Why does the Hawaii Kilauea volcano keep erupting?

  • Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could soon send boulders and ash shooting out of its summit crater in the kind of explosive eruption last displayed nearly a century ago. CBC science commentator Bob McDonald explains why Kilauea has been continually erupting for centuries and how it compares to other volcanoes.

      yes, except volcanos are...UNPREDICTABLE.

    • @WH6FQE
      @WH6FQE Před 6 lety +18

      For the most part yes, however, this particular volcano is a lot more predictable than most others because it is a different type of volcano than all others around the world. Hawaii's volcanoes are among a very few in the world which are not influenced by the collisions of tectonic plates. Our volcanoes sit directly in the center of the tectonic plate, not around the edge like most other volcanoes on the planet. Another thing that makes this particular volcano more predictable is that it is not sitting there building up pressure waiting to pop like a pimple. It has been continuously releasing pressure with continual eruptions every day for the past 35 years.

      Unlike what Bob said about Visuvius, Krakatoa, Mt. St. Helens, and most of the other volcanoes in the Ring of Fire, you can't get out the way of those when they go. They just go. That there has been the continued centralized activity means all you have to do is get out of her way and you'll be fine. Unlike what happened to Pompeii and Herculaneum and to a degree what happened to Thera.

    Good analysis Bob. It's amazing how much bad info gets out there to the media. I've been exploring Kilauea for 27 years. Its very visitor friendly 99% of the time. The current Leilani eruption is so infrequent its been 58 years since something like this has occurred. Here on the Big Island, we run to eruptions, not away from them. I wish they'd kept the park open and issued everyone metal garbage cans lids to protect themselves from the pea-sized rocks when it blows. No different than being in a hail storm :-) I've used them before to protect my gear where lava blobs were spattering.

      While anything is possible, there's no evidence of previous explosions sending ton sized boulders beyond the caldera itself. Most of the rocks get pulverized. I explored that entire area numerous times when it used to be open. Of course, I understand them being better safe than sorry. This is the largest one I've ever found still within the caldera's inner edge. lavapix.com/#/gallery/volcano-400-499/498sq-115140105/ Its smaller than a bowling ball.

    One possible answer of many is; The main vent, may have broke into a large mouth cave system that goes for possibly a few miles, with other arteries connected. Displacing ground water into steam as it travels. The steam pressure at times multiplying at times, as it makes it way back to the original mouth and back out main vent having no quicker access elsewhere, causing greater eruptions at times?

    Nice report. Just wanted to clarify, the video that shows the grey ash clouds and the deep circular lava pit are taken at the summit crater of Kilauea which is actually 20 miles west of where the fissure outbreaks near the coast are. The lava that is spewing out is from the underground lava system which would normally be pooling in the main crater's vent. In late April the lava began draining from that main vent and began moving underground toward where the current volcanic activity is occurring. Initially the scientists thought the lava would exit at the Pu'u O'o vent which is about halfway to the current activity. This vent was really active from 1990-2014 with many spectacular lava flows to the sea. The sensors actually indicated that Pu'u O'o was filling with lava , but in a short time it became clear that the lava was moving on, and it must have surprised people when the fissures opened up in early May in Leilani Estates. Many have questioned why a geothermal well and residential neighborhood would have been built in an active volcano zone. Actually, in that area, the last eruption was in 1960 in the town of Kapoho, which is the region that is the farthest eastern tip of the island. Exploratory drilling for the geothermal well was done in mid 1970 as an alternate energy source during the time of high oil prices and gas rationing (1975). The unpopular venture was monitored for nearly 20 years for feasibility and stability and must have been deemed safe as the power plant was built in 1993. Leilani Estates must have used the geothermal project as reassurance for building there and actually the last lava flows in that area were in 1955. I actually watched that from my grandma's house. Anyway the decision to build there has just been shown to be a costly unfortunate gamble. One last point. Bob's colleague was concerned about the large boulder explosions. That is actually a concern at the Main summit crater which I already pointed out is 20 miles away. The mechanics of those explosions are like this; as the lava drains from the main vent toward Leilani Estates the level of lava at the summit will fall below the artesian water table level. The walls of the main vent will be collapsing in on itself and act as a debris plug. Meanwhile the water flowing into the vent will build up steam pressure until it is released as an explosive ash cloud eruption and the process will continue until the lava level rises to cut off the water source, So there is water involved, but the volcanoes Bob mentioned Mt. Etna, Herculaneum, et al, have debris plugs that build up over many years and are more massive and densely packed and the pressures that build up are magnitudes more powerful and also contain explosive volcanic gasses so they are much more violent. Also the lava in Hawaii eruptions, we call pahoehoe (pah-hoy-hoy) is more fluid and release any gas or steam pressures easily as seen in the fountaining at Leilani Estates. So deceptively beautiful.

      @Brenelael Před 6 lety +3

      While what you are saying has some truth it's not the same. Those are all huge maybe's but this is a sure thing. The Volcanoes of Hawaii are very predictable. The eastern rift zone they build all of this inside of is called that because they've literally known for decades that is the path of the hot spot under the island. The only other areas on earth that has a similar situation would be river flood plains like the Mississippi. At least there they have the excuse of the extremely fertile land for farming however. This was just greedy land developers trying to sell a little slice of "paradise" for the greatest profit.

      Richard Crockett - What about California? They have subdivisions built right on top of fault lines and they know there is going to be the BIG one someday. Then you have people that build on beach front properties on the east coast and they KNOW they are going to get hit by a hurricane. So there is no true difference.

    Ok the thing this guy is saying is not entirely true. Volcanoes don't blow their tops b/c of water. It has everything to do with the composition of the molten material. In the past the volcanoes with sever violent intensity had a much higher composition in silica, making their material have the consistency of tooth paste, thus making them rather gunky and viscous. The Hawaiin volcanoes are indeed from a hot spot, however the magma composition of their volcanoes are ultra mafic to mafic. Meaning it has low silica and thus less viscous, its lava flows smoothly, that's also one reason why cooled lava flows look like rivers of rock. Yes it is dangerous. Also Krakatoa was not mafic. It was either an intermediate or phelsic volcano, which is why it was so violent. The Hawaiian volcanoes do not have that extreme in violent intensity. Also I'm studying geology so I may not be entirely true but him saying that it'll blow up like major volcanoes in the past is false.
    This is just a tid bit of info if you care to read.

    • @RoxnDox
      @RoxnDox Před 6 lety +2

      True - mafic vs siliceous magma composition has the greatest effect on a volcano's explosive nature. Krakatoa, in particular, though, is attributed to seawater seeping into the volcano and coming into direct contact with the underlying magma while it was still at depth and under full pressure. The combination of steam explosion and subsequent full-pressure eruption of gas-charged siliceous magma was what gave it such power.
