Here it is, the new project Mini. Found on E-bay but I lost the auction only to later find the higher bidder messed the seller around so it was offered to the next highest bidder...... Me. The Mini is a 1997 Rover Cooper MPI and has been off the road in a garage since 2007! It's what some might call a barn find.
In this update I scratch and itch and decide to strip back the roof paint to see what lies beneath. I also clean up a bit of rust in the boot to expose a corroded boot floor near to the o/s/r subframe rear mount.

We (as lads) used to drive naturally rusty 80's Fords like XR2 and XR3i, I remember singing along to Apollo 440's "can't stop the rock" but inserting the word "rot" lol. Ah well, was funny at the time Keith, I guess you had to be there.

Hi Keith, some frustrating rust situations going on there! But you obviously made the right decisions, resulting in less work to remedy! Great job in the boot! Still think you make it look easy imo, as I've not done any body repair work before! Great stuff 😊

My roof was the same. I welded it fine. Worth fixing properly.

Hi Keith, enjoying seeing the videos and your progress! I remembered when you showed the roof that the car was vandalised by kids jumping on the roof of mine and few other local cars. I thought they just repaired it but must have replaced it.
Think the bonnet was replaced as well if I remember rightly.
No crash damage so hopefully nothing more sinister to be found now 🤞

Tom Humphries Thanks for filling in the detail, that explains it. It’s coming along nicely, just finished all the sills and structural stuff so time to get on with the new front end.

Welding the roof in the worst corner really isn't an issue, as it's got a lot of shape the keep any distortion too a minimum. No need to replace the whole corner just keep it small & weld/tack slowly let it cool every time. Forget the fibreglass, be brave you've got the skills

That roof really isn’t to bad is it. I have a few repairs to do on the 89 and clubman so hopefully mine will be ok.

What did you use to rub it back to bear metal? I need to do this on mine as I have the same small holes on outer trim

Lead free solder would have been a good bet but fibreglass filler is very tough as well. It's stronger than body filler.

Good idea Michael, I would love to learn how to lead load.

@@classicminiworkshop .Is there a single area where a Mini doesn't rust?

Looking good mate. Always annoys me when you keep finding more rust/Holes.

Hi Keith, love the videos of this build so far. I've noticed some minor rust in the roof guttering on my 1997 cooper so was interested in this episode. What did you use to get in the guttering to strip the paint in order to see the damage? Thanks

The Rover minis certainly weren't well built. My Spi was the same with the roof
