- Time for another experiment! This year I am starting dahlia tubers early and inside. Once we're past our last frost date, they will grow outside in containers. Let me know your experience with this!
I did a similar test last year and believe it or not, my Sam's club dahlias did better than my more expensive ones!! And the Sam's club tubers lived through the winter and are sprouting in pots as I write this - the others - nope!! And I did part in the ground and part in 7 gal grow bags and the grow bags did MUCH better!! I'm doing all 90 in grow bags this year! Typically flower farmers send a single tuber where larger growers send the entire clump. And yes, you could get more flowers from the bigger clumps. I got all mine this year from Longfield Gardens, a large company but great reputation (they are whole clumps) and some have several sprouts which means more flowers - YAY!! About 3/4 have already sprouted and I'm getting ready to get them in their big grow bags! This is my second year growing them - fingers crossed for all of us new to growing dahlias!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I'm going to order grow bags for my dahlias 🎉
@@backyardbeauty9283 Awesome! You will love them - and they can be used year after year!
I am growing everything in pots this year and I decided to get grow bags on Amazon. Good luck! Last summer my dahlias were so tall, they lo e the morning sun.
I would love to know what you think of grow bags!
@@backyardbeauty9283 so far so good! I got 20- 10 gallon bags for $40. I planted some roses in a few and when it's warm enough in my zone (7a) my dahlia babies are gonna get potted up! I'm so excited for summer!! Lol I like that the bags have handles too 😉
Your dahlias should do fine in pots. I always called the bottom it's "feet" which has the old dried roots hanging down. Can't wait to see how beautiful they will be!
I would trim off the broken tubers.
I just potted up all my Dahlias also. Last year was my first year growing them, and I am hooked! I ended up having to get all new tubers this year; I lost all of them to rot over the winter. So, I will be trying a different method of storage this year. I live in Zone 6B. SW Michigan
I'm so sorry you lost your tubers! Do you know what caused them to rot?
@Backyard Beauty I had my tubers stored in cardboard boxes with pine bedding. You're supposed to just do a few sprays with water just to barely get it wet, and I Did That.... I had been checking the tubers every month, and they were fine. I checked again last month, and there were mold and rot spots on all my tubers. I'm not going to lie; I had a good cry, LOL ! So I'm going to try storing in vermiculite this year.
My walmart dahlia are sprouting Awesome.
So glad to hear that!
Good on you for trying. Last year was my first year and I too pre potted them to sprout and it worked great. What you will learn is if the "neck" is broken it won't sprout. Some of your tubers looked broken but planting them like you did should be fine since there seemed to be at least a sprout or an eye on all your plantings. I had a good crop and they bloomed until Oct. I'm in zone 7, Maryland. I'm growing just for me and not willing to do too much fussing, so I didn't dig them up and I'm waiting to see if any come back. I did buy 5 more this year, shorter and more ball type. Good luck, they are beautiful!!
Also I watched your preschool flower planting and it was very impressive and cute. The kids really seemed to enjoy themselves!!
Thank you for the encouragement!! I'm interested to hear if your dahlias from last year come back this spring.
I bought some dahlias from Big Lots for $3
Nice! I hope they do well for you!

You have some amazing clumps of dahlias. I know most were big box stores but can you mention the name of the small farm grower you purchased from? I still have a few I’d like to get.
Of course! Sunny Meadows Flower Farm.
I’ll be sure to remember them for next year. Thank you!
Good luck, for heavens sake, cut that bag of soil down to reach in better, make your life easier
