EPISODE 51
I was extremely picky about what footage I included in the early days of the channel. You lot complained about the short videos lengths - and I guess you'll see the reasons in this film. Polished, or stable video clips they are not. We didn't know we were making episodes at the time. But, I feel they have value for those of you wanting to see more intimate recordings of our uncertain early months of work. In 2020 I bought the bought Alan off the team, so it's not been as many hands on the pump since!
Sealants 18-month tested in coastal conditions - saline, damp and UV:
Sikaflex 291
X8 Hybrid Sealant
Bostik Simson ISR 70-03 Sealant
Model: NME A/S (Husnes, Norway) 7.5m TELB
Engine: Bukh DV48 turbo diesel
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments!
Additional documentary material reviewed was directed by S Wever.

Your series is one of my favorite DIY builds on CZcams, and learning more about your previous and future expeditions has been a fabulous bonus. Keep it up and best of luck.
Cheers Greg
I always need a glass of water after watching one of your videos. Well done.
Strange, after watching this channel I always want to run out and get some orange flavored jelly beans.
@@Easy-Eight lol. I was referring to the dry humor, but I get where you're coming from.
Nice catch up video Alex, a couple of things with no real help now, if you had those 3 compressed air cylinders hydrostatically tested and repainted them black you could have got a lot more than scrap value from a lifeboat service company, the diaphragm you removed to drain the diesel is a lockout that stopped the davit hooks being released until the boat was waterbourne, also if refurbished an item of value.
As a lifelong, project obsessed, self-indulgent sailor.... I speak for many that your delivery and humor are a significant upgrade for the standard CZcams environment. "Bye"
Cheers
Thank you for the update.
Three years past you had 10K+ views? Wow, as of 7 PM EST you've less than 1,000 :(
Hope things improve in the future. I'll keep watching & rooting.
Yes the algorithm used to give my videos a minimum of 50K views, often 100K+. Now 10K is a good number.
Thank you.
YT is weird sometimes. I get these waves of DIY channels, one of which this one was also part of, and then nothing for months. The algorithm is ever changing, there's no way to really plan around that, especially with videos about restoring a life boat for arctic exploration being pretty niche.
Alan was the first lifeboat I've had a close look at, thanks to your videos. My father was alternately in the US Navy and the Merchant Marine, so I've seen lots of life boats of different sorts growing up. Curiously, the sailors get a bit twitchy when some officers' kid gets too close to emergency equipment. 🤷♂👍
Imagine deploying one by accident
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Never got that far fortunately. 🤣
Really enjoyed binge watching Alan the life boat playlist and always felt there was a lot of bits missing this episode explains most of the bits i missed
Well done to you keep it going loving this series , i have no aspirations of ever trying such stuff but i love watchin you solve problems
Cheers. Yes those earliest episodes were a learning process on the edit front.
I love this channel.
"...sat staring at example schematics online, researching everything that confused me, and then sketching my own plan and laying out components." - The electrical/electronic engineering experience in a nutshell, right there :)
So glad to find you again... I really wondered why I never was notified of postings...I was unsubbed some how..well fixed that ...as they say here.. Quick, Fast an in a fkn hurry!!!! I'm in Baltimore City Maryland... Lol!! Alan is coming along great. Your a brilliant human doing truly amazing stuff ... So I will be posting on all my social media.. I nobody .. but hey.... I'm going to order my Alan shirt...
Thanks for sharing your life with us.... ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Sorry to hear we lost you for a while. Pleased you're back!
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Grateful to be back ... Your truly amazing an fun to watch!! ALAN is just looking tickety boo... Have a great week!! ✌🏼💗
AMAZINGNES!!!
Your scripting talent is ridiculously entertaining. Coupled with the dry delivery you only need discovery and exposure to achieve the dizzy heights of notoriety and glorious success. The success measured in whatever currency your imagination can conceive. Don't forget we, the little people when you cast your gaze from that ivory tower.
So long as the tower is painted SOLAS orange.
I honestly wish I could contribute more to your ongoing presence on CZcams than just a thumbs up and a comment to help drive up your metrics. Unfortunately, that is all I am afforded to do at this time. Please, everyone viewing, do all you can to help Allan and his friends continue on with their noble goal of unmitigated internation CZcams success.
Your views and comments are valued - have no fear.
Great and interesting
Bumper sticker ordered 👍🏾💙
Hope to see the views go back up, I heard other youtubers mention that summer holidays are always slow. May a nice clickbait title for after the holidays to nooit views.
Not unseen for much longer...
You are a beacon for the rest.
Since you’re going to be using the 3 electric motors in an emergency, what about creating a mount on the bow for one of the motors to create a pseudo bow thruster when navigating tight spots since Alan doesn’t have a Z-drive Prop (360 degree rotating prop). It would only be used for short periods at a time such as when your docking.
It’s would be mounted on a shaft so when you’re underway you can access it through the bow hatch and lift the shaft vertically out of the water so it would not get damaged by ice.
This...is why I leave the comments section switched on.
This and jet ski guy's rantings.

If you put together a picture book of some sort with a simple description of time and job or something like that I'd most definitely buy one. Autographed is up to you and your time constraints but I'd buy one with or without. Coffee table format preferred even though I don't drink coffee but I have a comfy Laz-Z-Boy to enjoy what I hope you consider and market.✌️
The time investment vs. returns wouldn't be worth it I'm afraid. My Arctic photography book took months to curate, and has undersold compared to my other books.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals I understand completely and will add another of your books to my collection soon. If there wasn't a rather large puddle in the way I'd loved to have volunteered preferably off camera as fame and fortune is not something I seek. Safe travels to you and yours.
Hey Alex will you be planning to put a seawater/freshwater maker inside Allan sometime in the future?
Probably only as a backup/emergency. The big tank is fine for short/medium passages, and once iced you have access to snow.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Don't forget to have a plentiful supply of disinfectant wipes so that you can have a dry wash in front of a heater as well since you can't really have showers or wash with a hand pale in extreme cold climates. Being comfortably clean does wonders for your moral when you are under stressful situations in cold climates.
As a welding supply worker here in the USA I purchase 249 ft3 (4 liter) all the time. I have seen late 1800's and early 1900's cylinders still in use as CO2 tanks (lower pressure). The German made tanks from the early 1900's all had swastikas stamped on them. Here in the US we stamped over the symbol, filling in the open ends, so it has 4 boxes put together (two on top, two on bottom) Their value as a compressed gas cylinder is way more than their scrap value. Just thought you might like to know for future reference.
Basically saying there is no such thing as a cylinder that is too old. They may go bad but don't judge an old book by its cover.
Thanks Brian. Point taken. The fittings at the top were a real mess with corrosion, so I assumed game over.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals Yeah we just unscrew the valves and put new ones in. They need to be hydrotested every 10 years put that is cheap and easy. Sandblast and paint and a new valve would have them looking like new.
I bet getting 68 people into one of those is an interesting exercise. Kind of like the airliner olympics, where a mfr hires a bunch of college athletes to evacuate a new model in 90 seconds to prove to FAA it can be done.
Given that or a burning rig....
Don't forget to install sidelights, port red and starboard Green. Also the polar region distress equipment and pyrotechnics and standard maritime rations for survival as well as medical equipment and survival suits for polar regions.
Nice video Alex, pls tell me, how did u calculate the stability of Alan b4 it's waterborne(I mean upright), tnx. Bon voyage!
A warm pair of socks too?
We didn't make additional stability calcs prior to initial trials? The changes from 'factory' set up were all removing mid and upper weight, so at that stage the stability would only be enhanced, not worsened.
Hiya, where did you end up taking the air cylinders, as I have 10 of them from my 36 foot lifeboat, please?!
Apparently diving companies might buy them for shore storage.
Great vedio Alex so were is Alan made?
A mix of Norway and Singapore I think!
I dream of haveing one some day but I do not have your energy!
I follow every thing you post and I have a box of goodies I sell survival equipment
So I'm sure you enjoy the stuff but we're do I send?
Very kind! Email via my website contact page.
Alex……did you try any of the provisions? Brave enough? How long could the original lifeboat engine run on the fuel provided? Was there are diving board provided for outside entertainment?
We did nibble on a survival biscuit or true. It was exactly as feared - perhaps death is preferable.
SOLAS required that the fuel lasts at least 24hrs of constant motoring, but I suspect this is conservative.
No diving or any entertainment whatsoever - only the relief of being alive inside a crowded, smelly, sealed vessel.
Great video, shame covid killed off your original plan. What happened to James, is he still with you.
Steve
Still speaking, yes! He's more a climber at heart.
Are your Alan pyjamas available to buy?
Everything has a price!
10:28 Steve1989MREinfo would have probably eaten those rations on his YT channel lol
I can't imagine how you started this project without a angle grinder
Unimaginable now.
You should have dold the airtanks to a scuba shop and could have sold the fuel tank to a farm... or those survival types that live in cabins away from the towns..
I know this now. Alas.
@@AlexHibbertOriginals lol I am a diver and when I seem the holes you drilled in them I was cringing... yelled NNNNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!! At my phone. Lol
I wanted one of those boats for a house boat project, but they just are not any around me.

Why aren't you narrating nature documentaries? You put, dare I say it, David Attenborough, to shame.
