I'm in a great position to tackle this ranking as I'm 13 listens in on Senjutsu and I've gone back and listened to all of these albums since Senjutsu came out. Having said that, it's still not easy to separate some of these. Some of the albums I wasn't that into when they came out rose in my eyes over the last two weeks so my list is in flux and my overall Maiden list is going through a bit of a shake-up too.
    10) Virtual XI (I hate to bag on the Blaze albums but, they aren't moving around on my board.)
    09) X Factor
    08) No Prayer For The Dying
    07) Fear Of The Dark
    06) The Final Frontier (This one moved up from #8 this week)
    05) Book Of Souls
    04) Dance Of Death
    03) Brave New World
    02) A Matter Of Life Or Death
    01) Senjutsu (I'm still listening to it and growing to appreciate it more with each new spin)
Obviously, I've got the new car feeling with Senjutsu but, it inspired me to ditch everything I'd been listening to and dive into the non-classic era albums of Iron MAiden so, there's some magic with this new album. Book of Souls was really good for me when I first got that one but, I started to peter out on it after two weeks. Senjutsu just keeps getting better and better for me. The songs I wasn't into the first time through are my go-to songs now and the ones I liked at first blush are as familiar as long-time Maiden favorites. I've been listening to it as a whole piece every time but, the twelfth time through I put it on shuffle to see what would happen. It was amazing! The songs on this album are meant to be together.

Iron Maiden are my favorite band and great list there guys, anyways here's my ranking.
    10. NPFTD- Only weak one.
    9. Virtual XL- Has good songs on it, not a terrible album.
    8. AMOLAD- Kinda forgettable and boring, but has amazing songs like FTGGOG.
    7. FOTD- Very underrated album, so many good songs on here.
    6. The X Factor- Most underrated Iron Maiden album. Blaze sounds great and plenty of songs are my favorites ever.
    5. The Final Frontier- Definitely grows on you the more you listen. Love the Talisman, Mother of Mercy, and El Dorado.
    4. Book of Souls- Grew on me too, the longer songs are masterpieces upset for Empire of the Clouds. TRATB is one my favorite Iron Maiden songs.
    3. Dance of Death- Very consistent album with plenty of rockers here. Wildest Dreams is the only weak song here and Paschendale is amazing.
    2. Senjustu- Like BOS it grows on you, but here Bruce sounds better, it's more epic and consistent, and Hell on Earth might be their best closer they ever done.
    1. Brave New World- Still my favorite Iron Maiden album ever. It's a freaking masterpiece, almost every song became my favorite Iron Maiden song. Vocals, production, lyrics, riffs, and the solos are incredible.

I understand that people can have opinions, but this is just factually wrong. especially with Hallowed Be Thy Name and Rime. Hell on Earth is more like one of their weakest closers

I have to agree with Quest and Nick, I for one like long Maiden songs for some reason. Could care less about the time. I know that there are a few people that bag on how long the songs are and question if they could cut the time, but let’s face it… Iron Maiden is gonna do what they want and how they want

Well, post classic era, I know what my favorite is, anyway: Brave New World, which is tied with SiT for my favorite Maiden album of all-time. Dance of Death isn't so far behind though. SiT and BNW vie for number one overall and Dance of Death and Powerslave likewise battle it out for the second-place spot.

Nice video! Like the collaborations! Just some background: Maiden has been my first Heavy Metal band I got into around 2007. I have been into Prog before and wanted to get into some Prog Metal which brought me to Somewhere in Time and Seveth Son first.
I'll rate all the albums I have from the Post Classic Era:
    1. Dance of Death - great album, I like every song, only bad thing is the album cover. Favourites are Montsegur, Paschendale and Journeyman.
    2. A Matter of Life and Death - great concept album, only the first song is not that great.
    3. Senjutsu - Grows on me, I especially like the title track, The Parchment and Hell on Earth. Vocals by Dickinson are also better again. Maybe it will climb to number 2 in the future.
    4. No Prayer for the Dying - Some weak stuff, some strong stuff. Hooks in You is awful, Running Silent Running Deep is great.
    5. Fear of the Dark - Too long, some boring stuff like Weekend Warrior but some classics like the title track, Afraid to Shoot Strangers and underrated songs like Judas or Fugitive.
    6. The Final Frontier - Only great song is The Alchemist, the rest is way too long and repetitive.
    7. Brave New World - Ghost of the Navigator and The Mercenary are good, the rest is boring, repetitive and too long. And don't get me wrong, I like long songs and also long Maiden songs, I love Prog. And I tried for a long time listening with fresh ears because everyone is telling me how great this album is and I just don't get it.
I do not own the Blaze Bayley ones and Book of Souls. The latter one had some boring songs and Bruce Bruce did not grab me with his vocals. Blaze Bayley is a good singer but the material written by Harris sounds to me dark without being interesting enough and it seems he wrote both albums for Dickinson and let poor Bayley sing those songs.

Hey Questy, I I have a quite different ranking, but I can get your arguments. I just weigh them differently. You said, that X Factor is dreary and depressing. Agreed, but I thought you like bleak and depressing? Or the other way round: Would you like it more, if it wasn't a maiden album? Because, this is not, what to expect from Maiden?
Book of Souls: Yes, it is too long, some songs could be omitted. But as you say: "When they hit, they hit hard..." Would it be higher for you, if it was three songs shorter?
Here is my ranking, I haven't heard Senjutsu often enough to really rank it, but it might be 3 or 4 in the future.
    1. Brave new World - My No. 3 All time Maiden Album. I remember being at Rock am Ring, a German festival in 99. During intermissions, they always played two Goosebump trailers. Star Wars Ep1 and Wickerman. While Ep1 sucked, Brave New World exceeded my expectations by far. Wickerman, Ghost of the Navigator, Title Track, Blood Brothers, Mercenary and Nomad are all on my best of playlist. Only the fallen angel doesn't much for me. But at least one meh song is on every Maiden album. There is no flawless one. By the way: You could make an episode about the best return to forms by metal bands. I think Maiden would be my No. 1.
    2. Book of Souls - Holy crap, would never have expected such a return to form. Speed of light is shitty, but Book of souls, the Red and the black, Empire, Shadows are all in my Maiden Best of Playlist
    3. Dance of Death - Abysmal cover, but fun album. Montsegur is great, Paschendale is an all time great.
    4. Fear of the Dark - Afraid to shoot strangers, Title track, Wasting love and The Fugitive are classics, the rest is ok to sub par.
    5. X Factor - The 1st album I bought at release. Would be even higher with Bruce. Sign of the cross is great. Edge of darkness has really grown to one of my favorites. Production is a bit dry.
    6. A Matter of live and death - Is ok, but not a classic
    7. Final Frontier - Nick is right. This album is not terrible, but it doesn't klick.
    8. No Prayer - No massive highlights and some real weak songs
    9. Virtual XI - Futureal and The Clansman, the rest should never have been recorded

    7- X- factor (#14)
8- Fear of the dark (#15)
9- No prayer for the dying (#16)
    10-Virtual 11 (#17)
It's quite difficult for me to make this ranking. Except Virtual, which I love three or four songs and I don't care too much about the rest of the album...it's hard from 4 to 9, it depends on the time of the year, they're quite interchangeable

Okay I have not heard Senjitsu in its entirety yet aside from the two singles that were previously released before the album came out and I am currently awaiting my pre=order double booklet CD to arrive in the mail so I can listen to it in its entirety in my own leisure despite the temptations of hearing it on CZcams or other forums but my patience is wearing thin and I want the damn thing to hurry up and get here lol.

Virtual 11/ Fear of the Dark/No prayer for the Dying/Final Frontier/The X factor/Dance of Death/Brave New World /Matter of Life and Death/The Book of souls as my top album of this time period. As for Senjitsu, I will have to give it a few fair listens and see where it falls on this list?

Good points about "No Prayer for the Dying" and "The X-Factor". One is a bit cheesy and the other one really dark. I don't really care for dark music.. Not for one hour straight anyway so even if they are musically good I tend not to gravitate against that sort of music. That's why "A Matter of Life and Death" isn't something I play often either. It's just too grey for me. I honestly take some fun cheesy music before it any day of the week. Even if it musically isn't as good.

Tis almost the hallowed season for Deseased!!!!
The first time I ever saw Maiden was on the Virtual XI tour in 1998. And yes, I saw them at a club! Roseland in NYC with Dio! I was blown away, and I've seen them every tour since.
Tough for me to rank, as I've never given X-Factor, Virtual XI, The Final Frontier or Book Of Souls a proper listen.
I can do without Maiden albums post-7th Son. I just wanna see the legends tour & play live!
Dance Of Death is far and away my favorite post-7th Son album.
I guess Fear Of The Dark is #2, but overall it is a pretty weak album.
No Prayet For The Dying absolutely sucks. I do like Mother Russia, but that's it.
I wish Maiden would get out of their comfort zone, echo chamber, yes-man producer cocoon, and work with someone who will challenge them and edit them and trim the f**king fat. Maybe Colin Richardson or Jens Borgen.
If Maiden are gonna continue to write new music and release albums, they need to trim the lengths and speed up the playing. Because right now (and for a while now) Maiden sounds like old men playing after dinner music at the old folks home.

    1. No Prayer for the Dying (The most listened of these for sure, I love this album, a great follow up to what they did in the 80's, Mother Russia, Running Silent Running Deep, Tail Gunner, Fates Warning, No Prayer for the Dying are just amazing strong Iron Maiden songs).
    2. Brave New World
    3. Senjutsu (Thank you IRON MAIDEN! 😊)
    4. Book of Souls
    5. Fear of the Dark (Half of this album is amazing)
    6. A Matter of Life and Death
    7. Dance of Death
    8. The Final Frontier (Great songs... but Bruce sounds like he's forcing a bit when he hits the higher notes, and it's the only album where I can complain about his performance.)

Best songs on post Bruce return IMO are:
    1) Lord of Light ( fast galloping rhythms, Bruce sounds awesome, has some cool dark melodic passages and is just pure Metal which very few maiden songs are these days)
    2) Paschendale ( just epic, amazing Solos)
    3) The legacy ( probably Maidens best prog epic on the post Bruce return era)
    4) Fallen Angel (incredibly underrated)
    5) The talisman (great maiden package)

    Worst to best for me:
The X factor: Never listened to it in full cause my ears burn...the first three songs and Fortunes of war are good but the rest is painful.
Virtual XI - This has two bad songs (angel and the gambler, eyes of a stranger) and Clansman is a banger the rest is fine.
No prayer for the dying - its good but nothing stands out
Fear of the Dark - a bit more inconsistent than No prayer but despite some stinkers the highs go really high.
Senjutsu - Its good but while some songs are really diferent and interesting others like Time Machine while there gud they borrow to many sections from other songs. Love the last 4 songs.
AMOLAD - Really consistent album but it doesnt do anything special for me except for a handful of songs such as For the Greater Good of God and Brighter than a thousand Suns. Nothing wrong with this but I prefer the others.
The Book of Souls - Agree with Questy about the long songs being amazing and the smaller songs being a bit weaker but, even so, I like a couple of the shorter ones as well.
Dance of Death - This is a huge jump from Book of Souls. Love every single song except Gates of Tomorrow and Wildest Dreams ( which are just good ). Rainmaker, Dance of Death and Paschendale are a few of my favourite Maiden songs.
Brave New World - Not a single good song, every song is great at the least. Nothing else to say.
The Final Frontier - My favourite Maiden album. This is controversial but I have the best memories of listening to it. Besides that this has the most varied songwriting they ve had (imo) and I know every single song by heart. Cheers

In all humble honesty I don't think Brave new world is fit to kiss Powerslave's feet lol. I can hear you saying fuck you and that's the way it should be. Ps I fucking love Back in the village. I am going to be perfectly honest with you I think the new album is possibly the best thing they've done post eighties. I get its a bit hype but some of the songs are really resonating with me. The Parchment is fucking outstanding and like the Red and the black it's a song you could put in the classic 80s era and they would fit perfectly. Fucking love that song and Hell on earth is brilliant as well. Not so keen on the death of the Celts it would for me be a good reunion maiden song. The rest of the album is as solid as fuck and has great variations of style and approach to make it very interesting. Yeah top Maiden post eighties album for me and it just gets better the more you listen. The Parchment though, what a song and already a classic maiden track for me.

  • @Leo_ofRedKeep

I feel No Prayer and Fear fully belong in "the classic era". I do not hear a drastic style change in them, more a return to the original formula after the detour taken with Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son. This is how it felt back then and I fully enjoyed both.
The X-Factor is another matter. No, the singer is not good, so often off pitch even I can hear it and he is trying to do things he can't. Lemmy couldn't sing, so he didn't try and it worked. This one does (try) and it doesn't (work). He sounds weak too, although that could be a poor mixing decision - bad end result, whoever is at fault and the guitar riffs lack edge too. Was the bass player at the mixing desk, by any chance?
Then whoever wrote the lyrics did it regardless of the melodic lines and there are many places in which the singer has to squeeze phrases together to make them fit. "I… don't… care… forhisworldanymore" in Lord Of The Flies. Terrible. A lot of the words were not written to be sung and it just feels clumsy.
