I was lucky enough to go to Fillmore West in the late 60s. You had to be there to understand how really incredible it was. Wish I had saved all the posters that were laying all over the ground after the shows. Astonishing how valuable they are now.
.Hello, I smiled at your message because my mother saw the Beatles concert in 1965 in Lyon (France) and she had the opportunity to have the concert poster autographed, see a photo with the group because she knew a person who worked in this room (winter palace) .... Bill always was so articulate. Even back in the late '60s, Bill could see and understand what was happening in the music biz. I worked for Bill and was working for him at the time of his death, he had, and insisted that all of us were held to these same standards. Unfortunately now days, the business has back slid to a purely commercial attitude.

Steven Tyler's, David Lee Roth's, Mike Rutherford's, Bill Bruford's, Phil Collins', Keith Emerson's, Greg Lake's, Chrissie Hynde's, and a great one about King Crimson, "In the Court of King Crimson". And several more on Genesis, Led Zeppelin & Yes.... it really is an interesting sub genre..... I feel rewarded after having read each of them, really. Not many kinds of books do that for me, like the ones that revolve around my musical heroes. I sure wish Robert Fripp would write one, that's for sure....😎
Bill Graham was an iconically friendly, kind hearted and cool person! He has left a huge impression on me. He seemed rather humble, and to have a genuine zest for life. What a positive joyful vibe he possessed! 😃🌄🌺💝☮
I spend a month in Frisco in July 1967 and a nice girl I met brought me one night at the Fillmore, then, I spent most of my nights there. I was a young French student, arriving from France, I didn't know anything about Haight Ashbury, Flower Power, hippies, and all that kinds of things... Can you imagine my state of mind? this month really changed my life....
I was at this concert.....standing against the stage mezmerized...feeling every note and beat to my bones..still gives me chills !..full tilt boogie with Snookie flowers on alto sax and Janis were totally as one ..great times!! Thank you I everyone ..deb
The Honda dealership is on the first floor. Ballroom's upstairs. You're forgetting Waters Buick occupied the same space during the Fillmore days. And it was Les Vogel Chevrolet during the Carousel and El Patio days before that. That's what the building was designed for back in 1926 - showrooms on the first floor, ballroom on the second. Nothing to vomit over. Hell, it's one of the few SF buildings from that era NOT to have been radically repurposed (or torn down).
I went to the Teaparty in Boston a lot in '68-'69'', graduated high school, hitched to West coast and hung out at the Fillmore in '70-'71. I saw a lot of top bands and never paid more than $3. Then the music went to arenas and stadiums and went to hell...ah, greed.
You do realize that huge, mega concerts like Woodstock, 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Atlanta Pop Festivals were the precursors to rock bands, or artists and singer-songwriters eventually going to arenas, stadiums, or organizing huge public concerts in parks in major US cities?
I wanted see Lynyrd Skynyrd in 76 at the Fillmore. I was only 8. Never got to see them live. I was grounded..so i couldn't go to day on the green at the Oakland Coliseum. ACDC was my first concert.. It was at the cow Palace.
Had a ball mid febuary 1970 in S.F seeing Country Joe & The Fish, Sons of Champlin and Area Code 451 at the Fillmore West during the chinese newyear. Happy days!

They played their last gig there ,(the original band, that is....) King Crimson played with The Nice that night. This is when Keith Emerson met Greg Lake. They discussed respective problems within their bands, and possibly forming a band together themselves.... The next step was to get past a meeting with Mitch Mitchell, which didn't work out & get Carl Palmer to quit Atomic Rooster.....😎
The tradition was free apples. The original Fillmore Auditorium was retrofitted and reopened. This was Fillmore West, a different venue. There are still free apples at the original Fillmore Auditorium now. Not many takers. The young people don't know the significance.
