    -- How To Release Worry And Anxiety From Your Body --
    Most of the time, when we worry, we’re sent to someone who helps us get our thoughts in order -- a therapist or counselor, for example. Worry is typically considered to be a mental disorder born of “wrong thinking” or a pessimistic outlook.
    But most people who try to “think positively” find that the worried thoughts and feelings just creep back in minutes or even seconds later.
    If you’re plagued with chronic fear and stress, you may wonder how to stop worrying. It’s true that living in a constant state of anxiety is not only unpleasant, but it also sabotages your happiness, relationships, physical health and can even impact your work.
    In this video, I talk about how we store worry and anxiety in our bodies and how anxiety causes not only muscle aches and pains but also life-threatening illnesses such as cardiovascular disease.
    I then give you a simple practice that anyone can start using today to release worry and anxiety from your body so that your muscles relax and you feel less stress on a day to day basis.

    Well, I must admit, I almost left this Video just when it got started when you began talking at the harm stress and anxiety can cause. (diseases and whatnot) Whilst I understand that this may be true - it’s not what an already anxious or worried person wants to hear; it’s always a bad way to start a Video that is meant to help people stop worrying - it just gives them more to be anxious about! :-) However, I stuck with it, and I found your advice very helpful, and so just a word of caution for many I have found that want to help people that usually begin by saying the harm your stressed state can do you, it’s like when someone is unable to sleep, and then someone explains how it is detrimental to their health. It’s not helpful (however true) and will scare many away unintentionally. Thanks for the great Video!

      I totally agree with you, people that are experiencing anxiety do not need to hear that. I fast forwarded that part, I didn’t need an extra issue to be anxious about.

      @nintendy Před 2 lety +3

      @@jesusprincess Agreed. I've watched many documentaries about people not being able to sleep for example, and they always list the damage it does to your health - this in itself is going to keep you awake at night by causing you even more anxiety about something you feel you can do nothing about! I mean; you are anxious already, and it’s as if these people are trying to 'frighten’ you into doing what is right, but we have no control over it, and cannot help it...

I'm always interested in learning ways to cope with natural human emotions without them being labeled as a disorder-of course I am not discounting disorders, I believe they are prevalent-but, from my perspective it feels isolating. Thankfully, my parents (who have lived through much trauma by immigrating from a communistic life in Romania) have always ingrained in me that we have the tools we need in ourselves to live happily within ourselves, and I'm glad I stumbled upon Sukie's channel. Mary, Reduce negative thoughts. Its quite simple with a litlle patience and determination. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down still for a few minutes and observe your breath. Feel the stillness within you. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Make it a habit. Do the above meditation daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

      @@shyaaammeneen63 Most somatic practitioners recommend you learn to listen to and befriend your emotions and pain, and observe where they sit in the body, rather than pasting a positive thought over them or trying to get rid of them. Meditation, however, often helps - particularly when you're aware of the science behind calming the nervous system. I love journaling, Chi Gong, and dancing for expressing, processing, then releasing challenging emotions.

    Hi Susie, I am having a lot of trouble orienting / focusing on anything other than myself and as you explain exactly in this video I believe it has become a habit now of wanting to protect myself because there’s so much stimulation out there. I have also had a bit of trauma through my life and all I want to do is protect myself because I feel so different to others sometimes. When I do focus out / orient, it’s such a natural habit and literally takes a split second without me consciously doing so to then go back to holding myself and focusing on my sensations / controlling my somatic experience and just doing work / socialising etc whilst doing this. I can’t stop focusing on the tightness in my stomach and my inability to relax it. It is driving me crazy as when I start to orient and change the behaviour, I get the anxiety symptoms start to arise. It seems very scary because fight or flight click in because looking out / orienting is now so foreign to me. A big barrier is that I am even scared to do this because I will likely look like an idiot when I’m trying to change this behaviour when I’m around friends and I don’t want that 😬 do you have any tips or does this seem like a normal problem people have when breaking a terrible habit? I’m so frustrated.

    • @SukieBaxter
      @SukieBaxter  Před 3 lety +38

      Hey Shelley, there's a lot here. Maybe try softening your approach. Small changes are more powerful than big shifts as your soma -- your embodied self -- can more easily integrate them. Anxiety with relaxation is common. Your biology has held on so tightly for so long that to let go feels vulnerable. Again, small shifts are more powerful here because they are less threatening. And finally, the time to practice this is not when you're out with groups. Build your capacity for awareness and attention when you are in a safe space, whether that's alone or with a trusted guide/mentor/teacher. The goal is actually not to change the behavior. The goal is to notice differently -- to expand your attention. Shifts in biology and behavior happen as a natural result. I hope that's helpful.

      @@catherinebonanno6545 If anxiety affects physical health visit a psychologist. You can heal yourself. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10 minutes or more. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Patience is needed. Whenever you are free in the day or night sit still for 2 minutes and observe your breath. Make it a habit. Do the above meditation daily to feel relaxed. Positive affirmations for 5-10 minutes before sleep also gives quick relief. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

    That was a very informative video. I agree with you about physical work. Though I like talk therapy, I find somatic work SO incredibly calming and healing. Activating the Vagus nerve by stroking my arms, around my ears, or hands can make me purr like a cat. Peter Levine's books too on trauma have wonderful somatic release techniques that help release old trauma WITHOUT triggering or re-traumatizing yourself. I've gone from a Fight or Flight flashback to calm in 5 minutes that way. You have many good tips in this and other videos, and I'm glad it helped with your own anxiety. Often the best teachers, doctors, and healers healed themselves first - then pass on the knowledge that helped them. Thank you for these, Sukie!

    Wow. You have explained me to a T. I had childhood trauma and I've grown up in a state of worry. When there isn't anything to worry about, I expect doom around the corner and worry about that. Pretty interiors are very important to me. I often glance around the room as you describe. After watching this video, I realized that I'd come up with my own healing mechanism without knowing what I was doing.

      Katie, Reduce negative thoughts. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Make it a habit. Do the above meditation daily to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

      @@n81mobile Take action without delay. If you are taking any medication from your physician try to take the lowest dose as it becomes habit forming. Do the simple practice I told you regularly. I have been doing the breath observing practice since the last 15 years and feeling relaxed. It is very simple but a strong desire to transform from within is needed. I have made it a habit observing my breath when walking alone, reading, watching tv etc. Life has become tough and everyone must develop their mental muscles. Read more about positive effects of breathing on the brain on google. Diet is also very important. Avoid spicey and oily food and give gaps between meals. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir-Counsellor.

    Wow this is crazy validating rn. I’ve been struggling with chronic pain for some time and recently started physical therapy. The therapist was telling me about things like this and how connected everything is and how after I was done with my sessions with her she’d love to recommend me for general abdominal and posture pt because I’d been so tense and guarding myself from pain and because of anxiety that my abdominal muscles are just so messed up from being tense for so long. It was like a smack in the face to hear about how mental effects physical but seems so obvious in hindsight!

Those emotions stay stucl under it and cause me more anxiety because it is so uncomfortable. Like the flow of the energy gets stunted. I am desperate for relief and change. Any tips would be helpful.
