I remember this episode well. Was the day I became a lifetime fan
Sawyer Brown always puts on a great show. Even after 40 years, they are high energy and sound terrific. Mark Miller amazes me, the way he can dance like a maniac and still sound better than most singers do in a studio. Wow!
Seriously, how does he do it?!? Try dancing vigorously for just one minute and then try to sing. I find it difficult to even speak clearly. Mark does it throughout an entire show. Amazing.
Right?! I love to watch him dance. He's so fun to watch!
To me, they are the quintessential country band. High energy, superior playing, songwriting, and vocals. It’s just what I love.
Sawyer Brown is the most entertaining I have seen. After all these years, I still enjoy their songs and concerts.
I’ve seen them And I got close to Mark Miller. Main band member
MY BELOVED!!!! They still end every concert with Step That Step...... AWESOME!!! We have the privilege to have become friends with them since seeing them in concert so many times. They are still amazing & couldn't meet a nicer, genuine group of guys!
Even that long ago Sawyer Brown rocked it! No way wouldn’t win!!❤😊
Forty years later, Sawyer Brown is still making great music. Mark Miller is in fine voice in 2024. My, how times fly.
They would go on to not only win the grand prize of $100,000, but country music stardom!!! By the way, my favorite song by Sawyer Brown is "The Dirt Road" from 1991.
Great tune. I love all their music, from day one till their latest, but Six days just speaks to me.
I fell in love with both the sound and those blue eyes. Been a fan ever since Star Search!
I have always been a Sawyer Brown fan. From the time I was about 11 or so.... The full 40 years
I was just a kid watching Star Search and liked any music but when I heard this I just knew that one day we'd all be thanking them for their music.
Just saw Sawyer Brown live in Wendover Nevada a couple weeks ago. The guys still kill it. Amazing show.
The very first time they were on - I knew they wear destined for greatness. I was only 12 when this took place. i am now the golden age of 50 going on 51 in December and Sawyer Brown is in my top five favorite country groups of all time.
I was like five, I knew it too. Then two years later I got to see them open for CDB at my local dirt track, I still remember it like yesterday.
I saw Sawyer Brown in Concert at the Central States Fair last night they were Phenomenal Sawyer Brown sang this song at the Fair
I remember watching them on this show. I couldn’t wait for the next episode so I could see Sawyer Brown again
I was 11 when I first seen Sawyer Brown on Star Search & I've been a fan every since! They have never been given enough recognition, in the country music industry, like they deserve.
The more that I watch their clips, the more that I second what you say here. They were overlooked for the award show bling WAY too many times. The thing to remember though is that the awards are NOT what get the bills paid. (shaking my head)
God bless you and this awesome act always!!!

I was about seven or eight, about 1986, and Sawyer Brown and Charlie Daniels Band played my sleepy little Northern California town. The stage was in turn 3-4 of the local dirt track. It was an amazing experience.
Mark Miller is just so adorable! He is so exuberant and energetic. I just love him.
Violet Miller .....
Mark Miller ......
Hmmmm ......
Mom ? .........
I just saw them in concert tonight. He’s high energy! Really makes the show special.
@@zillabeast you should’ve seen him in the mid 80’s, absolutely electric.
I agree! I remember as a kid watching him sing…he always had so much energy and just couldn’t stand still and I loved that about him! And, of course, I love his smile too!
I've been a fan since I first heard Sawyer Brown!
Yep first heard "This Time" on a little community TV station and been hooked ever since, even managed to get our local radio station playing them by hitting them up for requests all the time.
me too!!
They're still rocking it! Been a fan all along... Mark's wife is a lucky lady.
Me too. ❤️❤️
Was a big Star Search fan, and I distinctly remember those boys running on stage and within 30 seconds I was HOOKED ! That voice of Mark's. OMG.. and he STILL sounds the same.
Will always be my favorite. They still have the same energy today! Keep on rollin!
Wow I used to love watching Star search, knew they were going places. Only wish they were given more recognition as they deserve ❤
Sawyer Brown is AWESOME! I listen to them daily! I still love to listen after all these years.
Yup missing classes in college when they were on WAS worth it!!😀😀😳😳🎶🎶
Just saw SB last week, they still have all the great powerful positive energy & fun playing that they had way back then...and now a fantastic catalog of music!
Watched star search all the time then, was seventeen, didnt pay any attention then, didnt know they had step that step in those early days. It is a FAVORITE song of mine, it gets me moving, or at least feeling good!
This was a treat if not for all those annoying skips
Thank you sawyer brown!
We need these songs on a album!!!! Full version!!! Yall i grew up to and i want this badly!
That VOICE. We knew he was going places 👏
They put on the most high energy concerts in the late 80's- early 90's. LOVE LOVE LOVE
I can't believe it's been over 30 years!
40 years, still goin strong 💪🏻
OMG! I remember this like it was yesterday! Yet, I was 10!!
Still loving ❤ Mark and Sawyer Brown in 2024, age 65! Saw them at a fair in NJ a long time ago. I knew they would win SS!
I became a fan of theirs because of that show! Still one of my favorite bands! Can't believe you were able to find these performances!
none of the guitars are plugged in...its fake karaoke
I seen Sawyer brown on star search when they first came out an I was hooked ! I love to watch them on stage . They have so much fun it just puts me in a better place an when it's over I have the biggest smile on my face ! I love to watch him dance around on stage.. you go Sawyer brown !!
Would love to hear something new , but the old never gets old !!
That fella has one of the best voices ever.
In my opinion Mark Miller and Ronnie Van Zant (of Lynyrd Skynyrd) are two of the best voices ever.
Have seen them twice in concert! Loved them both times!
Saw them open for Kenny Rogers after their win - they blew the roof off the United Center in Chicago. Fast forward to them headlining at Country Thunder nearly 20 years later and totally owned the audience!!
berwyn58 I just saw them here in Sioux Falls last night and they still can work a crowd.
I always went for the rock group against them because my dad said they were going to win. He was right.... I haven’t stopped listening since
When I was in highscool I rooted for them every week they were on Star Search. Tomorrow they'll play at a festival across the street from my mom's apartment building.
I remember seeing them in 1986 in Kansas City at the National FFA Convention. Mark had a broken leg in a full cast and was still dancing and spinning around the stage.
And the rest is history! Many thanks for the awesome music!
Been at the top of my favorite list ever since. They've aged well!? Had a thing for Mark's voice back when I was a lonesome teenager.:).
Man I remember this, watched it every week
What a voice he has❤️❤️
I love to watch Hobie during this clip SO much!!! I don't think that I have ever seen a more happier looking dude during the fifth ad and final song. (big smile)
God bless him always!!!

June 2020... looking through CZcams and remembering.... I watched Sawyer Brown on Star Search and knew from their first performance they would be the winners... loved this group then and love them today....
Been making music and been as a band for 37 years and got to see them live in Darby Montana
I've seen them several times always a good show
I remember seeing them on Star Search!!! I also remember meeting Mark Miller back in the late 90's up in Tennessee. I was walking on the sidewalk one day, looking for a place to enjoy lunch while I was there in the city to see Travis Tritt at his fan club party. I heard a bus drive up and park a distance behind me. Looked back and saw how it was awyer Brown's bus. Well, I was excited, and, went to meet the bus....so excited that I couldn't remember how they all looked.... and, Mark was the first one off the bus. I smiled very big, and, asked him something like "Is Mark Miller on the bus?". He smiled a bit widely at me, and, happily said "I'm Mark.". I said, "Oh, I'm sorry I didn't recognize you.". He grinned and said, "That's okay." I asked him for his autograph, he gave it to me, and, he was nice enough to stand there and talk with me at least for five minutes!!! He was, and probably still is, such a "down - to - earth" person, and, wasn't "stuck - up," saying, "I don't know where Mark Is," or anything like that. He could have denied who he was like Joe Diffie did when I met him at a small bar in Georgia!!! I just loved meeting Mark Miller, and, I will *NEVER* forget that moment in my life!!!
Hey! If you don't mind my asking, what happened with Joe Diffie when you saw him? I was blessed to meet him in 2000 and in 2007 and he couldn't have been more of a gentleman both times. I may never be able to grasp his already being gone. To me, the man should still be here. (burying my head) God bless you and his family always!!!

Coming to my little hometown a week from tomorrow. Can't wait, and their new album is classic Sawyer Brown.
I thought they were Amazing on Star Search! 🌟 I seen them in concert in the 80s with the Judds and Vince Gill. Then I seen them a couple times in 2012 and a few years later. They were still as energetic with Mark dancing and singing all over the stage and Hobie on the Keyboards even singing lead on a song! I would see them again in 2021 if I knew they were going to be anywhere close to where I lived.😃🎵🎶
Haha I watched this at the time on tv and loved them saw them many times in concert and got to meet them I was about 16 and 17 they are so nice too still watching in 2018 I’m 50 now lol 😜😳😊
I have seen almost countless concerts in my life.. Some of the greatest bands more than once. I had the good fortune of seeing Sawyer Brown 1 time, and have to say it was one of the best and most memorable shows I have ever seen.... These guys put their all into the show. If you get the chance to see them, by all means do it. I guarantee, you will not be disappointed. I would love to see them again!
Just saw them live in Douglas, Ga. AWESOME!
I can still remember seeing them and falling in love. Kept rooting for them until they got the money/contract and then they had a great batch of country songs. I was already a country music listener, so it worked for me. lol
One of my favorite groups
They are the greatest live show ever.
Just watched Sawyer Brown last night in Fairmont, Mn. One of the songs they played was "Talk that Talk"
This is fantastic!
One of the best voices to ever record !
I saw these guys when they were doing county fairs. So good!
Yep. You might be surprised to know they played at a race track in a town of five thousand, in rural Northern California, opening for Charlie Daniels, circa ‘85.
Now, I’ve seen some of the old school greats, Alabama included, but I remember that show like it was yesterday and I was about six back then.
37 years ago, where the heck did those years go ? Vanished
Watched them every week on Star Search, went to their concerts when in CA. Best group ever
Awesome !!! Always been a fan
Mark had so much energy 🎉🤩
Such a fun band! Add great music and you have one helluva band.
I remember watching start searching seeing them do their win it was wonderful
Love their music!
I Love Sawyer Brown!!!
its funny that Sawyer Brown just auditioned to get the tape to promote the band and ended up winning.
I've loved sawyer brown
seen them 2 days ago. great show
When I first saw him I thought he jumped around too much. But later I listen to more of their songs , and now I really like his voice
Dudes are great!
Thank you so much
I remember watching them on Star Search
Star Search is the first thing that comes to mind about Sawyer Brown!
I've been a fan since that appearance. I remember there was a Rock band called, "Sidewinder" (snake or missile, I have no idea), with a hot lead blonde singer in a miniskirt in the semi-finals. They were up against a Supremes-wannabe trio called, "Hott!" with the winner there going up against SB for the win. I was sure they would beat "Hott!" and then it would be toe-to-toe slugging match between the two bands. But somehow "Hott!' won, and I knew right then Sawyer Brown would beat them easily.
Same here,
Me too love them been a fan ever since
Didn't all those rock bands with hot blonde lead singers in miniskirts look alike? 'Twas actually Stroxx who were up against Hot in semis. It's on CZcams now, so no denying that. Ironically, Stroxx -- fronted by the wife of the late Sam Melville, of "The Rookies" fame -- were the band who finally knocked Sawyer Brown out of quarterfinals -- with a song whose yachting video, I recall, had just lost on MTV's "Basement Tapes". Of course they edited them out of this upload.
Oops, Stroxx didn't do their "Basement Tapes" song ("Take a Holiday"). Why did I think they did? Can't believe they didn't, with some of the ghastly songs they did do. That Sawyer Brown quarter-finals episode is on here now: "Star Search January 7, 1984".
5 show veteran here. Last one February at Strawberry Festival - Plant City, Fl. As always - great show!
They knew how to keep it fun.
Now that's entertainment!😉
THEY STILL DO 30 YEARS LATER.
greatest group of all time
Great music, magical...no wires on the guitars, keyboards, amps, or bass?? Show must go on I guess...
Hell, I didn't even notice that. Maybe vocals only?
Yeah, somebody took the whole "going wireless" thing a tad too literally.
We've seen many lives with pre-recorded vocals, but the whole damn band!? In competition?;
That must have felt cheese balls.
This is when I became a fan.
When Duncan Cameron left the band 15 years ago, I'd love to know if the other members tried to get Bobby Randall to return. I love when that fiddle is in his hands here. I wish that Hobie still wore that hat too. I love his smile underneath it. (smiles)
God bless every member of the act always!!!
Holly in East Tennessee

Besides that one of a kind voice, I LOVE the way he loosely yet rhythmically kinda weaves around those near mumbling-style vocals.
Similar to they way George Jones does.
