Lockheed Martin THAAD Extended Range (THAAD ER)

  • Lockheed Martin is pushing for funding for the development of an ER version of the THAAD to counter maturing threats posed by hypersonic glide vehicles adversaries may employ, namely the Chinese WU-14, to penetrate the gap between low and high-altitude missile defenses. The company performed static fire trials of a prototype modified THAAD second booster in 2006 and continued to self-fund the project until 2008. The current 14.5 in (37 cm)-diameter single-stage booster design would be expanded to a 21 in (53 cm) first stage for greater range with a second "kick stage" to close the distance to the target and provide improved velocity at burnout and more lateral movement during an engagement. Although the kill vehicle would not need a redesign, the ground-based launcher would have to be modified with a decreased interceptor capacity from eight to five. Currently, THAAD-ER is an industry concept and not a program of record, but Lockheed believes the Missile Defense Agency will show interest because of the threats under development by potential adversaries. If funding for the THAAD-ER began in 2018, a fielded product could be produced in 2022. Although the system could provide some capability against a rudimentary hypersonic threat, the Pentagon is researching other technologies like directed energy weapons and railguns to be optimal solutions. Therefore, the THAAD-ER would be an interim measure to counter the emerging threat until laser and railgun systems capable of performing missile defense come online, expected in the mid to late-2020s

    Pentagon should react promptly and finance this extended range THAAD since this is the only system that can provide us with some rudimentary anti hypersonic capability in a short period. THAAD is tried and proved and by just adding one more booster stage rocket motor the interceptor missile can reach incredible speeds capable of knocking out hyperosnic missiles. Base line THAAD travels at around Mach 8. With this additional booster I wouldn't be surprised that it could reach Mach 15-16.
    This would of course be a stop gap solution until DARPA's counter hypersonics program moves from the R&D program towards the real development by the MDA.

      Ravi kumar you do know that those numbers only signify range right? such as s300, s400 or the s500. don't get me wrong, range is good. But more importantly is the degree to which they can resist Electronic jamming and a host of other things. Secondly Russian Rader systems have often been bitten in places like Iraq and also in Syria when the Israeli bomb their nuclear plant like they did in Iraq as well. The Russian systems did do a lot of damage to the Americans in the Vietnam war. So in a nut Shell, this systems are not absolute. some are better than some and they can always use some improvement from time to time.

      Andre Acha they are really over reacting. Thaad can't intercept anything larger than a IRBM, it's just to slow. For a ABM system it's short range system made for local defence. It can defend South Korea but not anything flying by aimed at the continental US or Japan.

    • @armedanalysis5608
      @armedanalysis5608 Před 7 lety +4

      THAAD is only rated against IRBMs and MRBMs it can probably catch an ICBM in boost phases.(~150 seconds before it reaches Mach 20). However it has to be close to the ICBM,which is fine against North Korea.

    There might be a big problem: Can THAAD(ER) deal with an incoming missile or MIRV that can change its trajectory in flight? If not, then the enemy incoming just needs to change its direction one or more times and THAAD(ER) will miss it, thus allowing the enemy incoming to strike its target.

    Unfortunately, it is not enough, soon enough.... The US need more affordable multi-role ballistic missiles which may be used both offensively and/or defensively. While THAAD ER may offer some unique advantages, emerging area denial systems will be able to counter ballistic counter-measures in time.. yet a holistic approach must be taken to effectively overwhelm the aggressors ability to shoot down offensive strikes or effectively manage defensive capabilities. In today's world, the most credible event is a enemy with plenty, and the willingness to use and launch hundreds or thousands of rockets and/or missiles to overcome the American war machine. An affordable multirole ballistic missile capability may be able to answer for volume attack and more over serve as a force multiplier in the overall strategic battle plan.

    • @howardhuggins6744
      @howardhuggins6744 Před 7 lety +2

      LQc6VGMB2RHCexj4,
      I rather doubt it since the location of the intended interception missiles would place them outside of their respective countries boundaries plus the slant range and catch up/overtake speed to reach the THAAD missile would have to be made at TREMENDOUS speed. Something that I doubt is a technical possibility at this time.
      However, that doesn't preclude the use of a ground or air-based laser weapon designed to burn out the interceptor missile.
      But then you still run into territorial issues, i.e., is the laser model in somebody else's back yard or within their sphere of military influence or, if airborne, will it (the laser) have the power to fire a laser beam with enough power, accuracy and speed to defeat the intended target?
      But, long story short, I don't think your idea has much merit for the reasons (and more) I mentioned above. But then again I could be wrong. It's happened before. LOL

      If F-35 is bad, then which place should take the JSF place? That ugly big fat X-32?

      Lockheed's just the prime contractor. It's the subcontractors that make or break this. The ones that design/build these are not the same that make planes.

      Sure, the F-35 had its share of problems early on, but now, 180 of the air-craft has been produced, and currently priced at $95 m each, and should continued to further get cheaper in the future. ✈️
