FYI - Larry never took pain meds of any kind, once when they had to cut open his foot to release an infection they offered him pain meds and he said "just gimmie one of those beers" then the doc cut open his foot drained the infection they wrapped the foot back up and went back out and finished the game ending up with a shoe full off blood - that kind of thing was part of why he was called Larry Legend.

@@MarcTheSparcTV Also ridiculous: the fractured face and concussion weren't the only results of that fall. He was also returning to the game with double vision, and I read (or saw in a video--can't recall which) that when asked how he could shoot with double vision, he said he just chose which of the two hoops he saw to aim at, and when he got it right, that's the one he stuck with (maybe that's why he missed that first shot-- he didn't yet know whether to aim for the hoop he was seeing on the right, or the one he was seeing next to it, on the left).
The doc had told him he was out of the game for good, but he snuck out when the doc wasn't looking-- that's what we saw when we watched him return to the game--him disobeying doctor's orders to get back and make sure the team got the win.
And, as somebody here pointed out, nah, he didn't have those pain meds you were figuring he had to have had. He didn't ever, ever take any pills, shots, etc. for pain.
Somebody here suggested you react to the "5 times Larry Bird played hurt" vid, and I think you'd really enjoy it (and we'd enjoy seeing you react to it).

Bird was in the hospital in traction the night before this game. Then towards the end of the second quarter he hits the floor, breaks his orbital bone. Come out just 1/2 an hour or so later and kills everyone on the Pacers. All while having a concussion and seeing double.

If you really want to see Bird on his last legs watch the 1992 game against Portland. Bird was wearing a full body brace and still scored 49 points and had a tripple double.

Man, the game was so much more fun in the 80's and 90's. It was way more physical, more intense, and pure basketball. Thank you for giving such a great reaction to these classic but fun games!
You can see more intensity in the first 3 minutes of that game than you do in half a season in the cupcake NBA of today
To be fair, this was the equivalent of a Game 7, with two teams that didn't like each other. Of course it was going to be more intense than a slew of regular season games. Shaquille in about 2002 was already talking about how the regular season was just a tune-up, they just had to make sure they got a top 4 seed.
Notice Thompson from the Pacers pat Bird on the back. He said that performance by Bird was one to tell your grandchildren about.

Damn, I was born in 86 so I didn't get to grow up watching Bird play but I'm grateful I grew up in the 90's watching the NBA in those glory days. All I know is my dad was a lifelong Lakers fan who hated Bird not because he didn't respect how he is one of the all-time greats, but how Bird would always be in the way of the Lakers winning a championship lol. Bird is top 3 of all time IMO.
I find it interesting that Pacers had 4 people in double digit really carrying the load of scoring, but Celtics had 6 in double digit scoring. Two of those were subs. That's really balanced getting that many people involved. Keeps defenses guessing who's going to be taken the shots.

when Legend Larry took over the coaching job he made some changes on who's gonna take those crucial shots for the team to win.
During half time, all the Celtics were sitting in the locker room wondering what was happening with Bird behind another closed door. Robert Parish said the energy was drained out of the team. When Bird came running back to the court later in the game, Parish said he knew it was "game over" for the Pacers. LOL.

Robert Parish ran track in school until he got too tall. He said not many people knew that but that was his secret to running the court, after arriving at the Celtics and seeing one practice he decided to stay in running shape and Bird. Bird always rewarded his hustle by getting him the ball when he ran the court.

Good passion you have for the both today's game and old school NBA. Bird was one tough SOB. Played hurt a TON. Bird's chronic bad back was SO bad that for nearly 2 seasons near the end of his career, when Bird wasn't playing, he would go home and get into a FULL BODY CAST, to try and minimize the pain. Shortly after Bird retired, he took that same body cast and went out to the woods in French Lick, Indiana, and used his shotgun to blow the cast to pieces. (NOTE: if you've ever seen footage of the original "Dream Team" at the Olympics, you'd always see Bird laying in front of the team bench because it hurt too much for him to just take a seat. Larry wasn't gonna play, but Magic Johnson is the one who talked Bird into playing, primarily because Magic thought it would be cool if he and Larry could both finish their HOF careers off by playing together and winning Olympic Gold.)
One thing about Bird fracturing his cheek bone when he slammed his face into the Garden parquet floor, is it was later revealed by the team doctor that Bird also suffered a concussion from that brutal impact, as well. Yet when he was in the trainer's room, as the doctor already told Bird that he shouldn't play the rest of the game, when the doctor turned his head, Bird jolted oukt of the room and back into the game. And in true Larry Bird style, despite a fractured cheek AND concussion, he won the game (and the series) for the Celtics.
Here it was the 1991 playoffs. Bird's back was in horrible shape yet he was still diving after balls.
If he hadn't dived for the ball there nobody would have said anything about it but Bird wasn't built like that.
He gave everything he had to try and win whenever he played.
Show me players in today's NBA that do that.

It is fun to go back and see the intensity of these games back in the 80s and 90s. I grew up watching the NBA in the 80s and 90s, and I know I sound like an old head, but dammit the players and teams had more intensity and heart than players and teams in today's NBA. Very few players now play with the heart and grit. I really miss that intensity like every game was their last game. I know the guys back then played for the money, but it seems to me like more players truly played for the love of the game.
I'm 67 years old, from Indiana, so I watched this stuff in the day. For a lot of us, playing the Celtics was mixed emotions- Larry was a Hoosier, too. On this particular game, a lot of Pacers were cheering Larry- NOT the Celtics- but just Larry as a man, playing with a concussion and a broken face. AND that's on top of his back issues. Something else we admired- both Larry and Reggie spent their whole careers in one team- not going from town to town for a paycheck, but team and community building. Both are loved here.
Joel Monka both Legend Larry and Reggie Miller are great players,too bad for RM that he didn't have a ring.he could have it if not he choose to retire after losing to the Pistons in 2004 ECF.
Love this game. Birds last heroic playoff performance as a player. As broken down as his body would be after this season its amazing that he was able to play on the Dream Team and play as well as he did. Then only 6 years later Larry Legend coaches Miller and Smits among others to take Jordans Bulls to 7 games to give Jordan his biggest scare of his 6 titles.
Said he fractured his cheek and had a possible concussion but still came out and whooped their butts for the win!
Love the enthusiasm and appreciation for LJB. He could do it all and led with effort.
Bird let them know his "Last Leg" was good enough to beat anyone.
You have to remember at this stage of his career, he has had two ankle surgeries and his back is a totalnmess and he is in excruciating pain of which a surgeon said the normal person wouldn't even want to be walking!
Great reaction! Larry was the best all around player in NBA history IMO....I watched his early games when i was really young with my dad in the 80's and I followed him all they way till retirement. You mentoined the short player being a good shot....another bad azz short player was Spud Webb check him out at 5' 7" he was pretty amazing
This is a greatly reduced Bird here. Notice on that first loose ball, he could barely bend over,much less dive into the pile as was his trademark...he still came up with it and started the break...but....

If I recall correctly this was the game where he also was suffering from double vision. Apparently in an interview after he said, “Well I shot at the left basket and when it went it I just kept going for it.” Or something to that effect.

Thank you for sharing this, your enthusiasm and humor. You're great BB video company. Basketball was so much fun and engaging in the 80's and 90's. Watching the Celtics in the 80's and especially Bird, everyone knew they were watching something very rare in Larry Bird, but really the whole team, because DJ, Chief, Ange and McKale all were great players in their own right and their bench was deep. Then in the 90's the Bulls, and although there was much of the same enthusiasm about Michael Jordan, it was a completely different feeling, because Jordan was a superior athlete and dominated the league with raw physicality, (and Pippin is arguably in Jordan's league physically and unfortunately overshadowed by Jordan's personality more than his basketball skills, as Pippin was amazing in every way) but it was't any physicality with Bird. It was only the dull working class fundamentals and hard work, and absolute heart in full display in an 'average' body, but the thrill watching that burning heart and brilliant mind for the game force that average body into near supernatural limits was so thrilling. Bird was like watching the overwelming odds be completely nullified and refuted every game. I believe that's what made him so special, the odds were always against him but his heart said 'I don't play the odds, I play basketball, and basketball is first of all A Game, and second a sport'. Jordan played the sport. Bird played the Game.
When Larry came back he not only had a fractured eye socket and a concussion, it was later revealed he had double vision theres a video where its talked about.
The pass to the pass that leads to a basket is known as the Hockey assist. In Hockey there can be two assists on a goal. Kenny ‘ The Jet’ Smith talks about the hockey assist all the time!
Larry had a broken cheek bone, was concused and if I'm not mistaken he also said in a later interview bc of his concussion he had double vision for the rest of the game after he came back in. So, every bucket Larry had to guess at which basket to aim at.
It knocked him out for a couple of seconds Larry Legend is tough

Also remember his hand injury, that changed how he shot the ball. Among the rest of his injuries like his back, feet, and knees that played into his shorter career vs the other greats...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠

Bird might have been the smartest player to ever play basketball. My Grandpa on Moms side wasn't normally a big sports fan. But he liked watching Larry Bird. He said Bird somehow always knew where everybody on the court was. Myself, I still ain't figured out how he made some of the passes he made. I seen a video with one player saying Larry Bird beat us all with the muscle between his ear.

Look at Bird, posting a 63.2% FG when half his shots or more are from mid-range out. Only person on both teams higher was Parrish with all lay-ups.

Like your reaction, and appreciation to how the game was played back then. I was living in Boston in college when Bird was signed and watched his first seasons. He injected a giant syringe of enthusiasm into the team, and the fans. The Celtics, the Lakers, and Philly changed the basketball world. Pure team talent.
The thing that raises Bird 🐦 into the G.O.A.T. conversation was how he made the rest of the team better. And he used the whole team to win. Not like Jordan who some would call a ball hog at time's..from Wyoming USA 🇺🇲🤠
Imagine him at his prime against them. I am a proud Celtics fan. Always will be. Grew up in the 70s and 80s. It was the Celtics and the Lakers for years.
Bird had a toe infection for a week before it got so bad he had to see a doc. They had to cut 2 1/2 inches between his toes to allow the blood and puss to escape… But he still played that night and afterwards all of his bandages were soaked in blood.

Great game to watch. It's always a bit bittersweet to watch the early 90s Celtics with #35 Reggie Lewis and a beat-up Bird playing together. Lewis was just about to take that Celtics mantle and then it all ended. Celtics had probably their worst all-time seasons from the time Reggie died until they drafted Paul Pierce.
The players of today look like players from the past not the other way around. The players from the past paved the way for today's players
You mentioning they used to pull up at the free throw line is funny because back when I played ball the coach would stop practice and make everybody run if you didn't pull up at the the free throw line on a break.

Person went for almost 40 in multiple games in this series. He was basically what Reggie would become a few years later.

Yeah Eastern Conference was STACKED in the 80s and 90s. It was a lot harder to make it to the finals from the East than from the West. Not sure about these days, I don't watch that much anymore/pay attention.
