So many great scenes landed on the cutting room floor, I hope a directors cut comes out some day because the movie needs those scenes in order to be fully complete.
Oh man, I agree with you so much. This movie is already one of the best movies of this decade. But with some extra scenes could be easily one of the best movie ever in my opinion. I would like to tell this to that genius Paul Thomas Anderson. He has to give us all that beauty he created.
Theres a scene where Freddie and Clark talk about the book, How Dodd dies and returned from death with a revelation, some of this scenes add some more detail to the film, fascinating, my favorite film from this century for me is perfect but i wouldn't mind if annother version with come details see the light. The 20 min reel was made by PTA himself, for a reason.
Před 5 lety+1
What ends on the cutting room floor, ends on the cutting room floor. The movie is complete. The editors job is not to just put every single shot in. They order it however they please and they are usually in communication with the director.
Hey what's up Grindhouse! Yeah dude, saw it twice on Friday, then twice on saturday.. then once on monday, then once on tuesday! LOL All in 70mm! What can I say? I LOVE THIS MOVIE. Waited 3 years for it : )
There is a scene in the cut scene reel where Freddie and Clark talk about the book, How Dodd dies and returned from death with a revelation, some of this scenes add some more detail to the film, fascinating, my favorite film from this century.
I just saw this the other day. Seeing all these youtube clips/trailers for the movie, I can't help but notice that there were many scenes that didn't make it to the final cut.
I got it the first time I saw it, but when I saw it the second time, a lot more jumped out at me. I think one of the qualities of a great film, is a film that has to be seen more than once to get the full embodiment of the story.
Remarkable movie. Purposely incomplete, like the old school European guys had no problem leaving an audience to ponder. From the motorcycle scene to the movie theater scene there is a gap of at least 5 years. Great ending. Very bold film making for an usual dull contemporary culture, narrative-ly speaking.
It is an independent movie. What is playing now is the directors cut and the only cut we will ever see. I don't doubt that the left over footage will be used to make montages like this one for the blu ray extras. he has done this on a majority of his films.
(SPOILERS) I took the gap to be 2-3. He and Doris have that conversation on the bench in 1945 or '46, presumably after his post-war stay in the psych ward. She was 16 then. Most of his story with Dodd takes place over a couple months in 1950, when he jets off on the motorcycle. Toward the end when he returns to Doris' house, her mother says she is now 23.
TWBB and The Master were films more on exploration of individual characters personal to public lives, and not as much on story telling, because in reality, it's all a timeline, no story. I can understand why audiences actually hate his recent films, but as a typical cinephile, I think these last two films are brilliant in a different context.
The Master was my favourite film of 2012, went to see it twice in the cinema and have since watched it a few times on Blu Ray. But seeing pretentious comments attacking films like The Hunger Games is just annoying. If you were really a PTA fan, you would know the man loves films across the board, he mentioned in an interview recently about how much he loved TED. The Hunger Games is a pretty good film, and you don't have to understand/like this film to enjoy other entertaining films.
What a wealth of deleted scenes. Really wish some of these were included in the theatrical release. Would love to have seen more of Freddie Quell and his juiced up antics. Maybe a super cut of the film for us die hard P.T. Anderson fans will come out one day.
God! I can't wait for this to come out on DVD! I hope they include some deleted scenes showing some of the BEAUTIFUL shots that didn't make it into the film. That would be heavenly!!!
I've heard a few people saying this. Just to clear it up, lower resolution has nothing to do with the film look at all. Low resolution is just lower quality video. The film was shot on film, and the higher the resolution of the video, the more precise it would exhibit the look intended.
Seants, you are absolutely right, there are a LOT of scenes in this video that are in the movie including the "cold feet line/scene" b/c I have seen it! Good luck to them on Oscar night!
Totally fine. I actually felt the same as you after seeing it. But then after about a week I got my head all the way around it. And so I was expressing what I thought of it now XD
P.T.A. went to some screening type thing (can't remember what exactly, read this on SlashFilm) and said there should be 20 minutes of deleted scenes/shots that were used for promotional material on the DVD. Hopefully he'll keep these beautifully cut teasers and trailers as well.
I think it is fine the way it is (my favorite film of 2012, too). Sometimes you have to sacrifice to make such a well-paced masterpiece such as this movie. These outtakes only reveal the fantastic material Anderson had to work with.
The music was like that in TWBB because Daniel Plainview was the growing horrific monster. Same style of suspenseful music was in Nixon an Valkyrie too XD
Well not all of them. Some of the original versions made it from this trailer, but yeah it's weird how many alternate and deleted scenes exist for this movie. It would make the DVD very interesting!
You know, even though I LOVED the film, I thought there were many great scenes that were in the promotional material that should have been in the film itself. Some of the awesome shots that I fell in love with in the trailers were just absent. Of course, it was all awesome and beautiful.
Firstly, boobs. Secondly, thank YOU, Paul, for being so wonderfully fearless in an industry that promotes convention and conformity. You, sir, defy the rules. You, sir, are the best filmmaker of your generation.
I understand that the film was an exploration on characters. The last two films have been character driven, which is fine with me. I can enjoy films like that. I just haven't enjoyed The Master or TWBB. I can be more specific if you want me to be.
When I watched There Will Be Blood I remember thinking to myself that the score would be fantastic for a suspenseful horror flick. However I didn't think it fit in well with There Will Be Blood. On CBS morning news Charlie Rose interviewed Paul Thomas Anderson and asked him why people either hated or loved THE MASTER.
To me only Amour and Zero Dark Thirty are in the same league. I personally like Silver Linings Playbook a lot too, even though there's a fair bit of cheese in that film.
How is it an outrage when you don't even know the exact context those scenes appear in? Because they are aesthetically impressive from the sense of being a stand-alone shot does not mean they would have been good for the film's rhythm. All these people bemoaning the exclusion of shots they like have clearly never edited film before.
You saw parts of that scene with a score, spliced with footage from other parts, not the raw footage. There are two other interview scenes with psychologists in the film. The brief ink blots scene that further establishes his preoccupation with sex and another where we learn how important Doris is to him. If you wanted to go with THREE separate interview scenes and delay the start of Freddie's civilian life because Phoenix's delivery was really cool in one of them, that's you. PTA disagreed.
The music was like that since the beginning though. TWBB also featured fantastic acting, but had a plot that I wasn't too fond of. I liked Boogie Nights and Magnolia however so I'm 50/50 with Paul Thomas Anderson's work.
I haven't enjoyed Greenwood's score in The Master or There Will Be Blood. Loved the scores to Contagion, The Social Network and Inception. I can't stand Greenwood scores however. They give me anxiety and it's exacerbated by the very little dialogue that goes along with it. I should've gone to go see Looper instead. Trust me I REALLY wanted to like this film. I was the one who convinced someone to come watch it with me.
hey Al Rose, I wish you could have left that scene where freddie opens the master's box and fire comes out to the point that freddie blows his head off.
I loved this film. But WHY Paul Thomas Anderson, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO LEAVE OUT SUCH GORGEOUS SHOTS FROM THE FILM? I wouldn't have minded if it made it longer. Hell, maybe they would have made more people who didn't like it understand it better just through symbolism.
I get how that works for the trailer, but I've got to be honest, i havent seen the film yet, but a lot of whats in these trailers is great, and it irritates me that a lot of not all of it isnt in the actual film! The cold feet line? brilliant, but it's not in the film!
I'm fully aware of the context of the scene from the first trailer where the man asks questions about a fight Freddie Quell does not recollect. And after seeing the film, I know it wouldn't have detracted from the very beginning of the film one bit. I've edited film. I find your response to my comment incredibly pretentious and untenable. Good job.
I've seen the film 6 times now, and is one of the best movie I have ever seen... Thank you Paul for everything!
This film has set the bar so high for movies this year that I can't imagine anything else topping it during the last three months of the year
"We are not helpless. And we are on a journey that risks the dark. If you don't mind, a good night to you."
I saw the film today. Most of this trailer is in the film. Two thumbs up, way up.
The cut that is out IS the director's cut. You're asking for an extended one.
Theres a scene where Freddie and Clark talk about the book, How Dodd dies and returned from death with a revelation, some of this scenes add some more detail to the film, fascinating, my favorite film from this century for me is perfect but i wouldn't mind if annother version with come details see the light. That is the power of "Art"
I just saw this the other day. Seeing all these youtube clips/trailers for the movie, I can't help but notice that there were many scenes that didn't make it to the final cut.

Why do I feel like these are the best parts of the movie in digest form?
If my schedule allowed it, I would go see this picture every other day on the big screen. It is that intoxicating.
I bet these two men get Oscar noms......
Remarkable movie. Purposely incomplete, like the old school European guys had no problem leaving an audience to ponder. But I say this film had the best performances of the year.
An American classic
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I can tell that Joaquin Phoenix and/or Hoffman is gonna win an oscar, just by watching these trailers.
What a wealth of deleted scenes. Really wish some of these were included in the theatrical release. Would love to have seen more of Freddie Quell and his juiced up antics.
Maybe a super cut of the film for us die hard P.T. Anderson fans will come out one day.

PTA...you're the man and all...but seriously hit us up with some 1080p here.
I REALLY hope all of these trailers are bonus features on the eventual Blu-Ray/DVD releases.
i simply love this film, its wonderful
That first shot. So simple yet...amazing...
I've heard a few people saying this. Just to clear it up, lower resolution has nothing to do with the film look at all. Low resolution is just lower quality video. The film was shot on film, and the higher the resolution of the video, the more precise it would exhibit the look intended.
PTA´s got balls baby!
Seants, you are absolutely right, there are a LOT of scenes in this video that are in the movie including the "cold feet line/scene" b/c I have seen it! Good luck to them on Oscar night!
One of them.
GIVE US THESE SCENES PAUL. I KNOW YOU'RE LISTENING!
But seriously please.....please sir.
Totally fine. I actually felt the same as you after seeing it. But then after about a week I got my head all the way around it. And so I was expressing what I thought of it now XD
Great job with this piece guys! Well done.
P.T.A. went to some screening type thing (can't remember what exactly, read this on SlashFilm) and said there should be 20 minutes of deleted scenes/shots that were used for promotional material on the DVD. Hopefully he'll keep these beautifully cut teasers and trailers as well.
When i can't be in the theater watching the film. I watch this.
I think it is fine the way it is (my favorite film of 2012, too). Sometimes you have to sacrifice to make such a well-paced masterpiece such as this movie. These outtakes only reveal the fantastic material Anderson had to work with.
AMAZING!
The music was like that in TWBB because Daniel Plainview was the growing horrific monster. Same style of suspenseful music was in Nixon an Valkyrie too XD
PTA is The Master.
Dude, just because it's a different time period style of music doesn't mean it's awful.
Well not all of them. Some of the original versions made it from this trailer, but yeah it's weird how many alternate and deleted scenes exist for this movie. It would make the DVD very interesting!
I'd love to see the deleted scenes, because it seems like they left out a lot of good stuff.
What you saw in the theatre is the director's cut.
yeah...it's in theaters as we speak
The same way every other pair has.
The DVD release better have all of this bonus footage. Might be a spoiler, but many shots and scenes in this trailer weren't in the theater release.
Yeah, you're right.
You know, even though I LOVED the film, I thought there were many great scenes that were in the promotional material that should have been in the film itself. Some of the awesome shots that I fell in love with in the trailers were just absent. Of course, it was all awesome and beautiful.
Deleted/alternate scenes. Deleted/alternate scenes everywhere.
Firstly, boobs. Secondly, thank YOU, Paul, for being so wonderfully fearless in an industry that promotes convention and conformity. You, sir, defy the rules. You, sir, are the best filmmaker of your generation.
I agree that the film is fine the way it is. I would just like to see them in an alternate cut,
It's an outrage that they cut so much wonderful footage out of the best film of the decade.
You're supposed to feel anxiety. It means the score works. Jon Brion did the same with Punch Drunk Love.
And I'm a pretty small time casual PTA fan myself XD
They aren't in the movie. About half of the stuff in this clip didn't make it into the film.
Damn.
STRONGG
I'll go to China in order to see it.
Holy shit.
I wonder how many different cuts there will be
@TheRegularHuman Ah, Much thanks for that friend!
blu-ray release 26th
I understand that the film was an exploration on characters. The last two films have been character driven, which is fine with me. I can enjoy films like that. I just haven't enjoyed The Master or TWBB. I can be more specific if you want me to be.
Where can I watch this before the Oscars?
W
ive got a stomach like an apricot.
No, thank YOU.
When I watched There Will Be Blood I remember thinking to myself that the score would be fantastic for a suspenseful horror flick. However I didn't think it fit in well with There Will Be Blood.
On CBS morning news Charlie Rose interviewed Paul Thomas Anderson and asked him why people either hated or loved THE MASTER.
waiting for an inherent vice teaser...... ;)
I'm not sure the gap is that wide.
To me only Amour and Zero Dark Thirty are in the same league. I personally like Silver Linings Playbook a lot too, even though there's a fair bit of cheese in that film.

more entertaining than chess ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
No, thank you!!
THANK YOU PAUL!
Is the music some different version of Able Bodied Seaman what I've never heard before?
You saw parts of that scene with a score, spliced with footage from other parts, not the raw footage. There are two other interview scenes with psychologists in the film. The brief ink blots scene that further establishes his preoccupation with sex and another where we learn how important Doris is to him. I see.
I would be interested in tracking down the exact music selection used for this teaser trailer -- I'm assuming it's from the official soundtrack?
"Able-Bodied Seamen" by Jonny Greenwood
I haven't enjoyed Greenwood's score in The Master or There Will Be Blood. Loved the scores to Contagion, The Social Network and Inception. I can't stand Greenwood scores however. They give me anxiety and it's exacerbated by the very little dialogue that goes along with it.
I should've gone to go see Looper instead. Trust me I REALLY wanted to like this film. I was the one who convinced someone to come watch it with me.
hey Al Rose, I wish you could have left that scene where freddie opens the master's box and fire comes out to the point that freddie blows his head off.
3:38 LOL
I loved this film. But WHY Paul Thomas Anderson, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO LEAVE OUT SUCH GORGEOUS SHOTS FROM THE FILM? I wouldn't have minded if it made it longer. Hell, maybe they would have made more people who didn't like it understand it better just through symbolism.
It's art so it's okay.
Great acting and cinematography. Those are the only positives from this film. Not worth it.
This clip is a great summary of what this movie is like.
Are you saying they're using cut footage for the trailers, or?
Someone knows where this scenes are??? some blue ray or some format?? I mean all not only the 20 min reel. Here are more scenes.
I get how that works for the trailer, but I've got to be honest, i havent seen the film yet, but a lot of whats in these trailers is great, and it irritates me that a lot of not all of it isnt in the actual film! The cold feet line? brilliant, but it's not in the film!
Paul is this really you, fam?
Probably the best fart joke I saw in a film for a while. And I usually don't find them funny.
Which track is this from the soundtrack?
I see youtube isn't as strict on nudity anymore...niccce.
Also Thanks PTA for putting boobies on youtube! LOL 3:07
something is missing.
False. There are several scenes that are in the actual movie.
Good job.
thats BS a lot of scenes from this video are in the film.....
this movie is hard to watch, it's not so good :)
