I was only 23 and had a major surgery, those days we didn't have mobile internet and I still in the hospital while reading about upcoming Indian 2000 Guineas I knew my favourite horse was going to win. I was scheduled to leave hospital two days before Christmas yet I wanted to hear the commentary for Mystical and pleaded with the doctors to let me go on a Sunday, my stitches still raw and they were not ready to remove my urinal catheter
I somehow got home and convinced my best friend (who was getting married on 27th December) to get me a taxi
I got in and we reached the off course centre about fifteen minutes before the race.
Being a Sunday the place was too crowded and I couldn't go in, and the closest spot was on the pavement and it was a very unhygienic place for me (consider I was still with raw stitches)
I heard the commentary and rushed back home with a smile on my face even a million dollars can't buy. I did have to get admitted in hospital to get the rest of my recovery but it was all worth it.
The day mystical won in Dubai I thought India won the world cup.
I will never forget the joy mystical brought to me, how I would dream about his race lying on the hospital bed. Today I am connected to racing and a big reason is Mystical.

What a lovely "feel good" film. I'm not a Poonawala, but felt so happy and proud to see how this horse fared. Even happier, to know that he's well looked after by the family after his retirement, unlike some other stories I've heard. The happy ending makes you forget problems and feel that the world is a good place, with decent human beings. Well done!
ASTONISH is the real PRIDE of INDIA!! Pune derby winner, 2000 guineas winner, Indian Derby winner, Indian invitation cup winner, Indian St. Leger winner!!! First Indian horse to win abroad in Hong Kong the Sha Tin cup. Mystical cannot compare with Astonish. Second best Elusive Pimpernel.
M.A.M. Ramaswamy's mystical. Lost to velvet rope in Indian derby because of jockey B.prakash. but best was always elusive pimpernal. Winning 22/23 including Indian derby and turf invitation cup.

Brilliant mystical!! But without taking anything away from him there were also two others Elusive Pimpernel and Astonish but they could not make it👍👍🙏🙏

Well u weren't born the time there was a horse named Elusive Pimpernal...the greatest ever...even his last race is still a mystery...I was present at that day in Pune race course...on that fateful day

Mystical, I love this horse. It has given a cherish moment for Indian in Dubai.
I remember how Mystical had won his first start in fantastic time and when I looked at his manner of victory I said to myself this horse is going places. In his subsequent start surprisingly he came at 5/1 in Bangalore against some Turbo Jet or some such horse who was favorite.My close friend a scientist from the USA slammed the fave to beat Mystical and I was fighting with him saying Mystical would smash the favorite.He asked me if I was nuts as he was a scientist. Anyway Mystical ran away by 10 lengths and the rest off course is history. He is no doubt a great horse.
May I know which breed Mystical belongs........

ASTONISH was the first Indian horse to win abroad in Hong Kong. Then Adler won in the U.S. Mystical later won 2 races in Dubai. ASTONISH was the better horse and the Pride of India. This fact is hidden by TCG.
Poonawalas pls pls pls bring Be Safe to your stud farm...what a horse! Would do you'll proud, just like MYSTICAL. He deserves to have owners like you, just like you'll know best how to be humane, appreciate and treat a horse like him. What he has been reduced to is not right at all. Treated so badly just before the race, ridden so badly, yet he came a valiant second. Criminal! And even now a mute helpless victim of dirty politics in an unheard of place, just so that his progeny dont prove their sire's outstanding merit. What a waste of a fabulous horse and his bloodline. hope somewhere ther is punishment for what was done to him.
Poonawalas do not fill the coffers of trainers and jockeys responsible for Be Safes humiliation. Be Alert. You know who they are. You never know when they will do the same to one of your own horses. They got away scot free with it with MAM. Only Be Safe suffered.

Sorry to say , He is far from being the greatest indian thoroughbred. That Title Belongs to The Great Elusive Pimpernel, who won 22 of 23 starts incl the Indian 2000 guineas, the Indian derby and The Indian Turf Invitation Cup. He Then went on to sire a classic winner from his first crop from only 12 foals. He is now one of india's most prolific Broodmare sires.
I dont think Elusive Pimpernel had any great offsprings
