  • Part of a wider series spotlighting untold artist communities worldwide, En Iwamura takes Avant Arte around his ceramic studio in the Japanese village of Shigaraki.
Shigaraki’s history in ceramics dates back 800 years, and today it is one of only six ancient kiln sites in Japan. Iwamura moved to the village in 2019 for an artist residency, before going on to set up a permanent studio there. Now, he is encouraging a younger generation of artists to do the same.

Avant Arte believes in a new age where art is becoming more and more unrestrained, a time where the traditional rules and boundaries of the definition of art have been blurring. Art has been becoming a more ‘social’ and fluid experience, opposed to a conceptual object that is assigned value by institutions and influencers.
