  • Designed by one of Britain's most gifted railway designers, Sir Nigel Gresley, the Flying Scotsman showcased British craftsmanship at its best. The locomotive, often described as a mechanical racehorse, broke records as the first steam engine to reach 100 miles per hour and the first to run non-stop between London and Edinburgh.

I would have been about 8 years old when I saw this train in person in Dallas TX about 1969. My dad was a big fan of old trains and a model railroader.

Dangerous work…. 8:07 when you mention the ages of some of the people working there. But that’s what made them into strong men. I’m not in support of child labor, but 13, 14 year olds are young men. Given the opportunity to learn hands on skills was a vast advantage for them…. over what we see happening today. Many places around the United States have lost their trade skills in favor of sending all young adults to college/university! Not even shop classes in high school 😢🥺☹️🤷‍♂️. So very sad. JMO

First to reach 100mph? Not certain about: two earlier contenders from the Great Western are considered. Rous-Marten recorded 'City of Truro', 4-4-0 at just over 100 mph down Wellington bank in 1904. In 1908 there was a very unofficial run from Swindon works of a 4-6-0 Saint class (2915 St Bartholomew IIRC) taken light engine post overhaul by a bunch of 'techies 'up to 108 mph.
    A most enjoyable video.
