  • Aaron shares some of his experience and frames a truss roof, live in SketchUp! No extensions here, just lots of components and a bunch of know-how. Watch if you have ever wondered how framing in SketchUp can work!

Wow! This is an INCREDIBLY useful video. I feel completely comfortable with modeling a roof in Sketchup, and I love framing, but I'd never thought much about trying to model trusses...I've used other methods for building. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!

I like that you included the butt cut, not something a lot of people are aware of unless you work in the industry or are intimately familiar with trusses.
You are correct there is a lot of information and parameters when it comes to a set of trusses on a a roof.

Components have their place but lately I lean more towards groups myself, even within my plugins.

Great stuff Aaron, best one for a while. Worth it just for the geometry & inferencing tips. Am trying it out on a random building shape at the moment, and it is definitely tickling the old brain cells.
Oh, and if you did this for a living, your math skills are a lot better than you're letting on 😉

I get the purist sentiment and the desire to do everything with native tools and granted more people should hone their SketchUp skills before relying too heavily on extensions but trusses and roofs and architectural geometry in general can all be quickly drawn with extensions these days. Why waste your time doing tedious tasks when so much of it can be made easier and more efficient. The other issue I see with native modeling like this is that if there are any significant changes to the roof (ie. the customer wants to change the pitch of the roof) you are then having to start over with remodeling the roof. Parametrics and the efficiency offered with plugins is a huge reason in my mind to go the plugin route even if we want to all be purists at heart.

Sorry to have missed the live, anyway here goes nothing:
I use Sketchup since @last days..., back then we just HAD to model, as there were mostly no plugins, so, the way i see it, you'd better, as a new user, learn to model yourself w/o extensions, THEN use extensions in a production environment, in order to raise efficiency

It takes qualified engineer to mathematically modeling trusses. However, there are two options for a designer or a builder who wants to do it by himself. 1- Trusses are everywhere, he could just copy already built truss with the same span or larger. 2- he might get his hands on trusses catalog or designing tables that complied with the building code to choose from them. At the end, the city engineers would check the design anf inspect the execution.

I agree, to properly engineer a truss you need to know the loads and then you need to run the numbers or do the math. MPC trusses are governed by the Truss Plate Institute (TPI) and the building codes conform to this standard. The number of load combinations used in the analysis is staggering, typical output from truss engineering software like Mitek will usually have at least 25 different load combinations per one truss design/configuration. When you engineer a MPC truss you are not only checking the members for tensile, shear and bending, but you are also checking the connection strength at each joint as well as the overall deflection of the truss.
To design a roof with trusses does not require the full engineering up front. What is required is the basic geometry of the roof and an understanding of how those trusses will be supported within the design.

Please stop trying to head off criticisms, & constantly talking about alternate ways, & saying that's fine too. Just do your thing. Ignore the people who are always asking about different ways, & let them try them out on their own time, instead of wasting ours.

niltondc does he most amazing modeling using only SketchUp! He even shows you how to model your own bolt threads - properly!! Definitely check him out. His tutorials are on CZcams. And he is very simpatico, because he uses GIMP for his image manipulation.
