    I applaud your willingness to experiment. Years and years ago (before you were even born! lol) my Grams told me, "It's only paint. If you don't like it, just paint again." When I bemoaned the potential extra work, she reminded me that I'd be a year older next year anyway. "If you don't like it, change it." It's ben a great Life Lesson for me. ❤

      That was my view when my younger daughter got into dyeing her hair when she was a teen! It took me longer (and was harder) to accept the tattoos 😂😂😂. I figure someone will make a fortune if they can come up with an easier tattoo removal process in about 10 years. (Not for all tattoos - some are really beautiful and interesting. But what someone likes at 18 may seem really idiotic to them when they’re 30).

    MaCenna, Something for you to mull over… In spite of the age of those cabinets, they appear to be made from solid hardwood. In California, many cabinets of that era were made from solid redwood. When you’re ready to replace those cabinets in your newly renovated kitchen, will you please consider either using them in your garage or donating them to your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore?

    Even though im am not an archetectect/interior designer, i'm actually a web designer/graphic designer. I am living for MaCenna stressing about vibes and colors. The part when she spoke at the end when she said "it isn't a big deal but it is in my world!" I totally felt that!!! Thank you MaCenna for inspiring other creatives and being so relatable! I think switching out the knobs to something different and long is better. Love the dark cabinets, took the kitchen to the Next level!

    I’m so grateful when you show moments like this when you choose to pivot or you’re honest in saying you don’t like a design choice you made. When we were renovating our home, I felt like I was the only one who ever experienced this! I have a difficult time not going into panic mode-but when I feel immediate regret about a design choice I’ve made, I know that I just need to power through and do something that will make me happier. Sometimes it’s tempting to just feel defeated and leave it as is, but I always feel better when I fix a poor decision!

    Humbly suggest an oil rubbed bronze spray paint to pull in a lil sheen from the stainless but a darker color so they don’t call so much attention. I think that’s the best color option if you’re gonna reuse the handles.

    I haven’t finished watching, but wanted to give you a tip. When I moved into my house, there were several coats of paint on all the door hinges because they didn’t tape them off or take the doors down to paint. I found out I could use a cheap sauce pan, put in the hardware and cover with water, then bring the water to a boil. Most of the paint came right off on its own. No stripper needed! In future, if you have metal hardware that needs to be stripped, do it this way. It’s super fast and very little work required!

    • @karlam7253
      @karlam7253 Před rokem +1

      @toneluy8343 I went from an antique white to black. I have a small kitchen and with the darker color it appeared smaller to me. This darker color shows everything, which I thought would be the other way around. It took me a long time to paint them with a brush and roller. I really loved the antique white and got an idea about painting them. Bad decision, and now I am trying to find the motivation to go back to what they were. Clearly, I didn't think long and hard enough about it. I watched McCenna paint her cabinets and hoped that she would enjoy hers for a long time. It's a lot of work, time, and money.

  • @debbiereid8669

    McCenna, the shape of your handles is more old English Tudor, very similar to French fleur de li. I'm a designer here in Ireland, the vibe I was getting was old French country, but if I was doing your kitchen, I would've changed to knobs with an antiqued brushed steel to blend with your appliances. Also I'd have a couple faux trailing plants on your fridge to soften the side.

    I love the color of the cabinets, however, really dislike the semi-gloss. I definitely feel like it cheapens the look of the kitchen and gives me DIY vibes vs. the professional soft look the cottage has. I get that maybe since they were dark, you wanted to still have light bounce around the room, but definitely a no. Also, a vintage, brushed brass is definitely the look! Thank you for being open to trying new things cause I’m learning from your choices too 🤍

    No to the silver. I would keep them black or just replace. The hardware is such an easy thing to swap out and can make a big difference to the overall look. I’ve seen someone do this before with cup hooks to screw them in even easier, they took one cup hook and used it as a “drill bit” in the drill and then hooked it into the cup hook they were screwing in. Then they didn’t need to screw them by hand 😄
    I’m excited to see the way your kitchen turns out!! ❤🎉

    I usually love everything you do, but not sure about these kitchen units. Firstly I don't like the shiny finish, it looks cheap and brings out all the imperfections, secondly I think the colour is too dark but it might look different when you paint the walls, thirdly you are right about the handles they do need changing. Just my opinion ❤

    Maceanna, a simple trick to remove paint from cabinet hardware is to soak them over night in an old crackpot, with soap and water. The paint bubbles off. Some may need a brushing but it doesn't need to be wire.

    There is so much I love about this video! First the equipment and recommendations, and your reasoning behind your recommendations; the reasoning behind using 220 sand paper and of course the benefits of going this route; your numbering method, although it may be general knowledge how to hang your cabinets, while painting is such a fantastic hack! Lastly, most importantly how your vision can go off the rails (door handles) and it’s OK if it does! This is refreshing to know that even for you (genius designer) that sometimes it just doesn’t work.

    The cupboards look great now.....Do you not use sugar soap to clean before painting? It is specifically for de-greasing. After a light sanding to give surfaces a key, so the paint can stick. Then sugar soap really gets any shine off ..😀🇬🇧

  • @rina.a
    @rina.a Před rokem

    A hammered metal simply calls for an antique finish, so even an antiqued pewter would fit color-wise. However, the design (shape + size) is quite chunky and while this wasn't so prominent while the hardware was black, painting it in pewter made it look oversized and cheap. The knob you tried last definitely looks better.
    The color of the cabinets is beautiful, brings warmth to the space, and fits so well with the backsplash and the floor tile. Excellent choice :)
