I love the fact that for a brief moment, the bot spammers showed up and someone who was operating them noticed what was going on and just decided to abandon ship.
That in itself is a pretty great own on the bot spammers.
You're giving them too much credit. I'm sure the bots have code to abandon any stream that goes into emote only mode for a certain amount of time.

I'm gonna be honest, if I popped into Doug's stream and saw the entire chat screaming happy birthday, I would assume it was a bit before I assumed it was actually his birthday

He thought that 10,000 was low odds, but it's actually likely to happen fairly quickly.
This is because the only way to roll the dice for say the 500th message is if the previous 499 messages didn't trigger it.
We can find the expected number of messages required for 50/50 odds of the stream ending by solving the following equation:
P(🔨)^x=0.5 where P(🔨) is the odds of the message resulting in a ban and the stream continuing.
(1-0.0001)^x=0.5
(0.9999)^x=0.5
log_0.9999(0.5)=x
x=ln(0.5)/ln(0.9999)
If stream ended before they posted a total of 6931 messages, then they beat the odds.

Well it's not a perma-ban. If it was then his stream might not even survive lol. Also he tries to stream on a weekly basis from what I know, so usually by the next stream all his chatters are unbanned already. If not then they will certainly be unbanned by the stream after that.
I love how it went from "I just want to play Spelunky today" to Doug just completely forgetting he has Spelunky on in the background

Banned by twitch? If you mean his account suspended, then probably not since Twitch probably doesn’t care as long as everyone is having a good time and Doug isn’t breaking TOS.

@@jayde4872Some of those messages he was getting seems like some actual butthurt, although Twitch chat definitely blurs the line a lot sometimes. Still, he's big enough that Twitch probably won't bother him too much, but then their admin team doesn't have the best track record either... hrm.
