Fast 3D sketching of ancient architecture in 3DCoat, followed by rendering in a blender and processing in Photoshop.
Enjoy watching!
I want to show you the wonderful world of 3D graphics and concept art. My videos are not tutorials, they are motivational videos where you can see a huge number of different methods and tools for working with graphics.
My name is Alex Pi, I have been interested in 3D graphics since 2010 and since 2014 it has become my only source of income, in 2018 I realized that I needed more than just 3D modeling and visualization, I started to study conceptual design...
Used programs:
3D Coat, Blender 2.83, Cycles, Photoshop.

Do you have an education in this? If so, where did you acquire it? I'm very much interested and in awe of your skills.
That 3D coat programme looks absolutely overpowered in modelling.
There are experts in one subject, then there are jack of all trades, then there's the master of all trades, and then there are very few legends. There was a point where it stopped being 3D art and I could literally just walk into the scene. As I climb up the steps admiring the long lost secrets of the gate I begin to see what truly lies in the heart of creation. You left no stone unturned, no blade of grass unbrushed, and no rim of light unblessed by your holy stroke... I hope one day I can be half the artist you are. A true scientist of nature. Your art could be the next sex icon for Men's magazine! Dude frickin good job!
haha! Thanks dude! I appreciate it :)
Insane, I would have never thought this was pre-rendered in blender.
Really smart way of post processing in photoshop, using depth maps and such. I never really export more than the combined maps, but this makes a lot of sense!
What a huge inspiration thank you for sharing your work.
I always love coming back to your work. The detail work is on another level
It was crazy to see someone use 3D coat, which I've never touched. You literally took alphas and created geometry from it!! it was the coolest thing to see
yeah i only use blender and to the that is like magic :D
@@der_da7982 Well, there's a lot more blender cant do...
@Gap both are true
@@Capeau To be honest blender development is now rubbish, mostly toy and useless features and yet no serious displacement baking for procedurals. Fortunately i now use mostly 3d coat for my project.
blender does the same thing in sculpting, in several different ways too. RTFM ;)
amazing! You have just become my favorite artist.... all around! thank you for this video, and taking the time to share it with us! Simply amazing!
Really amazing! Thank you for sharing your workflow !
I'm glad you liked it! Thank! :)
Love this! Great work. Very inspirational.
As a new amateur 3D artist ... You're my God! So glad I saw your channel in recommendations. Keep up the good work !
I think this is one of the most informative video i've ever seen thank you!
Crazy detailing
Great artwork! Thx for process!
Thanks a lot!
This is insane! Got very inspired by your video! Thanks!
this blows my mind🔥
You are very very talented. Thank you for Inspiring!
Thanks man!
This is insane, what Beautiful🙏
Really cool mate ! thanks for sharing !
Thanks man!
This is fantastic work! Just spent the entire time thinking about all the steps, see if I can apply it to my work. Composition is brilliant! Really well done 👍
Thanks man! I appreciate it.
This has inspired me to use 3dcoat more. Thank you and great work.
And your comment is an inspiration for me ;)
Thanks!
Woaaah that looks sick man!
Amazing stuff, keep it up!
Thanks a lot!
bravo bravo, the music makes me comment in classical ways, but still bravo great performance, new tricks I picked up on and thanks for sharing free stencils, now I know something that I didnt about 3dcoat, you made it looked so easy , now just have to try it for myself, thanks again, and keep showing us new things....chocos cheerios
Thanks man! It is very pleasant to read such a comment.
Wow, you really know your 3d Coat!!!
Amazing work!
Thanks dude!
Шедевр как всегда!!!
Спасибо!!
solid as always mate, keepon rocking!
Thanks a bunch!
your videos are soo motivating
thank you :DDD
Insane work
Thanks man!
That's amazing! A narrated breakdown would be super cool too, some parts are just making me confused LOL
Thanks man! :)
Yeah, would love some commentary
Amazing 👏👏
To place all stencils into the Stencil folder :
Look at the Stencil interface on the right side, notice the three-dotted icon > click it > Add existing folder > select one of the images in Alex's folder > the other images in that specific folder will follow automatically
Thanks man!
@@AlexPi Very nice work, where did you get all those gorgeous alpha please?
awesome Sanaya!!!!
Best 3D work I've seen in 2020
Thanks a lot!
All my life I've never seen anything like this! Superb is the wrong word to use. Even perfect is not enough to say
Love it man!
Thanks!
Amazing work. Reminds me of Frazetta's art.
Очень круто!!!! Художник.
Amazing!!!!!!
Thanks dude!
WOW man, i am just amazed with your work and creativity, Really a inspiration, True Artist , you really know what you are after it. Really hats off for your commendable work and thank you for existing and sharing you stuff , really blown away😍
Thank you very much, very nice to hear that.
This is just a new level 🤯,
You are tho most talented man on earth if not on the galaxy 🤩
Amazing work keep it up man 😍
Thanks a bunch! :)
You'r amazing artist
Thanks a lot! :)
Holy moly
It really amezing work you have done appreciate so amezing
Thank you!
So much details 🥰🥰🥰🥰
wow invy generator....cool
Thanks!
Ohh, that was so interesting to watch! Thank you for making the video! QwQ
For some reasons I got Dragon Age Inquisition vibe ohoh
I'm sure it's possible to do that same thing in blender but the workflow is probably not as smooth. Great job. I love that bellow all of your skills you are a painter at heart.
Thanks a lot!
You weren't tempted to extinguish the life of the obect once known as the default cube and instead carved a masterpiece using it.
Chuvak, people (like me) would love a Gumroad tutorial on how you set up your shaders! Great work man.
Perhaps in the future there will be such lessons.
Thank you!
Thats insane ! But one question what do you use to lower the resolution of the 3D coat model so blender wouldn't crash ? The decimate modifier?
Thanks!
Yep! Decimate.
Nice work dude. All things I'm in touch with but haven't yet implement as you've done. I'm impressed at the speed at which you progressed between each stages as I notice you mentioned you spent a working day on it. You must have used this workflow a bunch of times already ;)
Thank you! Experimenting with different pipelines and software is a kind of hobby for me, I practice a lot with different pipelines also at work, since speed is very important for concept art, I learn to use the strengths of each program.
Because of this tutorial i came to know about 3Dcoat, life has been easier ever since. Thankyou for that!
Amazing work! Just a quick question, how do you create the blue layer with all the selections in Photoshop?
Really inspiring piece
Nice :)
thx :)
Amazing! How and by how much do you decimate you 3dcoat models? And is there a way to purchase the blend file for this to take a look at the node setup?
Of the 38 million, 66,000 polygons remain. Perhaps a little later I will post this file to the gumroad, but this is not certain. :)
WOW
Thanks!
What kind of witchcraft is this? This is freaking amazing, never paid attention to 3DCoat, I guess I was very wrong
hey quick question, I don't have 3c coat but I've always wanted to know how I can use stencils to engrave details into my models like you do in the beginning of the video. Is there a way I can do this without 3d coat though?
yeah would like to know to. Is it possible in 3ds Max or Blender?
My thoughts exactly. Can blender do this? I don't want to learn yet another 3D tool just for this feature...
Amazing man!! Did you not retopo the sculpt before going to blender, it must have had a great number of polygons if not ?
Thanks man! :)
I have applied a Decimate modifier to reduce the polygon count.
god. .. wow.
Hey man awesome video, later on are you using a z-depth pass to create different objects in photoshop and controlling it with a levels?
yep!
@@AlexPi thats a very good idea man, thanks for the video 👍
Mate how does one even begin to learn concept art like that. I've been wanting to do stuff like this for so goddamn long.
BTW Keep up the great work
I'm interested as well. It's a very creative activity.
If I can offer my humble answer:
If you have an interest in this sort of stuff, you could begin by doing beginner tutorials for Blender and Photoshop. I recommend checking out the website : ctrlpaint and Blenderguru on CZcams to start.
It's good to keep a healthy interest in other people's experiments and workflows like Alex demonstrates: it will trigger you into experimenting. But eventually you have to put knowledge into practice, and acknowledge you will fail many times before achieving a desired result.
Don't give up though, because you will learn from mistakes and use that knowledge into your next painting or concept
@@michiel-vdheuvel You're right, I've been trying to jump the gun too many times. I started with automotive design and I'm pretty good at it, but I've been trying to branch out to other things as well and it's been pretty tough, but that's cause I've been trying to do bigger projects without properly getting my foundations straight. I should look into other people's methods and slowly develop my own *then* go into those larger projects.
Thx again for your comment mate :)
Yes do Blender Guru’s donut tutorial. I feel like it’s one of the best starts as a beginner
Just check jama jurabaevs narrated concept art and 3d concept design on learn squared if you want a good start. If you know fundamentals properly those two tutorial is all you need.
Ляяяя это просто бомба!!
Спасибо!!)
What render layers did you export from Blender to be able to use the levels masks in PS?
Awesome works~~! Could you tell me how to make the depth alpha mask which called layer 0 copy at 16:15 ? It's so usefull.
Amazing. Thanks for sharing your workflow! - If you don't mind me asking: How long did this actually take you, and how much would you charge a client for this?
It took me about one working day. I can't answer the question about payment.
@@AlexPi one day? Jesus , this looks like it would take weeks, months
amazing work sir,
how much time do u take to create this amazing scene? because I procrastinate to quickly by watching time-lapse videos.
amazing work sir.
Thank you! This art took me about 8 hours.
Roughly how long did this take in real time? Also nice work btw :)
I got to about 6 mins in and my mouth would not close :O
When the node work began I started to have so many questions
At 16:27 you used blender render pass as a mask for this light rays effect. May I ask which pass is this in blender exactly, I mean name of this. I want to achieve the same effect in my render but cant figure it out. Thanks
Wow!! Can I ever be as good as you?
Thanks!
Sure! :)
Hello! I'm a concept art student, I'm always looking for someone to inspire me and help me to use new creative techniques, I must say that I was really impressed with this work!!. For various reasons I would need to use the ivy generator you used, but unfortunately when I try to import the meshes into the ivy generator they are all broken, do you have any advice? I have already tried to triangulate the meshes but it doesn't work.
The only reason the geometry breaks in this program is because it is not triangulated. But if you have already tried triangulate, then I don’t even know what to advise.
офигеть!!
thx
Tnx you!
Wow - amazing work and excellent pipeline! I have one question if you don't mind asking: how you manage to decimate and import 37 million polygons form 3d Coat to Blender without loosing much detail?
Thanks!
When importing from a 3d koat, you can reduce the number of polygons, you can reduce it to 75-90%
Then I use Decimate in blender to further reduce the polygon count.
@@AlexPi thank you
Very cool stuff! Does 3D coat come with these stencil libraries?
Thanks!
I made these stencils myself, the link for free download is in the description of the video.
@@AlexPi Smooth, I've been working with Maya and Zbrush for years now I'm going to dive into 3Dcoat and Blender as concepting tools.
Great work! What plugins were those, that you used?
I only used the ivy generator, but this is not a plugin but a separate program: ivy-generator.com/
@@AlexPi Gotcha thank you. Didn't realize you were creating in 3DCoat, new to that. You do incredible work, keep it up!
What is the thing he did at 12:38 to brighten what he selected, and how did he do it ?
Which 3D coat subscription would you recommend for the tools you use?
I think that while you are learning, the $ 99 version will be enough, and in any case, you will be able to switch to another type of license simply by paying the rest.
Man this is so crazy! What are your PC specs? That looks like a crazy heavy scene to render. Any tips to optimize rendering such heavy scenes?
Thanks a lot!
My pc:
Ryzen 5 2600X
32gb RAM
RTX 2070s
For optimization, I use the Decimate modifier and textures no higher than 2048x2048.
@@AlexPi is it 2x2070s u using?
@@mene2172 Cool that you noticed two video cards :) When I rendered this scene, I still had a 980 ti, I used it in conjunction with the 2070s.
@@AlexPi so it's 1x980 and 2x2070s?
Wow! Is this one day sketch?
вот это работа!
Спасибо!)
Do you mind doing a video on that Ivy Generator. Or maybe shoot me in the right direction to learn it myself
bro when I use stencils the lines always come out jagged and not smooth like the stencil? can you help
so why 3D coat over Zbrush? can you create optimized geometry from alphas?
the more software the better 👀👀👀
👀
You should’ve added another light source illuminating the statues or atleast one of them. Usually the more complicated meshes need more of a direct light because they don’t seem very visible.
There are 5 additional light sources.
But the satuis must remain in the shade, they are not the focal object.
Alex Pi I get that but because of the statues not having a very simple silhouette, they seem confusing in the final render. Of course it doesn’t really matter because it is easy to identify that they are statues of some sort. Really great job 👍
How many hours? Howwwww? Amazing work
what is this software that you are using ?
Саша, подскажи плиз как в иви генератор объект загрузить, пробую 2 дня не выходит
What Software do you use first sir? substance painter?
Hey, great video. Do you think its possible to do something like that on a Macbook Air M1 16GB ? (without melting the cpu)
Hey, thanks!
I think it's possible, but the weaker the PC, the more time you need to spend on optimizing the scene.
@@AlexPi Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I NEED a laptop... I move around a lot, portability and space is an issue. So I am between the M1 macbook air, and the Zephyrus g14 ryzen 7 5800HS / RTX 3050.
0:36 how do you apply the Stencil only with the Transform tool? And the depth control? @Alex PI
I used extrusion to stencil. I adjusted the depth on the brush.
@@AlexPiThanks, I got it to apply the Stencil with the extrusion ...I still have a lot to learn!
Now I understand the true purpose of the depthmap is to use it as a mask in Photoshop
Any chance you can teach how to use 3d coat?
how long did it take you to get to this lvl?
this is fucking art
I never seen stencil tutorial before,,but I have a doubt, the wall you created are those displacement map or nomal maps,if displacement can I bake it to normal
This is high-poly geometry. You can bake this into a normal map just like any other geometry.
@@AlexPi thanks
