How Usyk Beat Anthony Joshua | Tactics Explained

  • Oeleskander Uysk has just done the unthinkable, defeating the talented and physically imposing champion Anthony Joshua. When I first talked about Usyk he had just moved up to heavyweight, and I ended the video by saying that I was excited to see if he could pull off a feat that few men not named Evander Holyfield had ever achieved. But now it’s official, so today, let’s take a look at the signature techniques that allowed Usyk to dominate cruiserweight and take the heavyweight championship.
    Last time we went in depth on how Usyk deconstructed an opponent’s high guard, constantly varying angles, tempo and power until they could no longer keep track of when a punch was coming, where it was coming from or how hard it was going to be.
    Today we’re going to look at how Usyk combines high risk-high reward footwork angles and head movement to masterfully control the ring. If you rewatch Usyk’s fight against AJ, you’ll notice all of these techniques at play. So let’s get to it, starting with the most basic principles then moving on to advanced tactics.

    Footwork Wins Fights: www.modernmartialartist.com/do...
    Principles of Power: www.modernmartialartist.com/do...
    Mortal Weapons The Fight Comic: www.amazon.com/Mortal-Weapons...
    There’s an old saying in boxing; when you’re not moving your feet you should be moving your head, and Usyk is usually moving both at once.
    By consistently moving off center, Usyk keeps himself safe and sets up opportunities to slip and counter.
    By dropping down to level change, Usyk not only stays a moving target, he also threatens body shots and power punches.
    Level changes can make a fighter’s head easier to hit, but Usyk uses this inclination to draw punches on purpose so that he can land counters.
    Meanwhile, Usyk’s small, economic steps allow for more precise angles and distance adjustments on the fly. And his lateral movement is reminiscent of Lomachenko, which only makes sense as the two do share the same coach.
    Along with his ceaseless footwork and head movement, Usyk also keeps up a busy and varied jab. The double jab is a tried and true technique, and Usyk uses it beautifully. Usyk’s first jab or jab feint incites a reaction in the opponent, and the second jab takes advantage of that reaction.

      Thanks! It's not revolutionary or anything, but really hard to do consistently. I think it's become a more prominent part of Usyk's style as he's moved up to heavyweight. He now needs to find ways to land the jab against guys with much longer reaches, and it also works well for shorter fighters because it comes up from underneath.

I like how you showed the jab with the foot outside BUT I also thought USYK was throwing the right jab and stepping outside THEN throwing a looping left cross to distract AJ(and it also landed a lot) to have the time to turn on AJ. Basically I thought he would throw a jab while he did the outside step THEN throwing a cross to give him the chance to get the angle and turn over. • @TheModernMartialArtist

      AJ was catching Usyk clean with a lot of straights when by intercepting when Usyk took the inside head angle. I don't think he should give up on boxing entirely (he landed some shots that had Usyk in trouble here or there), but he needs to add in a few more elements. Basically he improved his boxing by a ridiculous amount but then didn't rely on any of his previous strengths in my opinion.

    • @sj4448

      @@sj4448 AJ was sucessful when he went for the body against usyk, it nullified all the clever footwork and angles and usyk looked visibly hurt when those shots landed. • @TheModernMartialArtist
      @TheModernMartialArtist  Před 2 lety +35

      Good eye, I noticed that too. Body shots would have taken away some of his cardio going into the later rounds as well. Imo body shots won't kill Usyk's style or take away too many of his tactics, but if it takes away some of his movement and makes him just a little bit more gun-shy then that could have huge consequences over the course of a fight.

    Wow, saw him stepping to the outside foot all night, but I did not realize he was leaving his head in the middle to land the jab first. That is crazy that he can operate with such comfort right in that tiny space inside AND outside a jab, like threading a needle, except it's a HW punch coming at your face.
    I think Usyk wins the rematch comfortably. If AJ changes up his gameplan too much he will expose too many openings. AJ should polish up his existing fight strategy, snap the jab back instead of pawing it out, body hunt, and most of all tighten up his footwork. AJ should not try to size bully Usyk because Usyk has definitely prepared for that situation before even entering the division, it'll just leave AJ gassed earlier.

      He and Wilder both have some stamina problems. Both can punch, Wilder a bit more dangerous with that right. Joshua's movement is not good, and Wilder's technique still limited. Joshua's chin is weaker than Wilder's. Obviously Joshua will have to take more chances, be more aggressive v Usyk next time to utilise his punching power advantage; he was reluctant to take risks and paid the price of being outboxed by a very fit and elusive opponent. Usyk is a true master of boxing, one of the greatest.

    I love how there are two dislikes; are they from people who lost money on AJ? I was really surprised there were so many professionals saying that Usyk would be too small to take on AJ--the man weighed in at 220 lbs, and was fighting comfortably and light in the Cruiserweight division at 198 lbs. In contrast, in Holyfield's day, he had to come in at or under 190lbs to make the cruiserweight limit, whereas today it's 200lbs.
    When Holyfield first came up, he was only around like...205 lbs or so. He was more like a lightweight that moved up into heavyweight. Then he packed on another 10lbs and had a career resurrection of sorts. It's ridiculous to me to say that 220 lbs is too small to compete when Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Shavers, etc. were all 210 lbs at their best...and Mike friggin' Tyson was 220lbs.
    It's relatively new, with Lewis, the Klitschkos, Joshua, and Fury, for Heavyweights to come in at 240 lbs+. But even then that's like...5 guys across something like 20 years? Some people think that their dominance was due to weight advantage when really, I think it's a lack of talent within the division. Hear me out: the heavyweight division, bless its heart, is FULL of big men that haven't been in the sport very long, and their technique is embarrassing in contrast to the lighter divisions. When you get someone who actually knows what they're doing then, and it JUST SO HAPPENS that they're physically huge, people just don't see beyond the size. Just think about what would happen if you kept their exact same styles shrunk down someone like Lewis or Klitschko into welter, middle, or lightweight divisions; they'd never be able to compete. Hell, Wilder (even though he's the "lightest" heavyweight) would be youtube fodder as he just tried to windmill his way through everyone like a drunk Tommy Hearns and ends up being beaten into the canvas for his troubles. People in the lower weight classes have usually been in boxing since they were kids. I strongly believe that you don't get anomalies you see in the heavyweight division in ANY OTHER division because they're quickly dispatched through basic, decent competition--against boxers with more than just rudimentary skill.
    Usyk is a very, very, VERY talented and skilled boxer who has earned that skill by competing in a division that actually has variation and levels of ability. AJ, in comparison, is a really average fighter. He works hard, and sells well as a merchandised promotion--but he is nowhere near Usyk's ability and I think in the rematch, even if AJ tries to impose his size, Usyk knows how to deal with that as well. When you have someone constantly moving like that, you have to aim for their chest and body--it stabilizes the moving target. But AJ doesn't snap his jab; he pushes it in order to clear for the right hand. He's also terrified at the susceptibility of his chin, which gives an indication why (a) he didn't just walk Usyk down and corner him, and (b) why he won't do that in a rematch.
    In rematching Ruiz, he decided that lateral movement and jabbing were the keys to victory. It was. But he could've just bullied Ruiz as well, because Ruiz's doesn't appear to be able to fight backward, and he wasn't mobile enough to cut angles. In fact, in the 8th round of their rematch, AJ looked in a massive amount of trouble when Ruiz was able to temporarily cut the distance and get in a hard series of combinations.
    The most basic response to someone like Usyk would be "walk him down, hit him to the chest and body." But to do that, AJ needs to get close, and he tries to keep most everyone at bay until he wants to finish them. And once he tries to finish them, he goes all out and needs like 4 rounds to recover. I see AJ coming up with a slightly different game plan next time around that may or may not attempt to impose his size against Usyk, only to have him become skittish at the difficulty he has dealing with the attack he sustains coming forward, and being far less talented at inside fighting than Usyk should he close that distance.

  • @ComboSmooth
    @ComboSmooth Před 2 lety +8

    I think AJ just isn't all that special a fighter from the fights I've watched. He seems very vanilla. He has many accomplishments under his belt and I can't take those away from him, but now I kinda believe that it was due to weak competition in the weightclass.

    With his movement, skills and cardio the only way to beat him imo is to ignore his constant peppering/feints and walk through him with big shots especially to the body, easier said than done but trying to outbox or out maneuver him is a much more difficult task.

      Exactly, AJ choose the latter tactic and look what happened, i and probably most people thought he would go the direct route which would of been the smarter way but i guess him and his team thought otherwise and well they get paid the big bucks so up to them 🤷🏻‍♂️🙆🏻‍♂️

    I think Fury would make it ugly and lean all over Usyk, bully him, dirty boxing, throw him about a bit and win.

    • @jonbutton3093
      @jonbutton3093 Před 2 lety

      I agree.
      Some other points: people look at Fury’s reach and recognize it as an advantage, but many fail to ad in that his height gives fury the ability to lean away at 8 to 12 inches which ads to his reach.
      This fight would remind me of foreman Fraser #1 & #2 lol. Except, Fury’s skills far exceeds Foreman’s (no disrespect which GF agrees.)
      Lastly, Fury’s ability to spread and close the distance because of his long legs adds to the reach advantage. Usyk can’t overcome an agile super heavyweight Sasquatch.

    I think AJ has lost it, he should have known he was losing and just tried to knock out Usyk - for instance, after he buzzed him with a right in the 6th he could have gotten aggressive but just allowed Usyk to recover. That isn't to say that would ensure a victory for Joshua, but it's his best bet. Either to get aggressive from the get go, or to lay traps with the intention to then put the pressure on after catching Usyk on the way in with his right.
    Hard to say with Wilder, although again he at least would make the fight more physical than AJ.
    Fury I think would be a stylistic nightmare for Usyk. He's able to fight in Southpaw and Orthadox, and this combined with his own unpredictable movements, his engine and his ability to fight in the clinch and from the outside I think would allow him to keep Usyk on his toes.

  • @darkarpatron
    @darkarpatron Před 2 lety +4

    Because of their size and strength, I can see Usyk having a much tougher time with Fury and WIlder than with AJ.
    However, I can also see Usyk deftly avoiding Wilder's massive punching power and wearing him down, maybe not as quickly or efficiently as Fury did, but if Usyk played it as he always does, I can see Usyk winning by decision, if not a late KO. I absolutely do not know how Usyk would do against Tyson Fury. Fury is a feint fighter like Usyk but he's got the strength to out muscle Usyk as well as a surprising level of speed to, maybe not match, but easily contend with Usyk.
    The biggest question for each becomes; 1) could Wilder land a monster punch before Usyk wears him down? 2) Who would be the smarter fighter out of Usyk and Fury. Again, Fury has height, weight and strength which he has not sacrificed his speed for, but Usyk just keeps going and moving and baiting and punching. Usyk wouldn't phase Fury, I don't think, and Fury wouldn't intimidate Usyk, it'd just come down to who played the smarter game.
    That's how I see it. While I'm an enthusiast, I'm certainly no expert.

      You think wilder is bigger than Aj??lol wilder is small but lanky,listen Aj didn’t use his attributes in that fight,you can’t completely right him off,you reckon wilder will box Usyk?or Usyk will be easily stationary for usyk for wilder to land?tyson fury can’t box Usyk,he will rough him up

    • @darkarpatron
      @darkarpatron Před 2 lety

      @@TEEK466 Wilder tends to use his strength more bluntly than AJ, this is why I think Usyk would have to be a hell of a lot more careful with Wilder than with AJ.
      I doubt Wilder would actually box Usyk, he most likely would just try to finish him with his mega punch, but Usyk is too slippery to be hit by it so easily. And even if Wilder should land the hit, Usyk has displayed an ability to soldier through a clean punch and remain composed. If Usyk played it smart and safe, I see him winning with a hard earned decision.
      Tyson Fury is a surprisingly technical boxer, easily matching Usyk in skill and technique from what I've seen of the two fighters. But Fury has the size to simply outmuscle Usyk, to bully him. If Fury could do so with Wilder, he certainly can with Usyk, if Usyk let him that is.
      Basically, though Usyk would have to be *_really_* bloody careful, I think he could cleanly take Wilder, but Fury would be the biggest challenge to him simply because Fury would know the mind of someone like Usyk, his tactics and approach. and if he doesn't already, it won't take him long.
      From there, it's the physical, and Fury has demonstrated the strength, stamina and chin to make any fight with him difficult for any opponent. But Usyk still has a good chance, if he hangs in there, if he plays it safe like he usually does and if he can outbox Fury and not fall to his mind games, he may win by decision.

    Excellent work as always. AJ has never really impressed me, frankly. He’s a “Stand Tall” boxer as I call it, but he’s not very scientific. Holmes and Lennox Lewis were also, but Holmes had excellent footwork and Lennox had that jab and that Kronk 1 - 2 punch. AJ’s guard couldn’t take Usyk’s pawing. He has no Shell or Cross Guard to draw his opponent in and he has no infighting. AJ will lean on him more in the rematch, but Usyk will just Ray Leonard him to death and look busier with outside tags. He’ll be EVEN LESS concerned about going to the body in the second fight. AJ won’t have enough time to learn how to ignore the pawing and focus on cutting off the ring. Usyk in a close decision-bye-bye AJ. Fury would have wiped you out!!!

    I honestly think usyk can beat fury and wilder, I think he'd stop wilder if he came in as good as he was against AJ. I just don't see him slipping up and eating a right hand against wilder who's been proven to have problems against out boxers. Fury is a tougher case but I think usyk is going to box and fight in a way fury has never had to deal with before and I think usyk can outbox the gypsy king but I dunno if he could win the fight if fury started leaning on him and making the fight dirty like AJ should have done

      Yeah the thing about Fury is that is Usyk would have to target the body a lot more IMO. Make Fury pay for trying to get in close and wrestle him. Outboxing him would obviously still be very difficult but if he also added in some threats by throwing big overhands once in a while it might get Fury's respect. Honestly I'll just be happy if we get to see that fight haha
