Мелодию песни написал американский еврейский композитор Шолом Секунда на слова Джейкоба Джейкобса в 1932 году для мюзикла на идише «Ме кен лебн нор ме лозт ништ» («Можно было бы жить, да не дают»; английское название «I Would if I Could» - «Если бы я мог»). Мюзикл был поставлен в бруклинском Rolland Theater. Песню исполнял известный актёр и певец Аарон Лебедефф, на премьере зрители вызывали его на «бис» несколько раз, прервав спектакль. Однако мюзикл не был успешным и просуществовал только один сезон.
А я слышу другую мелодию - "В июне 1941 года Павлу Гандельману только-только исполнилось 17 лет. Началась война, и Павел, как и многие другие его ровесники, достойно встретил и прошёл эту страшную войну. Тогда же, в Кронштадте, он впервые услышал, как поют «В кейптаунском порту» вроде бы совершенно посторонние ему люди. Эксперимент вполне удался: песня ушла, как говорится, в народ и стала жить своею жизнью. Живёт она и теперь и умирать вроде бы совсем и не собирается. Вот спросите у нас кого-нибудь, наугад: знает ли он такую песню, «Бай мир бисту шейн» называется?.. Что-то вроде бы слышал? А вот «В кейптаунском порту» знает ли?
Знает…
Наверное, теперь уже с большим трудом можно (если вообще можно) отыскать ту самую запись «Моей красавицы» в исполнении Утёсова, которая перед войной «звучала в городе со всех патефонов» и которая вдохновила юного Павла Гандельмана на создание текста песни «В кейптаунском порту». . .
Феномен песни «В кейптаунском порту» поразителен.
В нашей стране приключения лихих французских моряков в Кейптауне куда более известны, чем американо-европейские томные страдания на ту же самую мелодию.
И остаётся только развести руками, когда узнаёшь, что начало этому феномену положил шестнадцатилетний еврейский мальчик Павел Гандельман, в 1940 году - девятиклассник ленинградской школы:
В Кейптаунском порту
С пробоиной в борту
"Жанетта" поправляла такелаж.
Но прежде чем уйти
В далекие пути,
На берег был отпущен экипаж.
Идут, сутулятся,
По темным улицам,
И клеши новые ласкает бриз.
Они идут туда,
Где можно без труда
Найти себе и женщин, и вина.
Где пиво пенится,
Где пить не ленятся,
И юбки узкие трещат по швам...
Но вот ворвался в порт
Французский теплоход,
В сиянии своих прожекторов.
И, свой покинув борт,
Сошли гурьбою в порт
Четырнадцать французских моряков.

Как в море лодочка,
А на пути у них таверна "Кэт"...
Они пришли туда
Где можно без труда
Найти себе и женщин, и вина...
Зайдя в тот ресторан,
Увидев англичан,
Французы были все разозлены.
И кортики достав,
Забыв морской устав,
Они дрались, как дети сатаны.
Но спор в Кейптауне
Решает браунинг,
И англичане начали стрелять...
Война пришла туда,

Swing, jazz, soul, lively energy, punchy rhythms, brass, percussion, amazing vocals, and amazing talent wrapped in a wonderful Art Deco mindset that I lust after. This is fucking fantastic!! Musicians with real talent....extreme talent coming together in such harmony. I'm thankful for people that go beyond the mass pop.

You don't have to be a fan of the Andrew Sisters to love this song. The singer is fantastic, and she's surrounded by a great group of musicians. The whole performance is top drawer including the use of the metro car.
Never was really an Andrew Sisters fan. I've heard maybe 20 covers of this song, including the original Yiddish. The Hot Sardines version is far and away the best.

Nothing wrong with that. I listen to the oldies station all the time and I'm 27 lol band class was just the best, and the jazzy stuff on saxophone was fun as hell to play.
