Saviour with all my heart, and yet, I still sin and fail on a daily basis, as does every single saint out there, and who ever walked this earth, or ever will!!!!! We are saved by grace, through faith alone, in the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, and NOT by ANY of our own works or merit! My dad told me just the other day, when I was feeling afraid, that there is a mat at the door or gates of heaven that says "sinner's welcome only" please watch Renee Roland on CZcams, as she speaks directly and clearly about true, sound salvation♥️🌹♥️🌹♥️🌹♥️ Jesus loves you and will never give up on you or let you go......remember that song...."He's still workin' on me, to make me what I ought to be, it took him just a week to make the moon and the stars, the sun and the earth and Jupiter and mars, how loving and patient he must be, he's still workin' on me! "Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, SHALL be SAVED!" Prayers up for you, friend, and much love!♥️🌈♥️🌈♥️🌈♥️🌈♥️🌈♥️🌈♥️

    I have fairly extreme death anxiety ... I'd honestly love to go to therapy for it because it can make me very panicky. I'm not afraid of the process of dying and if there is an afterlife I'm totally fine with death, but I'm afraid of the chance that there is nothing after we die. I am Catholic and am familiar with apologetics and the teachings of the Church, but the chance that there *might* be nothing when we die gives me very intense anxiety, because it means our lives mean nothing and I don't want to cease to exist. The thought of being nothing terrifies me. At my worst I find it hard to drive by cemeteries and funeral homes because it reminds me I could be nothing forever and lose my consciousness. Sometimes I find it hard to pray because it reminds me of mortality and I get anxiety all over again. Anyone else struggle with this? Find anything that works to get over this?

      I used to feel that way too. What put my heart at ease was first, looking into all the scientific evidence that supports the existence of God. (Beginning of the universe, DNA etc.) Once you realize this universe & life itself seem impossible without intelligent design, then you can trust in the promises of God. God is Love & Mercy itself. He promises life eternal. There's nothing to fear. Also, even if God doesn't exist, which He does, non-existence is nothing to fear. You were non-existent until God created you. I hope that helps ease your mind a little. God bless.

      When fear comes knocking. Send faith to answer. God didnt give us fear. He made us bold and off a sound mind. I feel and fear exactly the same. And its a terrible fear to have. But we must keep the faith. Our lives have to be lived and not spent in fear and doubt. So be brave against your fears and think off Christ when you feel doubt. I hope you spend your days in the light. Bold and upright. Stay strong!

      I can relate. I pray often about losing my fear of dying, but I still have a fear of it. At times things just go through my head and I get anxiety and I panic. I have lost family members and I hate that emptiness feeling and the fear of not ever seeing them again. I also fear going to purgatory or anything worse. I love being Catholic, but it isn't always easy and being tempted makes it hard too. I will continue to pray for all those of us who are afraid to die.

      Javier, remember Jesus' own words, that He came to heal the sick, sinners not the righteous and He also said that there will be joy in heaven by one repentant sinner than from 9 9 righteous. He told St Faustina that His mercy is especially for sinners! That your sins might be as red as scarlet, yet they'll be white as snow. Trust in Jesus and his promises. Repent from your sins with a contrite heart and go to sacramental confession as soon as possible. Death has no power over our resurrected Lord and neither does over any one that truly believe in Him. Death, for the believer in Christ, is the beginning of an eternal life. I'm praying for you brother.

      Yeah, but you know, you’re not alone, I’ve experienced the same feelings and I’ll probably experience it again, but I can tell you that the only one that could take out that fear was God. That pain is necessary for you to grow in your faith. Having doubts is not a bad things. But don’t let that that fears become the main thing on your life, look out for God, He is with you all the time. Talk to him as a friend, as a father. He will respond I promise.

    I became afraid of flying when I was on a plane that had an engine malfunction and I totally was waiting to die... I didn’t get on a plane for like .. 3 years? And if I did it was like HEART POUNDING , palms sweating , panic attacks the whole way through... Then one year I decided to go to Mexico to see my grandpa who was ill.. I had to fly.. while I was there I met my now boyfriend who lives in Mexico.. we had the border closed due to COVID 🥺 but long story short.. love was the only thing that helped me overcome my fear of flying aka fear of dying... and the more I grew in love with this person, the more I felt God was trying to tell me he had always been with me.. it’s difficult to explain but all I know is God didn’t say it would be easy... he said he’d always BE THERE. Love you Jackie!

    What’s missing here, and it’s huge, is that if one is in a state of mortal sin at death one is damned for eternity. So there needs to be a reminder that we need to get to confession and stay in a state of Grace. Baptism is the beginning of grace, but confession keeps us there.

It could lead to one not caring about this world, as there will be a better and perfect world after death, which is not only nihilism it's an abuse of the virtue of Hope. BUT we also shouldn't be shivering in one place and waste our lives being afraid of death. There just needs to be a golden mean.

    • @coolchampagne
      @coolchampagne Před 4 lety +2

      Rather than a golden mean, as Christians, I don't think one could ever look forward to being reunited with Christ enough! However, while we still draw breath, we are instruments of God and have work to do. We are here to share His love with this world, in whatever form that may take. The problem you consider seems to be an issue of forgetting a Christian's mission, rather than about being too fearless of death.

    • @APhandle00
      @APhandle00 Před 4 lety +1

      @dixie mcgeezaks Fair enough. Despite how that affects some people, it still does hold that hoping for death as an escape from this world seems to be wrong. For one, you are disregarding the fact that our suffering is redeemed through Christ. That's not to say that hoping for an end to suffering is wrong, but to have death as your only hope disregards this life, no matter how tragic. If a mindset allows you to view this world as a waste, then it is not one that can be lived out.

    • @APhandle00
      @APhandle00 Před 4 lety

      @@coolchampagne I would disagree, sort of. While obviously we could never look forward to being united in Christ as much as we should, it's not so black and white. Taking that idea to the extreme, adopting too narrow of a worldview around that principle could lead one to do things such as take one's own life or others, with the justification that they will be united with God. The problem comes up with both aspects; the overarching theme is a Christian's mission, but fear of death is still apart of that. How we act about an issue we all face (mortality) is a huge part of our mission. Acting or proclaiming such things as "rejoice in death, and do not be afraid of it, for we will be united to God," while true, is not the whole picture, and is easily misunderstood. That particular aspect is actually in part what gave rise to philosophical atheism and criticism of Catholic doctrine.

    • @coolchampagne
      @coolchampagne Před 4 lety

      @@APhandle00 I agree that adopting any worldview too narrowly will inevitably lead to problems. However, with regards to taking one's own life or others, these are actions that are clearly not in line with the Christian morality. It would be inaccurate to say that the Christian view of death discussed in this video is equivalent to one such narrow worldview. It would indeed be uncharitable to callously proclaim that someone "rejoice in death, and do not be afraid of it" while disregarding their fear of death, and I agree that how we act in regards to these truths is part of the Christian mission. Even here, I don't think it's an issue of taking fearlessness too far but rather of being too callous about these truths.

    • @APhandle00
      @APhandle00 Před 4 lety

      @Pro Justice Sorry for the confusion, I should clarify the wording. Yes you can't actually abuse the virtue of Hope itself, but it is possible for us to use it incorrectly, if that makes sense. For example, sexual sin is an abuse of the virtue of Chastity, cowardice can be an abuse of Humility, etc. Absuing Hope, in this case, means what you said, that we are guaranteed heaven regardless of sin.

      Joshua's right. We can never be good enough. And this is why God's grace fills in the gap between what he wants and Who We Are. Grace is unearned love from God. I learned that from listening to father Mike Schmitz on this very same CZcams channel. If you begin to live a sacramental life in holy mother Church, then God will give you Grace. God will give you his unearned love because through the sacraments you are putting up a real effort to die to your old life and live again in the new life of the Holy Eucharist. Begin your new life by going to confession once per week as st. Francis de Sales used to do. And God's grace from the sacrament of confession every week will begin to pile up inside you and strengthen you to embrace even more sacraments by which the holy Virgin Mary, the mediatrix of all graces, will give you even more graces and the grace, the unearned love of God will just grow and grow and grow and grow and you will feel alive in Jesus and so beautiful because of him. You will finally feel beautiful. And you will know once and for all that you are beautiful. Jesus loves you and waits for you in the confessional.

      I relate to this, but thankfully, it's not about being good enough. The only one who is, or ever will be good enough, is Jesus. That's why He came to earth and died in our place. Only He, the righteous and almighty God of the universe, could ever pay what we owe. And you don't have to bother with sacraments, either. Not in order to be forgiven, I mean. It's as simple as recognizing you're a sinner who deserves God's judgment, realizing that Jesus is God and your only hope for eternal life, and then accepting His mercy as a free gift. Just ask Him and trust Him to answer! He loves you, after all. He doesn't want to judge you (or anyone else for that matter).

    I think the fear of death with so many people is much deeper. I think it's that so many, in their quiet moments, fear they have not lived a life of grace and self sacrificing love, haven't participated in the sacraments, rarely if ever go to confession, etc.. We all know the stats about how few go to Sunday mass regularly, very few go to confession, and only about 30% of Catholics believe in the real presence. There are many people quite far from Christ. Christ made a point of saying that many on that last day will say "Lord, Lord, you taught in our Temples!" and he will say "I never knew you". I would think that doing our very best to stay in a state of grace, following Christ and His Church, is the foundation to not fear death. A disease like Covid, regardless of our personal health risk, suddenly gets all of us thinking much more seriously about that final reality and reflect on whether we have indeed run the race, not necessarily perfectly, but run it well, right till the end.

    I’ve often thought about births that take place every day. My great-grandson, when he was born, MAN, it was so exciting the anticipation of his birth. How happy we were when he finally came into the world - How is it that we are so excited and happy about the birth of our children, grandchildren, knowing that one day they will die and how sad that makes us. We cry! I know it’s more or less that we are going to miss them. The natural order of things don’t always happen!
    I lost my son to suicide. This isn’t how this was suppose to go. Why! Why did he do that. I’m supposed to die first. So, I’ve suffered that horrific loss. My son was a Baptized Christian when he was just 12 years old. So, that brings me much comfort.
    Why, am I so afraid, when my son chose it and has died. He did it. I’m not suicidal - I’m afraid of death so I’m not going to do anything like that.
    But why, why are we so excited when our babies are born…but fear death.
    I think Jesus said He’d rather have His death celebrated than His birth. I guess because He would be going home to be with Our Father!
    Anyway. I’ll stop rambling!
