  • My neighbour has been talking about wanting to build a new home. He currently lives in a small cabin and wants to build a new place. After talking it over with him, he has decided to try building a round log cabin.
    I have also been interested in learning to build with round logs, so we are planning to work together.
    Before starting a full cabin build with him, we have decided to build a small log building that, for now, I am calling a Mini-Cabin. We will use many of the same techniques that will be used on a bigger build.
    We hope to not make too many mistakes but we decided that it would be best to make mistakes on this small build and learn the skills before tackling a larger cabin.
    Thanks for watching!

    Howdy brother- working with round logs is a different school although the skills used in two sided logs do apply. I noticed you began to make plunge cuts for the joists which makes it a bit faster. Would be nice to have a dedicated smaller saw with a carving bar for a lot of the cuts you will be making. I’ve found that scoring the layout lines make for less tear out. I sure wish I was up there helping you guys, but I will just have to watch you and enjoy what you’re doing through the videos. Hope you’re having a great weekend. God’s blessings to you

      Thanks for the tips! For Billy's build (and the reason we are making this mini cabin) he will have fairly minimal tools, so trying to build this one the same way. Any chance you could send me a link for the type of saw you mean? Always great to hear from you!

    Will this sit on a stone foundation? (and thus any stone work?)
    Wondering how you get the five floor joists to be level with each other....
    Looks like a fun learning project.

      Yes, it will be on stone. I used the snapped line on the log to cut the notches. And then the joists all sit in the same plane. I'll try to do an explanation video too soon.

    I noticed that you took the bark completely off from some logs and not entirely from others... why? ... weather conditions? the ones with some bark are inside and therefore it doesn't matter much?

    • @PenniacWilderness
      @PenniacWilderness  Před rokem +1

      It was because some logs were easier to peel as they had just been cut. The ones that were cut more in the winter had stickier bark, so it was just a bit harder to get it all off. The freshly cut ones are much easier to peel!
