  • Ramana is a veena player and musical prodigy. His talent for music was noticed when he was a toddler. With no formal training, he could identify ragas and point out nuances. In fact, he says his introduction to the veena came about when he found a mistake while his mother was playing the instrument.
“I say that the veena chose me and not the other way around. After that instance I started training in music intensely,” he says.

We are so proud of you ( with your permission!).
The appropriate conversational language with so
much subject content makes me wonder how they
are so much ahead of their age! We,the oldies, are
so blessed to have the next generation like this.

Ramana Balachandran is a child prodigy who is well versed in Carnatic vocal, mridangam and Veena (in which he excels). The fact that Ramana was granted an age waiver by Prasar Bharati and All India Radio to appear for an audition and was directly awarded an A grade after the audition, when he was just 16 speaks for his level of talent. Madras Music Academy, too, invited him to perform at their main hall, waiving the age requirement. Not sure how many of the viewers are aware of a very rare comment by Sri Shankar Mahadevan in October 2020 who said Ramana Balachandran is an outstanding and rare musician who descended from above to go to the art form and compared him to Mandolin U. Srinivas. It is important that interviewers also do their homework about the artist before starting an interview. Ramana is very humble and modest for a very accomplished artist who answered all questions in a simple manner and gave an excellent interview - thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Every artist we bring to the show has a plethora of accomplishments and we provide the artists themselves with the opportunity to highlight their most significant ones.

He's no choice but to be humble. There are no absolutes when it comes to art. No superlatives.

Nice interview! Reveals Ramana's mature and balanced thinking. I liked how he answered the question about taking CM to global audiences. No matter what, there are limitations to how far you can popularize a highly evolved and sophisticated art form, just like quantum physics cannot be appreciated by everyone. Leave alone global .. understanding of CM north of Hyderabad itself is very limited. I agree it is far more important to expose the younger generation in South India to our art forms - that, more than anything else, will contribute towards keeping them alive. While we have so many gifted young performers in CM, the audiences are stll largely older people. That worries me more.

The organizers can follow the tradition by combing the hire nicely. Following western culture always goes in a wrong direction but the younger wanted to follow the same.
